  • Novel Array Antenna Assisted Adaptive Modulation Scheme for Fast Fading Channel

    In this paper, we propose a novel array antenna-assisted adaptive modulation scheme for fast fading environments. Although adaptive modulation is an efficient technique capable of establishing high bit-rate digital transmission in a multi-path fading environment, it is sensitive to the fast time variation of the channel because of difficulties in tracking the channel state. To resolve this problem, an array antenna-based Doppler spread compensator was applied to the adaptive modulation scheme. Computer simulation results indicated that the proposed scheme can markedly improve the bit error rate and throughput performance for the region in which the maximum Doppler frequency normalized by the packet length is up to 0.1.

    Recently, Lin, Hwang, and Li proposed an efficient remote authentication scheme using smart cards for multi-server architecture based on the geometric property of the Euclidean plane. Herein, we show that their scheme is vulnerable to two forgery attacks and a password-guessing attack, and is not easily repairable. Furthermore, their scheme lacks a proper user eviction mechanism.

    The optimal design of complex infinite impulse response (IIR) two-channel quadrature mirror filter (QMF) banks with equiripple frequency response is considered. The design problem is appropriately formulated to result in a simple optimization problem. Therefore, based on a variant of Karmarkar's algorithm, we can efficiently solve the optimization problem through a frequency sampling and iterative approximation method to find the complex coefficients for the IIR QMFs. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is to form an appropriate Chebyshev approximation of a desired response and then find its solution from a linear subspace in several iterations. Finally, simulation results are presented for illustration and comparison.

  • Correspondence of Common- and Differential-Mode Components on EM Radiation from Surface Microstrip Line Structure

    It has been demonstrated that a common-mode (CM) current can dominate the EMI processes up to 1 GHz, despite the fact that a CM current is smaller than a differential-mode (DM) current. However, this description is insufficient to describe behavior above 1 GHz. In this paper, the correspondence of CM and DM components for total electromagnetic (EM) radiation from a printed circuit board (PCB) with surface microstrip line, which is commonly used in microwave integrated circuits, at gigahertz frequency is studied experimentally and with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling. In order to characterize the EM radiation, the frequency response of the CM current, the electric field near the PCB, and the electric far field are investigated. First, the frequency response of the CM current, near and far-fields for the PCB with an attached feed cable are compared up to 5 GHz. Although the CM current decreases above a few gigahertz, near and far electric fields increase as the frequency becomes higher. Second, in order to distinguish between CM and DM radiation at high frequency, the frequency response and the angle pattern of the far-field from a PCB without the feed cable are discussed. The results show that radiation up to 1 GHz is related to the CM component. However, depending on polarization and PCB geometry, radiation may be dominated by the DM rather than the CM component. The results indicate that the DM component may be more significant relative to the CM component, and the increase in EM radiation can not be predicted from only the frequency response of CM current. Therefore, identifying the dominant component is essential for suppressing the EM radiation. This study is a basic consideration to realize a technique which is effective on the suppression of the EM radiation from the PCB with an attached feed cable.

    The measured values of electromagnetic disturbances should strongly correlate with degradation in the communication quality of digital wireless communication systems. The Amplitude Probability Distribution (APD) of a disturbance represents statistical information as applicable measurement readings that meet the above requirement. In this paper, correlations between APD measurements of disturbances and the bit error rate (BER) as a quality degradation index for victim systems are quantitatively investigated. Disturbance regulation by APD measurements is discussed from the viewpoint of protecting systems from disturbances. This investigation specifically considers the situation in which a repetition pulse disturbance impacts PHS and W-CDMA systems assumed as victims. The results confirm high correlations between the APD and BER not only experimentally but also theoretically under some conditions. A disturbance regulation criterion based on APD measurements is thus proposed for compliance testing of electronic appliances with the potential to act as disturbance noise sources.

    In this paper, we briefly describe a fast Jacket transform based on simple matrices factorization. The proposed algorithm needs fewer and simpler computations than that of the existing methods, which are RJ's [2], Lee's [7] and Yang's algorithm [8]. Therefore, it can be easily applied to develop the efficient fast algorithm for signal processing and data communications.

  • An Experimental Equation for Dependence of Duration of Breaking Arcs on Supply Voltage with Constant Circuit Resistance

    Arc duration of breaking arcs is investigated in order to obtain an experimental equation for the dependence of the arc duration on supply voltage in DC resistive circuit in air at atmospheric pressure. Materials of the contact pairs are Au, Ag, Cu, Ni, Pt and Pd. The interrupted current is ranging from 6 A to 10 A and the supply voltage is 30 V, 42 V and 54 V. Sato's experimental equation for the arc length is modified to obtain more appropriate experimental equation for our experimental results. The arc termination current It and minimum arc voltage Vm that are obtained with the experimental results are used as parameters of the experimental equation for each contact material. And characteristic coefficients C for each contact material in the experimental equation are obtained. As results, the experimental equation for each contact material well agrees with the experimental results. The experimental equation for several contact materials is presented.

    The performance of integrated segmentation and recognition of handwritten numeral strings relies on the classification accuracy and the non-character resistance of the underlying character classifier, which is variable depending on the techniques of pattern normalization, feature extraction, and classifier structure. In this paper, we evaluate the effects of 12 normalization functions and four selected feature types on numeral string recognition. Slant correction (deslant) is combined with the normalization functions and features so as to create 96 feature vectors, which are classified using two classifier structures. In experiments on numeral string images of the NIST Special Database 19, the classifiers have yielded very high string recognition accuracies. We show the superiority of moment normalization with adaptive aspect ratio mapping and the gradient direction feature, and observed that slant correction is beneficial to string recognition when combined with good normalization methods.

    The application of neural networks to the state-feedback guaranteed cost control problem of discrete-time system that has uncertainty in both state and input matrices is investigated. Based on the Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) design, a class of a state feedback controller is newly established, and sufficient conditions for the existence of guaranteed cost controller are derived. The novel contribution is that the neurocontroller is substituted for the additive gain perturbations. It is newly shown that although the neurocontroller is included in the discrete-time uncertain system, the robust stability for the closed-loop system and the reduction of the cost are attained.

    We propose and demonstrate a new stacked packaging structure using silica-based planar lightwave circuits (PLCs) with integrated micro-mirrors. This structure enables us to integrate active devices on PLCs with certain flexibility as regards optical coupling design and device selection. To achieve this, we developed an integrated micro-mirror with an accurate reflection angle and shielding structures to prevent crosstalk, and successfully demonstrated an 8-channel photodiode array module with excellent characteristics consisting of a high responsivity of > 0.85 A/W and a low crosstalk of < -65 dB.

  • TDR Analysis of Electromagnetic Radiation from a Bend of Micro-Strip Line

    Discontinuity such as a bend in a micro-strip line is known as one of major radiation sources. The total radiation from the micro-strip line is, however, being generally investigated because of the difficulties in identifying the radiation from some specific location. In this paper, paying attention to the feature of TDR (Time-Domain Reflectometry) measurement, we made an attempt to extract the radiation only from the bend in a micro-strip line. Such an approach is useful in understanding its radiation mechanism. As a result, we found that the larger the bend angle is, the larger the radiation power becomes. The radiation power achieved 3.5% at maximum when the bending angle was 90at the frequencies below 1 GHz. We also examined the validity of the TDR analysis in comparison with network analyzer measurement. We obtained the radiation power versus frequency from the measured scattering parameters, which exhibited a fair agreement with the TDR result.

    This paper presents a survey of elastic matching (EM) techniques employed in handwritten character recognition. EM is often called deformable template, flexible matching, or nonlinear template matching, and defined as the optimization problem of two-dimensional warping (2DW) which specifies the pixel-to-pixel correspondence between two subjected character image patterns. The pattern distance evaluated under optimized 2DW is invariant to a certain range of geometric deformations. Thus, by using the EM distance as a discriminant function, recognition systems robust to the deformations of handwritten characters can be realized. In this paper, EM techniques are classified according to the type of 2DW and the properties of each class are outlined. Several topics around EM, such as the category-dependent deformation tendency of handwritten characters, are also discussed.

    This paper proposes near-field sound-source localization based on crosscorrelation of a signed binary code. The signed binary code eliminates multibit signal processing for simpler implementation. Explicit formulae with near-field assumption are derived for a two microphone scenario and extended to a three microphone case with front-rear discrimination. Adaptive threshold for enabling and disabling source localization is developed for robustness in noisy environment. The proposed sound-source localization algorithm is implemented on a fixed-point DSP. Evaluation results in a robot scenario demonstrate that near-field assumption and front-rear discrimination provides almost 40% improvement in DOA estimation. A correct detection rate of 85% is obtained by a robot in a home environment.

  • An Interdomain Path Computation Server for GMPLS Networks

    The demand for intra- and interdomain routing for multilayered networks such as those using generalized multiprotocol label switching (GMPLS) is strong. One of the features that is peculiar to GMPLS networks is that because several different domains, such as those of IP, ATM, and optical fiber, are combined with each other hierarchically, various routing policies, which are sometimes independent from underlying domains and sometimes taking the underlying domains' policies into consideration, are required. For example GMPLS's lower layer LSPs like lambda LSP are expected to be established independently before the upper-layer LSPs, like IP and MPLS LSPs, are established in the underlying domains. Another requirement for the GMPLS interdomain routing is lightening the burden for selecting the interdomain route, because there are a lot of demands to interconnect many GMPLS domains. In order to satisfy these demands, we propose a path computation server (PCS) that is special for the intra/interdomain routing of GMPLS networks. As a counterpart of the proposed interdomain routing, it is now becoming popular to apply OSPF to the GMPLS interdomain routing. Therefore, we compared the proposed interdomain routing with OSPF, and show the applicability of the routing to GMPLS networks.

  • Applying Spiking Neural Nets to Noise Shaping

    In recent years, there has been an increased focus on the mechanics of information transmission in spiking neural networks. Especially the Noise Shaping properties of these networks and their similarity to Delta-Sigma Modulators has received a lot of attention. However, very little of the research done in this area has focused on the effect the weights in these networks have on the Noise Shaping properties and on post-processing of the network output signal. This paper concerns itself with the various modes of network operation and beneficial as well as detrimental effects which the systematic generation of network weights can effect. Also, a method for post-processing of the spiking output signal is introduced, bringing the output signal more in line with conventional Delta-Sigma Modulators. Relevancy of this research to industrial application of neural nets as building blocks of oversampled A/D converters is shown. Also, further points of contention are listed, which must be thoroughly researched to add to the above mentioned applicability of spiking neural nets.

    Traditional network-level Quality of Service (QoS) techniques are efficient from a network perspective, but they have not provided end-to-end QoS that is satisfactory to users. In this letter, a Coordinated Packet Discard scheme for the distribution of end-to-end QoS requirements into local loss constraints, as well as provision of local loss assurance is proposed. Experiments demonstrate its advantages on increasing QoS-satisfied user ratio and improving network efficiency.

  • Technical Trends in High-Speed Power Line Communication

    High-speed power line communication (PLC) can transmit an information signal of several hundred megabits per second over the power lines that transport electrical energy. Because this system employs unmodified existing transmission lines and the signal can be accessed through the simple interface of an ordinary electrical outlet, it promises to serve as the most effective transmission system for supporting information home appliances. For high-speed PLC to become practical requires that the frequencies used be expanded to 30 MHz, a frequency band is already used by many wireless communication systems. Thus, shared use with those systems is the most important problem. This paper introduces technical trends related to that issue.

    In this letter, we analyze a solution for multiple access technique based on OFDM-CDMA with pilot tone. The proposed system is designed to provide higher data rates in multimedia wireless communications. Primarily, it is achieved by introducing a serial to parallel converter with a pilot tone implemented in each of its output branches. The bit error rates (BER) performance of the proposed scheme are evaluated using computer simulations. The results show that the presented OFDM-CDMA system provides high data rates and low BER and, for the same bandwidth, it performs better than its competitive solution.

    A method for constructing low-density convolutional (LDC) codes with the degree distribution optimized for block low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes is presented. If the degree distribution is irregular, the constructed LDC codes are also irregular. In this letter we give the encoding and decoding method for LDC codes, and study how to avoid the short cycles of LDC codes. Some simulation results are also presented.

  • Logical Structure Analysis of Document Images Based on Emergent Computation

    A new method for logical structure analysis of document images is proposed in this paper as the basis for a document reader which can extract logical information from various printed documents. The proposed system consists of five basic modules: text line classification, object recognition, object segmentation, object grouping, and object modification. Emergent computation, which is a key concept of artificial life, is adopted for the cooperative interaction among modules in the system in order to achieve effective and flexible behavior of the whole system. It has three principal advantages over other methods: adaptive system configuration for various and complex logical structures, robust document analysis tolerant of erroneous feature detection, and feedback of high-level logical information to the low-level physical process for accurate analysis. Experimental results obtained for 150 documents show that the method is adaptable, robust, and effective for various document structures.
