  • A Reduced-Sample-Rate Sigma-Delta-Pipeline ADC Architecture for High-Speed High-Resolution Applications

    A reduced-sample-rate (RSR) sigma-delta-pipeline (SDP) analog-to-digital converter architecture suitable for high-resolution and high-speed applications with low oversampling ratios (OSR) is presented. The proposed architecture employs a class of high-order noise transfer function (NTF) with a novel pole-zero locations. A design methodology is developed to reach the optimum NTF. The optimum NTF determines the location of the non-zero poles improving the stability of the loop and implementing the reduced-sample-rate structure, simultaneously. Unity gain signal transfer function to mitigate the analog circuit imperfections, simplified analog implementation with reduced number of operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs), and novel, aggressive yet stable NTF with high out of band gain to achieve larger peak signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are the main features of the proposed NTF and ADC architecture. To verify the usefulness of the proposed architecture, NTF, and design methodology, two different cases are investigated. Simulation results show that with a 4th-order modulator, designed making use of the proposed approach, the maximum SNDR of 115 dB and 124.1 dB can be achieved with only OSR of 8, and 16 respectively.

  • Error Analysis for Ultra-Wideband DS- and Hybrid DS/TH-CDMA with Arbitrary Chip-Duty

    In this paper, ultra-wideband (UWB) multiple access systems are introduced by using direct-sequence (DS) and hybrid direct-sequence time-hopping (DS/TH) code division multiple access (CDMA) that use arbitrary chip-duty of the spreading sequences. The bit error probabilities are presented. First of all, the variances of the multiple access interference are developed by investigating the collision properties of the signals. Afterward, various approximations are applied. The standard Gaussian approximation (SGA) for the DS system is shown to become extremely optimistic as the chip-duty becomes low. Though the hybrid system performs better, the SGA still remains optimistic. To obtain accurate results, Holtzman's simplified improved Gaussian approximation (SIGA) and Morrow and Lehnert's improved Gaussian approximation (IGA) are used. A shortcoming of the SIGA is rediscovered that renders it unusable for low-duty DS systems, especially, at high signal-to-noise ratio. However, for the hybrid system, the SIGA works as an excellent tool. The IGA is used to get accurate results for the low-duty DS systems. It is shown that lowering of chip-duty by keeping chip rate and chip length unchanged improves performance for asynchronous DS and both asynchronous and synchronous hybrid systems. However, under the same processing gain, a high-duty system performs better than a low-duty system. Performance of synchronous DS system remains independent of chip-duty.

  • A Practical Method of Numerical Calculation of the Mapping Degree

    This paper proposes a simple and efficient method to numerically obtain the mapping degree deg(f, 0, B) of a C1 map f : Rn → Rn at a regular value 0 relative to a bounded open subset B ⊂ Rn. For practical application, this method adopts Aberth's algorithm which does not require computation of derivatives and determinants, and reduces the computational cost with two additional procedures, namely preconditioning using the coordinate transformation and pruning using Krawczyk's method. Numerical examples show that the proposed method gives the mapping degree with 2n+1 operations using interval arithmetic.

  • Collusion-Attack Free ID-Based Non-interactive Key Sharing

    A new simply implemented collusion-attack free identity-based non-interactive key sharing scheme (ID-NIKS) has been proposed. A common-key can be shared by executing only once a modular exponentiation which is equivalent to RSA deciphering, and the security depends on the difficulty of factoring and the discrete logarithm problem. Each user's secret information can be generated by solving two simple discrete logarithm problems and synthsizing their solutions by linear combination. The detail comparison with the Maurer-Yacobi's scheme including its modified versions shows that the computational complexity to generate each user's secret information is much smaller and the freedom to select system parameters is much greater than that of the Maurer-Yacobi's scheme. Then our proposed scheme can be implemented very easily and hence it is suitable for practical use.

    In this letter, we provide a performance evaluation of a Multi-Band Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MB-OFDM) with adaptive modulation in a multipath fading channel. The MB-OFDM system in conjunction with adaptive modulation technique can be considered as one of the solutions for severely degraded channels such as those common in frequency selective fading environments.

    In this paper, a chromatic adaptation model (CAM) based on the dependence on LMS cone responses of the human visual system (HVS) is proposed for TV and PC monitors under a variety of viewing conditions. We derived the proposed CAM based on Breneman's corresponding color data. The results of the experiments were carried out to assess the proposed model performance in terms of color fidelity by comparing complex images on a LCD monitor. We confirmed that the proposed model performed better to predict corresponding colors under various viewing conditions. Therefore, the reproduced colors, which are viewed in real surround viewing conditions, are perceived the same as original object colors, when the proposed CAM was applied to color display devices such as CRT, LCD, and PDP.

    According to the Gestalt principals, this paper presents a recognition method of grouping areas in trademark images modeling features for measuring the attraction degree between couples of image components. This investigation would be used for content-based image retrieval from the view of mirroring human perception for images. Depending on variability in human perception for trademark images, the proposed method finds grouping areas by calculating Mahalanobis distance with the features to every combination of two components in images. The features are extracted from every combination of two components in images, and the features represent proximity, shape similarity, and closure between two components. In addition, changing combination of the features, plural grouping patterns are output. Besides, this paper shows the efficiency and limits of the proposed method from experimental results. In the experiments, 104 participants have perceived grouping patterns to 74 trademark images and the human perceptions have been compared with outputs by the proposed method for the 74 images.

    Adaptive transmission methods improve the performance of wireless communication system by adjusting parameters like modulation, code-rate, and power depending on the channel state adaptively. In this letter, we consider the adaptive code-rate OFDM system in which code-rate of each subcarrier is adapted optimally. RCPC code is used to obtain different code-rate for each subcarrier. Performance analysis shows that 3-6 dB SNR gain or up to 30-50% data rate increase is achieved at bit error rate 10-6.

    In this paper, we propose an interactive instruction system named IMPRESSION, which allows performance of interactive presentations using multimedia educational materials in class. In recent years, although many practices of educational methodology with information technology and presentation tools using multimedia resources as educational materials have come into common use, instructors can only present such materials in a slide-sheet form through the use of such presentation tools in class. Therefore, instructors can neither do formative evaluations nor can they present suitable materials according to students' reactions in class. Our proposed methodology employs a scenario-based approach in a double loop instructional design process to overcome such problems. Instructors design an instructional plan as a scenario, and subsequently implement and modify the plan through formative evaluation during the class. They then conduct a summative evaluation based on planned and implemented instructions for redesign. To realize our methodology, in this paper we propose and design an instruction system that provides functions to select and present multimedia materials interactively provided on the Internet during the class; we then record these instructions. After implementing it, we confirmed that we can conduct the class flexibly based on our methodology through its practical use in an actual classroom environment.

  • Multilingual Closed Caption Translation System for Digital Television

    In this paper, we present a Korean to Chinese/English/Japanese multilingual Machine Translation (MT) system of closed captions for Digital Television (DTV). Preliminary experiments of our closed caption translation with existing base MT systems had shown unsatisfactory result. In order to achieve more accurate translation with the base MT systems, we adopted live resources of multilingual Named Entities and their translingual equivalences from the Web. We also utilize the program information, which the terrestrial broadcasters offer through DTV transport stream, in order to use program specific dictionaries, including the names of characters, locations and organizations. Two more components are adopted for reducing the ambiguities of parsing and word sense disambiguation; sentence simplification for long sentence segmentation and dynamic domain identification for automatic domain dictionary stacking. With these integrated approaches, we could raise the Mean Opinion Score (MOS) of translation accuracy by 0.40 higher than the base MT systems.

  • A Bootstrapped Switch for nMOS Reversible Energy Recovery Logic for Low-Voltage Applications

    In this paper, we describe a bootstrapped nMOS switch that is modified to reduce leakage current for nMOS reversible energy recovery logic (nRERL) [1]. Conventional bootstrapped switches are not suitable for nRERL because they have nonadiabatic loss due to leakage current that flows while boosted. Therefore, we lowered the gate voltage of the isolation transistor in each bootstrapped switch to reduce this leakage current. With detailed analysis and simulation, we determined the range of the bias voltage, in which the switches can transfer full-swing input signals. We implemented a simple 8-bit nRERL microprocessor into silicon and measured its energy consumption to confirm our analysis. For the supply voltage of 1.8 V and the operating frequency of 880 kHz, we found that the microprocessor consumed about 8.5 pJ/cycle for 1.3 V < Vbias <1.6 V, which was just about a half of its energy consumption when Vbias = 1.7 V.

    Let H be a graph with a designated vertex s, where edges are weighted by nonnegative reals. Splitting edges e={u,s} and e'={s,v} at s is an operation that reduces the weight of each of e and e' by a real δ>0 while increasing the weight of edge {u,v} by δ. It is known that all edges incident to s can be split off while preserving the edge-connectivity of H and that such a complete splitting is used to solve many connectivity problems. In this paper, we give an O(mn+n2log n) time algorithm for finding a complete splitting in a graph with n vertices and m edges.

  • Implementation of the Perfect Matched Layer to the CIP Method

    The perfect matched layer (PML) is formulated for the use in the constrained interpolation profile (CIP) method. Numerical results are presented to examine the performance of the proposed formulation of the PML in the case of two-dimensional TM wave. The results show that the proposed methods suppress the reflection effectively in comparison with the natural absorbing boundary condition of the CIP method. We have two methods to formulate the PML, and it is shown that the both methods have equal characteristics.

    To perform a comparative study, we experimented on two differential epitaxial structures, the conventional metamorphic high-electron-mobility-transistor (MHEMT) using the InAlAs/InGaAs/InAlAs structure and the InP-composite-channel MHEMT adopting the InAlAs/InGaAs/InP structure. Compared with the conventional MHEMT, the InP-composite-channel MHEMT shows improved breakdown performance; more than approximately 3.8 V. This increased breakdown voltage can be explained by the lower impact ionization coefficient of the InP-composite-channel MHEMT than that of the conventional MHEMT. The InP-composite-channel MHEMT also shows improved Radio Frequency characteristics of S21 gain of approximately 4.35 dB at 50 GHz, and a cutoff frequency (fT) and a maximum frequency of oscillation (fmax) of approximately 124 GHz and 240 GHz, respectively, were obtained. These are due to decreases in go and gm.

    This paper deals with the diffraction of TM plane wave by a perfectly conductive periodic surface. Applying the Rayleigh hypothesis, a linear equation system determining the diffraction amplitudes is derived. The linear equation is formally solved by Cramer's formula. It is then found that, when the angle of incidence becomes a low grazing limit, the amplitude of the specular reflection becomes -1 and any other diffraction amplitudes vanish for any perfectly conductive periodic surfaces with small roughness and gentle slope.

    HfOxNy thin films formed by the electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) Ar/N2 plasma nitridation of HfO2 films were investigated for high-k gate insulator applications. HfOxNy thin films formed by the ECR Ar/N2 plasma nitridation (60 s) of 1.5-nm-thick HfO2 films, which were deposited on chemically oxidized Si(100) substrates, were found to be effective for suppressing interfacial layer growth or crystallization during postdeposition annealing (PDA) in N2 ambient. After 900 PDA of for 5 min in N2 ambient, it was found that HfSiON film with a relatively high dielectric constant was formed on the HfOxNy/Si interface by Si diffusion. An equivalent oxide thickness (EOT) of 2.0 nm and a leakage current density of 1.010-3 A/cm2 (at VFB-1 V) were obtained. The effective mobility of the fabricated p-channel metal-insulator-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MISFET) with the HfOxNy gate insulator was 50 cm2/Vs, and the gate leakage current of the MISFET with the HfOxNy gate insulator was found to be well suppressed compared with the MISFET with the HfO2 gate insulator after 900 PDA because of the nitridation of HfO2.

  • Competitive Analysis of Multi-Queue Preemptive QoS Algorithms for General Priorities

    The recent burst growth of the Internet use overloads networking systems and degrades the quality of communications, e.g., bandwidth loss, packet drops, delay of responses, etc. To overcome such degradation of communication quality, the notion of Quality of Service (QoS) has received attention in practice. In general, QoS switches have several queues and each queue has several slots to store arriving packets. Since network traffic changes frequently, QoS switches need to control arriving packets to maximize the total priorities of transmitted packets, where the priorities are given by nonnegative values and correspond to the quality of service required to each packet. In this paper, we first derive the upper bounds for the competitive ratio of multi-queue preemptive QoS problem with priority between 1/α and 1, i.e., for any α ≥ 1, the algorithm TLH is (3-1/α)-competitive. This is a generalization of known results--for the case that packets have only priority 1 (α =1), the algorithm GREEDY (or TLH) is 2-competitive; for the case that packets have priorities between 0 and 1 (α = ∞), the algorithm TLH is 3-competitive. Then we consider the lower bounds for the competitive ratio of multi-queue preemptive QoS problem with priority between 0 and 1, and show that the competitive ratio of any multi-queue preemptive QoS algorithm is at least 1.514.

    In this letter, we present timing synchronization method using two consecutive orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols which are designed to be cyclic-shifted against each other. Our approach can be viewed as an expansion of Minn's correlation methods. Using the proposed OFDM signal, however, we can estimate the timing offset without any training symbol.

  • MEG Analysis with Spatial Filtered Reconstruction

    Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a method to measure a magnetic field generated by electrical neural activity in a brain, and it plays increasingly important role in clinical diagnoses and neurophysiological studies. However, in MEG analysis, the estimation of the brain activity, of the electric current density distribution in a brain which is represented by current dipoles, is problematic. A spatial filter and subsequent reconstruction of the current density distribution estimated by the spatial filter (spatial filtered reconstruction: SFR) are proposed. The spatial filter is designed to be used without prior or temporal information. The proposed spatial filter ensures that it concentrates the current distribution around the activated sources in the conductor. The current distribution estimated by the spatial filter is reconstructed by multiple linear regression. Redundant current dipoles are eliminated, and the current distribution is optimized in the sense of the Mallows Cp statistic. Numerical studies are demonstrated and show successful estimation by SFR in multiple-dipole cases. In single-dipole cases with SNRs of 101 and more, the location of the true dipole was successfully estimated for about 80% of the simulations. The reconstruction with multiple linear regression corrected the location of the maximum current density estimated by the proposed spatial filtering. The dipole on the correct position contributes to more than 70% of the total dipoles in the estimated current distribution in those cases. These results show that the current distribution is effectively localized by SFR. We also investigate the differences among SFR, the LCMV (linearly constrained minimum variance) beamformer and the SAM (synthetic aperture magnetometry), the representatives of spatial filters in MEG analyses. It is indicated that spatial resolution is improved by avoiding dependence on temporal information.

  • Performance Analysis of Combined Vehicular Communication

    The performance of the vehicular communication links used for Intelligent Transport Systems is investigated. Intervehicle communication (IVC) and combined vehicular communication implemented by IVC and additional communication media are studied and their performance is explicitly described. Through numerical studies, it is shown that performance varies according to parameter values such as the mean space headway, the speed of the vehicles, and the penetration ratio of the IVC device. To achieve a given level of performance, I propose (i) a design of the information delivery delay of additional communication media and (ii) a method determining the appropriate delay.
