Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology offers the capability of building wide-area networks with high speed. Reconfigurability is a key feature of a WDM network that enables the network logical topology to change dynamically in response to the changing traffic patterns. There are two important issues involved in the reconfiguration of a network logical topology. One is how to determine the new logical topology corresponding to the current topology. It needs to consider a trade-off between the performance of the new target topology and the cost of the topology transition from the current topology to the new one. The other is how to determine the transition sequence from the current topology to the new one. It needs to control the disruption to the network as less as possible during the reconfiguration process. In this paper, we focus on the latter problem and propose several heuristic algorithms that reconfigure logical topologies in wide-area wavelength-routed optical networks. Our reconfiguration algorithms attempt to control the disruption to the network as less as possible during the reconfiguration process. For this purpose, a lightpath is taken as the minimum reconfiguration unit. The proposed algorithms are evaluated by using an NFSNET-like network model with 16 nodes and 25 links. The results show that very simple algorithms provide very small computational complexity but poor performance, i.e., large network disruption, and that an efficient algorithm provides reasonable computational complexity and very good performance. More complex algorithms may improve performance somewhat further but have unrealistically large computational complexity.

This paper presents a method for tuning the structure of a causal network (CN) to evaluate a learner's profile for a learning assistance system that employs hierarchically structured learning material. The method uses as an initial CN structure causally related inter-node paths that explicitly define the learning material structure. Then, based on this initial structure other inter-node paths (sideway paths) not present in the initial CN structure are inferred by referring to the learner's database generated through the use of a learning assistance system. An evaluation using simulation indicates that the method has an inference probability of about 63% and an inference accuracy of about 30%.

This letter proposes a low-complexity single frequency estimator for flat fading channels. The simplified estimator decreases the number of computations in the calculation of the autocorrelation function (AF) when compared to AF-based conventional estimators. The simplified estimator yields a comparable estimation performance to the existing estimators, while retaining the same frequency range.

This paper deals with a secret key agreement problem from correlated random numbers. It is proved that there is a pair of linear matrices that yields a secret key agreement in the situation wherein a sender, a legitimate receiver, and an eavesdropper have access to correlated random numbers. A relation between the coding problem of correlated sources and a secret key agreement problem from correlated random numbers are also discussed.

This paper presents a 3D feature-based binocular tracking algorithm for tracking crowded people indoors. The algorithm consists of a two stage 3D feature points grouping method and a robust 3D feature-based tracking method. The two stage 3D feature points grouping method can use kernel-based ISODATA method to detect people accurately even though the part or almost full occlusion occurs among people in surveillance area. The robust 3D feature-based Tracking method combines interacting multiple model (IMM) method with a cascade multiple feature data association method. The robust 3D feature-based tracking method not only manages the generation and disappearance of a trajectory, but also can deal with the interaction of people and track people maneuvering. Experimental results demonstrate the robustness and efficiency of the proposed framework. It is real-time and not sensitive to the variable frame to frame interval time. It also can deal with the occlusion of people and do well in those cases that people rotate and wriggle.

In this study, we propose an adaptive handoff scheme with dynamic hysteresis value for cellular communications, which is based on distance between the mobile station and the serving base station. Performance is evaluated in terms of the expected number of handoffs, the expected handoff delay, standard deviation of handoff location, and the expected link degradation probability as well. Numerical results and simulations show that the proposed scheme outperforms the handoff schemes with static hysteresis levels. The effect of distance error is also discussed.

We study the coupled spatio-temporal variations of the electron density and the electric field (electron plasma oscillations) in high-electron mobility transistors using the developed device model. The excitation of electron plasma oscillations in the terahertz range of frequencies might lead to the emission of terahertz radiation. In the framework of the model developed, we calculate the resonant plasma frequencies and find the conditions for the plasma oscillations self-excitation (plasma instability) We show that the transit-time effect in the high-electric field region near the drain edge of the channel of high-electron mobility transistors can cause the self-excitation of the plasma oscillations. It is shown that the self-excitation of plasma oscillations is possible when the ratio of the electron velocity in the high field region, ud, and the gate length, Lg, i.e., the inverse transit time are sufficiently large in comparison with the electron collision frequency in the gated channel, ν. The transit-time mechanism of plasma instability under consideration can superimpose on the Dyakonov-Shur mechanism predicted previously strongly affecting the conditions of the instability and, hence, terahertz emission. The instability mechanism under consideration might shed light on the origin of terahertz emission from high electron mobility transistors observed in recent experiments.

We performed numerical analyses on structure sensitive field emission properties of our proposing plasmon resonant photomixer (PRX) in the terahertz range. The photomixer incorporates doubly interdigitated grating strips for gate electrodes and a vertical resonator structure for realizing highly efficient terahertz emission even at room temperature. We investigated the dependence of total field emission properties of PRX's on their material and dimension parameters. Introduction of low-conductive gate electrodes and ac-coupled 2D periodic plasmon gratings with depleted connecting portions are effective for expanding its lower cutoff frequency. The cutoff frequency, which is around 1.0 THz in standard metal-gates configuration, is expanded to less than 500 GHz. The output intensity could also be amplified more than double. On the other hand, a shorter vertical cavity is effective for expanding its upper cutoff frequency, which is expanded close to vertical resonant frequency, while maintaining the lower cutoff frequency. The combination of these design rules can realize much broader bandwidth operation.

An effective human-robot interaction is essential for wide penetration of service robots into the market. Such robot needs a vision system to recognize objects. It is, however, difficult to realize vision systems that can work in various conditions. More robust techniques of object recognition and image segmentation are essential. Thus, we have proposed to use the human user's assistance for objects recognition through speech. This paper presents a system that recognizes objects in occlusion and/or multicolor cases using geometric and photometric analysis of images. Based on the analysis results, the system makes a hypothesis of the scene. Then, it asks the user for confirmation by describing the hypothesis. If the hypothesis is not correct, the system generates another hypothesis until it correctly understands the scene. Through experiments on a real mobile robot, we have confirmed the usefulness of the system.

In AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs), Si3N4 passivation film brings effective improvements in the current collapse phenomenon, however, the suppression of this phenomenon in a high voltage operation can not be achieved in only the Si3N4 deposition process. In order to solve this problem, we have demonstrated an NH3-plasma surface pretreatment in the chamber of plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PE-CVD) just before Si3N4 deposition process. We found that the optimized NH3-plasma pretreatment could improve the current collapse as compared with only the Si3N4 deposition and an excessive pretreatment made it worse adversely in AlGaN/GaN-HEMTs. It was confirmed by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) analysis that the optimized NH3-plasma pretreatment decreased the carbon contamination such as hydrocarbon on the AlGaN surface and the excessive pretreatment degraded the stoicheiometric composition of AlGaN surface.

Natural, continuous tone images have a very important property of high correlation of adjacent pixels. Images which we wish to compress are usually non-stationary and can be reasonably modeled as smooth and textured areas separated by edges. This property has been successfully exploited in LOCO-I and CALIC by applying gradient based predictive coding as a major de-correlation tool. However, they only examine the horizontal and vertical gradients, and assume the local edge can only occur in these two directions. Their over-simplified assumptions hurt the robustness of the prediction in higher complex areas. In this paper, we propose an accurate gradient selective prediction (AGSP) algorithm which is designed to perform robustly around any type of image texture. Our method measures local texture information by comparison and selection of normalized scalar representation of the gradients in four directions. An adaptive predictor is formed based on the local gradient information and immediate causal pixels. Local texture properties are also exploited in the context modeling of the prediction error. The results we obtained on a test set of several standard images are encouraging. On the average, our method achieves a compression ratio significantly better than CALIC without noticeably increasing of computational complexity.

This paper describes a method for the classification of bank-notes. The algorithm has three stages, and classifies bank-notes with very low error rates and at high speeds. To achieve the very low error rates, the result of classification is checked in the final stage by using different features to those used in the first two. High-speed processing is mainly achieved by the hierarchical structure, which leads to low computational costs. In evaluation on 32,850 samples of US bank-notes, with the same number used for training, the algorithm classified all samples precisely with no error sample. We estimate that the worst error rate is 3.1E-9 for the classification statistically.

A novel resonant tunneling diode (RTD) oscillator is proposed, which overcomes the problems of the conventional RTD oscillators, such as the low-frequency spurious oscillation and the bias instability. Our proposal consists of two RTDs connected serially, and the resonator connected to the node between two RTDs. This circuit separates the oscillation node from the bias nodes, and suppresses the above mentioned problems. This relaxes the severe restriction on the RTD area, and makes it possible to supply higher power to a load. Circuit simulation shows that with this circuit more than 2 mW power can be supplied to the 50 Ω resistive load at 100 GHz using RTDs having 105 A/cm2-peak current density and 20 µm2-area. It also shows that the dc-to-RF conversion efficiency is as good as that of conventional ones. Furthermore, we have studied the extension of this oscillator having 4 RTDs connected serially. Circuit simulations revealed that using this circuit the power can be doubled with a good conversion efficiency.

One of the key technologies to realize future broadband mobile communications is orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission. However, the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in OFDM transmission is so much larger than that in single carrier transmission that its adoption in mobile communication systems is uncertain. This paper evaluates the transmission performance possible with iterative peak reduction to design more efficient OFDM transmitters. The PAPR reduction effect and bit error rate (BER) performance are clarified by computer simulations. We calculate the set PAPR value that achieves a target PAPR in the iterative peak reduction method. The required Eb/N0 performance is evaluated under the calculated PAPR condition. The results are effective in designing the back-off value of a transmission power amplifier given fixed transmission quality and computational complexity.

We achieved first dynamic all-optical signal processing with a bandgap-engineered MZI SOA all-optical switch. The wide-gap Selective Area Growth (SAG) technique was used to provide multi-bandgap materials with a single step epitaxy. The maximum photoluminescence (PL) peak shift obtained between the active region and the passive region was 192 nm. The static current switching with the fabricated switch indicated a large carrier induced refractive index change; up to 14 π phase shift was obtained with 60 mA injection in the SOA. The carrier recovery time of the SOA for obtaining a phase shift of π was estimated to be 250-300 ps. A clear eye pattern was obtained in 2.5 Gbps all-optical wavelength conversion. This is the first all-optical wavelength conversion demonstration with a bandgap-engineered PIC with either selective area growth or quantum-well intermixing techniques.

A new method for automatically building statistical shape models from a set of training examples and in particular from a class of hands. In this study, we utilise a novel approach to automatically recover the shape of hand outlines from a series of 2D training images. Automated landmark extraction is accomplished through the use of the self-organising model the growing neural gas (GNG) network, which is able to learn and preserve the topological relations of a given set of input patterns without requiring a priori knowledge of the structure of the input space. The GNG is compared to other self-organising networks such as Kohonen and Neural Gas (NG) maps and results are given for the training set of hand outlines, showing that the proposed method preserves accurate models.

We present room temperature current voltage characteristics from SiGe interband tunneling diodes epitaxially grown on highly resistive Si(001) substrates. In this case, a maximum peak to valley current ratio (PVCR) of 5.65 was obtained. The possible integration of a SiGe tunnel diode with a strained Si transistor lead us to investigate the growth of SiGe interband tunneling diodes on Si0.7Ge0.3 virtual substrates. A careful optimization of the layer structure leads to a maximum PVCR of 1.36 at room temperature. The latter value can be further increased to 2.26 at 3.7 K. Our results demonstrate that high quality SiGe interband tunneling diodes can be realized, which is of great interest for future memory and high speed applications.

We propose a novel strategy to obtain a high spatio-temporal resolution video. To this end, we introduce a dual sensor camera that can capture two video sequences with the same field of view simultaneously. These sequences record high resolution with low frame rate and low resolution with high frame rate. This paper presents an algorithm to synthesize a high spatio-temporal resolution video from these two video sequences by using motion compensation and spectral fusion. We confirm that the proposed method improves the resolution and frame rate of the synthesized video.

Experimental investigations on detection of terahertz radiation are presented. We used plasma wave instability phenomenon in nanometer Silicon field effect transistor. A 30 nm gate length transistor was illuminated by THz radiation at room temperature. We observe a maximum signal near to the threshold voltage. This result clearly demonstrates the possibility of plasma wave THz operation of these nanometer scale devices. The response was attributed to a non resonant detection. We also demonstrate the possibility to observe a resonant detection on the same devices.
