  • BER Performance Evaluation in 22 MIMO Spatial Multiplexing Systems under Rician Fading Channels

    In this paper, BER (Bit Error Rate) performance in 22 MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) spatial multiplexing systems under Rician fading channels is evaluated. We examine BER performances employing inverse channel detection (ICD) under Rician fading channels, adding the phase of the direct path and Rician factor as a parameter. The results clearly indicate that the phase of the direct path and Rician factor have a great influence on BER performances employing ICD under Rician fading channels.

    In this paper we show some new look at large deviation theorems from the viewpoint of the information-spectrum (IS) methods, which has been first exploited in information theory, and also demonstrate a new basic formula for the large deviation rate function in general, which is expressed as a pair of the lower and upper IS rate functions. In particular, we are interested in establishing the general large deviation rate functions that are derivable as the Fenchel-Legendre transform of the cumulant generating function. The final goal is to show, under some mild condition, a necessary and sufficient condition for the IS rate function to be derivable as the Fenchel-Legendre transform of the cumulant generating function, i.e., to be a rate function of Gartner-Ellis type.

    We propose a medium access control (MAC) protocol for real-time applications in one-hop ad-hoc wireless networks. It is a distributed mechanism that takes account of priority and has a bounded packet delay. Nodes use energy signals to contend for the right to access the channel. Nodes, which have a packet to transmit, send energy signals or listen to the channel based on their binary frame. The node that has sent energy signals and has not heard any energy signals wins the right to access the channel. We use two schemes to determine the binary frame: at the beginning of a session, a node determines it based on its priority level and a random number; after successful transmission, based on a count of successful packet transmissions. With the first scheme, in order to reduce contention losses, the nodes that had won the right to access the channel but failed in transmission have priority over the other nodes. With the second scheme, the node that has the largest count, the one that has been waiting the longest, can send a packet without risking collision. The protocol provides higher probability of successful transmission and a limit on maximum packet delay. An analysis of the protocol provides conditions for the protocol to be stable. We evaluate the performance of the proposed protocol using simulations of a network with a mixed population of data and real-time nodes, whose source is constant bit rate (CBR) and a two state Markov on/off process.

    This paper describes a method for recognizing romanized Japanese words in learner English. They become noise and problematic in a variety of systems and tools for language learning and teaching including text analysis, spell checking, and grammatical error detection because they are Japanese words and thus mostly unknown to such systems and tools. A problem one encounters when recognizing romanized Japanese words in learner English is that the spelling rules of romanized Japanese words are often violated. To address this problem, the described method uses a clustering algorithm reinforced by a small set of rules. Experiments show that it achieves an F-measure of 0.879 and outperforms other methods. They also show that it only requires the target text and an English word list of reasonable size.

    This paper presents an improved min-sum iterative decoding scheme for regular and irregular LDPC codes. The proposed decoding scheme scales the extrinsic soft information from variable nodes to check. Different scaling factors are applied for iterations and the scaling factors are obtained by a simplified vector optimization method.

    MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) communications systems equipped with array antennas at both the transmitter and receiver sides are a promising scheme to realize higher rate and/or reliable data transmission. In this paper, capacity analysis of MIMO Rayleigh channel with spatial correlation at the receiver of multipath taken into account is presented. In general, a model configuration of local scattering around a mobile station in MIMO environment is carried out by simulation to examine spatial correlation coefficients. Based on statistical properties of the eigenvalues of correlated complex random Wishart matrices, the exact closed-form expressions of distribution of the eigenvalues are investigated. Then, the general closed-form evaluation of integral form is proposed based on Meijer's G-function. The results demonstrate that the ergodic capacities are improved by increasing the number of the antennas and the SNR's. Compared with i.i.d. (independent identically distributed) Rayleigh channel, the incremental improvement of correlated Rayleigh channel is reduced by spatial fading correlation. The analytical results validated by Monte-Carlo simulations show a good agreement.

    The measurements for Multiple Access Interference (MAI) problems and the improvement of the data rate are key issues on the advanced wireless networks. In this paper, the nonorthogonal Code Shift Keying Code Division Multiple Access (CSK/CDMA) with received-power adaptive access control scheme is proposed. In our system, a user who is ready to send measures the received power from other users, and then the user decides whether to transmit or refrain from transmission according to the received power and a pre-decided threshold. Not only overcoming the MAI problems, but our system also improve the throughput performance. The throughput performance of the proposed system is evaluated by theoretical analysis. Consequently, the nonorthogonal CSK/CDMA system improves by applying received-power adaptive access control. It was also found that the throughput performance of the nonorthogonal CSK/CDMA system is better than that of the orthogonal CSK/CDMA system at any Eb/N0. We conclude that the nonorthogonal CSK/CDMA system with received-power adaptive access control scheme is expected to be effective in advanced wireless networks.

  • On the Estimation of Carrier Frequency Offset and DC Offset for OFDM Systems

    In an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) receiver with direct-conversion architecture, carrier frequency offset (CFO) and direct-current offset (DCO), which cause severe performance degradation, need to be estimated and compensated. Recently, by investigating the subspace of OFDM signal after coarse DCO cancellation using time-domain average, we have proposed a nullspace-based estimator (NSE), for blind CFO and DCO estimation. In this paper, based on an analysis of the cost function of the NSE, we propose a common nullspace based estimator (CNSE). It is shown that by matching the frequency occupation of the received OFDM signal with CFO and DCO, the CNSE can achieve the full performance potential of the NSE. Also, the performance analysis reveals that the CNSE can asymptotically approach the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) of OFDM CFO estimation in the presence of DCO. Finally the analysis results are confirmed by simulations.

  • Observation of Blue-Light Emission from Tantalum Oxide Films Deposited by Radio-Frequency Magnetron Sputtering

    We obtained blue photoluminescence from tantalum oxide films deposited by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering after annealing. The maximum peak intensity of the photoluminescence was observed from a sample annealed at 600 for 20 min, and the peak wavelength was approximately 430 nm. Tantalum oxide films that emit blue light may be useful materials for novel active optical devices utilizing Ta2O5/SiO2 multilayered photonic crystals.

    Partial transmit sequence (PTS) is a well known technique used to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal. However, it has relatively high complexity due to the computation of multiple inverse fast Fourier transforms (IFFTs). To reduce this complexity, we use intermediate signals within a decimation in frequency (DIF) radix IFFT and propose a new PTS subblocking technique which requires the computation of only partial IFFTs. Performance results are presented which show a PAPR reduction similar to that with other techniques such as original PTS (O-PTS). Further, we show that complexity reduction can be achieved with either low or high radix IFFT algorithms.

    In order to evaluate the effect of Nakagami-Rice fading on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (OFDM) signal transmission when the delay profile exceeds the guard interval, a simple prediction model is developed by extending the Equivalent Transmission-Path (ETP) model for Rayleigh fading. The validity of the model is demonstrated by comparing the calculated values of BER to those obtained by computer simulation. Using the newly developed ETP-OFDM model, digital transmission characteristics of the OFDM signal in a multipath environment when the delay profile exceeds the guard interval are shown as a function of K factor, delay spread, guard interval and OFDM symbol period.

    Multipath energy capture and inter-symbol interference (ISI) are two intractable problems in high-data-rate Ultra-wideband (UWB) systems. To tackle the problems and simplify the receiver, we propose an adaptive interference avoidance scheme based on Pre-RAKE combining technique. The symbol repetition period (SRP) is regarded a changeable parameter in an ordered set to avoid severe interference paths and guarantee high data-rate. The set is known to both the transmitter and receiver. The index of the selected SRP is then sent to the receiver to coordinate the transmitter and receiver. The SRP can be updated adaptively according to the variations of the channels. Both theoretical analysis and simulations show that the ISI is mitigated and the transmission rate is improved simultaneously compared to the constant SRP transmission scheme.

    An image sensor for a use of colorimeter is characterized based on the CIE standard colorimetric observer. We use the method of least squares to derive a colorimetric characterization matrix between RGB output signals and CIE XYZ tristimulus values. This paper proposes an adaptive measuring method to obtain the chromaticity of colored scenes and illumination through a 33 camera transfer matrix under a certain illuminant. Camera RGB outputs, sensor status values, and photoelectric characteristic are used to obtain the chromaticity. Experimental results show that the proposed method is valid in the measuring performance.

    Gamma correction is an essential function and is time consuming task in every display device such as CRT and LCD. And gray scale CCT reproduction in most LCD are quite different from those of standard CRT. An automated fast and accurate display adjusment method and system for gamma correction and for constant gray scale CCT calibration of mobile phone LCD is presented in this paper. We develop the test pattern disply and register control program in mobile phone and devleop automatic measure program in computer using spectroradimeter. The proposed system is maintain given gamma values and CCT values accuratly. In addition, This system is possible to fast mobile phone LCD adjusment within one hour.

    The design and analysis of block ciphers is an established field of study which has seen significant progress since the early 1990s. Nevertheless, what remains on an interesting direction to explore in this area is to design block ciphers with provable security against powerful known attacks such as differential and linear cryptanalysis. In this paper we introduce seven new block cipher structures, named Feistel-variant A, B, CLEFIA and MISTY-FO-variant A, B, C, D structures, and show that these structures are provably resistant against differential cryptanalysis. The main results of this paper are that the average differential probabilities over at least 2 rounds of Feistel-variant A structure and 1 round of Feistel-variant B structure are both upperbounded by p2, while the average differential probabilities over at least 5 rounds of CLEFIA, MISTY-FO-variant A, B, C and D structures are upperbounded by p4+2p5, p4, p4, 2p4 and 2p4, respectively, if the maximum differential probability of a round F function is p. We also give provable security for the Feistel-variant A, B and CLEFIA structures against linear cryptanalysis. Our results are attained under the assumption that all of components in our proposed structures are bijective. We expect that our results are useful to design block ciphers with provable security against differential and linear cryptanalysis.

    A fast class-of-service oriented packet scheduling (FCOPS) has a service fairness problem since a credit pool for a service class is initialized at the beginning of a transmission cycle whose starting moment is fixed at a specific ONU. To remedy the service unfairness of FCOPS, we suggest an enhanced class-of-service oriented packet scheduling (ECOPS) that uses a new initialization cycle whose starting moment is fairly distributed to each ONU. Also, ECOPS generates a colorless grant to utilize the resource wastage, when traffic is light and the total sum of grants of an ONU is less than a minimum size. Using simulation, we validate ECOPS as superior to FCOPS in the mean delay and the service fairness.

    In this paper, we propose a method that uses Simulated Annealing (SA) to estimate the linear and nonlinear parameters of a closed-box loudspeaker system for implementing effective Mirror filters. The nonlinear parameters determined by W. Klippel's method are sometimes inaccurate and imaginary. In contrast, the proposed method can estimate the parameters with satisfactory accuracy due to its use of SA; the resulting impedance and displacement characteristics match those of an actual equivalent loudspeaker. A Mirror filter designed around these parameters can well compensate the nonlinear distortions of the loudspeaker system. Experiments demonstrate that the method can reduce the levels of nonlinear distortion by 5 dB to 20 dB compared to the before compensation condition.

  • Optical Rewritable Electronic Paper

    We developed new principle of electronic paper that is one side (for 2D image) or double side (for stereoscopic 3D image) light printable rewritable matter with polarization dependent gray scale. It consists of one or two liquid crystal displays based on Optical Rewritable (ORW) technology, which is the development of rotation azo-dye photoalignment. Each ORW display uses bare plastic or polarizers as substrates. The conductor is not required, as the image is formed by rewritable states of azimuthal direction, which results in 2D pattern of the liquid crystal twist angle. Continuous grey image maintains proper performance even when the device is bent. Simple construction provides durability and low cost, thin substrates minimize parallax for 3D image. Fluorescent dye dopant of liquid crystal partly absorbs light in blue and re-emit in green specter range improving photopic reflection and enhancing color of the ORW e-paper.

    This letter presents an efficient adaptive beamformer to deal with the multipath environments created by signal source scatterings. To improve the performance possible with the fixed forgetting factor, the regular adaptive forgetting factor algorithm is derived and applied to the subarray recursive least squares (RLS) beamforming. Simulations confirm that the proposed scheme has better performance than not only the conventional RLS algorithm but also the subarray RLS and adaptive forgetting factor RLS algorithms.
