  • An Integrated Calculation Method to Predict Arc Behavior

    The precision of magnetic field calculation is crucial to predict the arc behavior using magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model. A integrated calculation method is proposed to couple the calculation of magnetic field and fluid dynamics based on the commercial software ANSYS and FLUENT, which especially benefits to take into account the existence of the ferromagnetic parts. An example concerning air arc is presented using the method.

  • Optical Fiber Line Testing System Employing 1.65 µm Test Light Bypass Module for In-Service Monitoring of ADM Ring Networks

    This paper describes a novel optical fiber line testing system operating at 1.65 µm using test light bypass modules. We show a new testing configuration for add/drop multiplexer (ADM) ring networks. The test light bypass modules were installed in individual customer buildings so the test light can bypass the ADMs. We evaluated the bit-error performance with a 2.48832 Gbit/s ADM ring network using a prototype test light bypass module. We confirmed that this testing system can monitor the optical fiber cables of an ADM ring network, and that it causes no degradation in transmission quality. We show the operating area provided by the system dynamic range expressed in terms of fiber length and customer building number. The prototype system could monitor an ADM ring network linking five buildings with a 5 km loop. We also performed an in-service monitoring field trial in a 2.6 km ring network with three ADM nodes. This testing system enables us to reduce the operating, administration, and maintenance cost and improves the transmission quality of ADM ring networks.

    Research on the electromagnetic compatibility of functional module composed of two independent electromagnetic relays in a hermetically sealed shell is the technical foundation for integration and miniaturization of electronic equipment in the future. In this paper, 3D finite element method (FEM) was used to analyze the dynamic characteristics of twin-type relay interfered by uniform constant magnetic field and identify the sensitive direction in which the relay was easily interfered. The models of twin-type relay in three working states were founded. Through simulation and analysis, it was found out how the operation time and electromagnetic torque of twin-type relay changed with the outer interfered magnetic field. When the relay was on the point of operation failure, the critical value of magnetic field was calculated through simulation. The simulation results of the dynamic characteristics of twin-type relay agree well with the experimental data. The conclusion in this paper is of great value for research on the electromagnetic compatibility of relay functional module.

  • Analysis of Phase Shift Tolerance in a Coherent OCDM System Using FBG Phase En/Decoders

    We previously reported, for a coherent optical code division multiplexing (OCDM) system using fiber Bragg grating (FBG) phase en/decoders, that the signals exhibited phase shift tolerance for a difference between the light source wavelength and the Bragg wavelength of an FBG phase en/decoder when the two signals were multiplexed. However, the phase conditions of only the central wavelength among the ones forming a pulse were analyzed. For a more specific consideration, we calculated the phase of each wavelength forming the decoded pulse. In this report, the measured and calculated reflecting properties were compared and the reliability of the method was confirmed. We calculated the phase conditions of the decoded pulses and clarified the phase characteristics with regard to the phase modulation and the interference between pulses overlapped during decoding. For the realization of an asynchronous access, the FBG phase en/decoders should be designed so that the spreading time is the inverse of 2(texttransmission rate).

    This letter presents a method that offers the simple calculation of the electric shielding effectiveness of a collinear unequal narrow slot array in a planar conducting screen. An integral equation for an aperture electric field on the unequal narrow slot array is used instead of coupled integral equations for a multiple slot and solved by applying Galerkin's method of moments. Numerical results illustrate the shielding effectiveness and aperture electric field distributions of the collinear unequal two-narrow slot array by using single integral equation.

  • Photo Data Retrieval via P300 Evoked Potentials

    In this letter, a new concept of life log retrieval using human brain activities is presented. The non-invasive electroencephalogram (EEG) recording was applied to have P300 evoked potentials during the photo retrieving tasks. Three subjects tried to select the photo images that interest them among nine according to their mental states. It was found that with four times EEG averaging, the performances of target photo selections could reach 90% for two subjects. This concept would be applicable in future to achieve intuitive retrieval of life log with large quantities of data.

  • An Application of Linear Codes to the Problem of Source Coding with Partial Side Information

    This paper clarifies the adequacy of the linear channel coding approach for the source coding with partial side information at the decoder. A sufficient condition for an ensemble of linear codes which achieves the Wyner's bound is given. Our result reveals that, by combining a good lossy code, an LDPC code ensemble gives a good code for source coding with partial side information at the decoder.

    Based on the clonal selection principle proposed by Burnet, in the immune response process there is no crossover of genetic material between members of the repertoire, i.e., there is no knowledge communication during different elite pools in the previous clonal selection models. As a result, the search performance of these models is ineffective. To solve this problem, inspired by the concept of the idiotypic network theory, an expanded lateral interactive clonal selection algorithm (LICS) is put forward. In LICS, an antibody is matured not only through the somatic hypermutation and the receptor editing from the B cell, but also through the stimuli from other antibodies. The stimuli is realized by memorizing some common gene segment on the idiotypes, based on which a lateral interactive receptor editing operator is also introduced. Then, LICS is applied to several benchmark instances of the traveling salesman problem. Simulation results show the efficiency and robustness of LICS when compared to other traditional algorithms.

  • Deployable Overlay Network for Defense against Distributed SYN Flood Attacks

    Distributed denial-of-service attacks on public servers have recently become more serious. Most of them are SYN flood attacks, since the malicious attackers can easily exploit the TCP specification to generate traffic making public servers unavailable. We need a defense method which can protect legitimate traffic so that end users can connect the target servers during such attacks. In this paper, we propose a new framework, in which all of the TCP connections to the victim servers from a domain are maintained at the gateways of the domain (i.e., near the clients). We call the nodes maintaining the TCP connection defense nodes. The defense nodes check whether arriving packets are legitimate or not by maintaining the TCP connection. That is, the defense nodes delegate reply packets to the received connection request packets and identify the legitimate packets by checking whether the clients reply to the reply packets. Then, only identified traffic are relayed via overlay networks. As a result, by deploying the defense nodes at the gateways of a domain, the legitimate packets from the domain are relayed apart from other packets including attack packets and protected. Our simulation results show that our method can protect legitimate traffic from the domain deploying our method. We also describe the deployment scenario of our defense mechanism.

  • Theoretical Analysis of Route Expected Transmission Count in Multi-Hop Wireless Networks

    In multi-hop wireless networks, communication quality depends on the route from a source to a destination. In this paper, we consider a one-dimensional multi-hop wireless network where nodes are distributed randomly and theoretically analyze the relation between communication quality and routing policy using a measure called the Expected Transmission Count (ETX), which is the predicted number of data transmissions required to send a packet over that link, including retransmissions. First, we theoretically analyze the mean length of links, the mean number of hops, and the mean route ETX, which is the sum of the ETXs of all links in a route, of Longest Path Routing (LPR), and Shortest Path Routing (SPR). Second, we propose Adjustable Routing (AR), an approximation to Optimum Routing (OR), which minimizes route ETX. We theoretically compute the above characteristic values of AR. We also theoretically compute a lower bound of the mean route ETX of OR. We compare LPR, SPR, and OR using the results of analyses and show differences between these algorithms in the route ETX.

    Some OFDMA-based wireless commuication systems, e.g., Wireless Broadband Internet (WiBro) or Worldwide interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), support frequency reuse of 1 to maximize spectral efficiency. One of the efficient methods to reduce co-channel interference (CCI) caused by frequency reuse is fractional frequency reuse (FFR). In this paper, we propose and validate a novel frequency partitioning method and subcarrier assignment mechanism to improve system and individual capacity of mobile systems using FFR.

    The spectral efficiency of cooperative relaying in interference-limited environments in which a given channel is spatially reused is investigated. Cooperative relaying is a promising technique that uses neighboring stations to forward the data toward the destination in order to achieve spatial diversity gain. It has been reported that by introducing cooperative relaying into communication between an isolated source-destination pair, the error rate or spectral efficiency is generally improved. However, it is not intuitively clear whether cooperative relaying can improve the performance in interference-limited environments because the simultaneous transmission of multiple stations increases the number of interference signals. Assuming the most fundamental cooperative relaying arrangement, which consists of only one relay station, numerical results reveal that cooperative relaying is not always superior to non-cooperative single-hop and two-hop transmissions in terms of spectral efficiency.

  • Natural Object/Artifact Image Classification Based on Line Features

    Three features for image classification into natural objects and artifacts are investigated. They are 'line length ratio', 'line direction distribution,' and 'edge coverage'. Among the three, the feature 'line length ratio' shows superior classification accuracy (above 90%) that exceeds the performance of conventional features, according to experimental results in application to digital camera images. As the development of this feature was motivated by the fact that the edge sharpening magnitude in image-quality improvement must be controlled based on the image content, this classification algorithm should be especially suitable for the image-quality improvement applications.

    Introducing multi-agent (MA) technology into a SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system can improve the serviceability and enhance maintenance-free operation with the inter-terminal parameter (ITP) method. In addition, the system's distributed intelligent field terminals (IFTs) use a common algorithm that is unaffected by any changes to the system specifications. As a result of these innovations, the proposed system has much better serviceability because it is much easier to make modifications compared to that of conventional systems. This system has been implemented for practical purposes at over 60 sites.

  • Histogram Equalization Utilizing Window-Based Smoothed CDF Estimation for Feature Compensation

    In this letter, we propose a new histogram equalization method to compensate for acoustic mismatches mainly caused by corruption of additive noise and channel distortion in speech recognition. The proposed method employs an improved test cumulative distribution function (CDF) by more accurately smoothing the conventional order statistics-based test CDF with the use of window functions for robust feature compensation. Experiments on the AURORA 2 framework confirmed that the proposed method is effective in compensating speech recognition features by reducing the averaged relative error by 13.12% over the order statistics-based conventional histogram equalization method and by 58.02% over the mel-cepstral-based features for the three test sets.

  • An Efficient Adaptive Minor Subspace Extraction Using Exact Nested Orthogonal Complement Structure

    This paper presents a new adaptive minor subspace extraction algorithm based on an idea of Peng and Yi ('07) for approximating the single minor eigenvector of a covariance matrix. By utilizing the idea inductively in the nested orthogonal complement subspaces, the proposed algorithm succeeds to relax the numerical sensitivity which has been annoying conventional adaptive minor subspace extraction algorithms for example, Oja algorithm ('82) and its stabilized version: O-Oja algorithm ('02). Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm realizes more stable convergence than O-Oja algorithm.

    In this paper, a new large spreading code set with a uniform low cross-correlation is proposed. The proposed code set is capable of (1) increasing the number of assigned user (capacity) in a multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) system and (2) reducing the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. In this paper, we derive a new code set and present an example to demonstrate performance improvements of OFDM and MC-CDMA systems. Our proposed code set with code length of N has K=2N+1 number of codes for supporting up to (2N+1) users and exhibits lower cross correlation properties compared to the existing spreading code sets. Our results with subcarrier N=16 confirm that the proposed code set outperforms the current pseudo-orthogonal carrier interferometry (POCI) code set with gain of 5 dB at bit-error-rate (BER) level of 10-4 in the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and gain of more than 3.6 dB in a multipath fading channel.

    In this paper, we propose a new localization algorithm and improve the DV-Hop algorithm by using a differential error correction scheme that is designed to reduce the location error accumulated over multiple hops. This scheme needs no additional hardware support and can be implemented in a distributed way. The proposed method can improve location accuracy without increasing communication traffic and computing complexity. Simulation results show the performance of the proposed algorithm is superior to that of the DV-Hop algorithm.

    We have already proposed a Gigabit Ethernet-Optical Switched Access Network (GE-OSAN) architecture that realizes longer transmission distances and achieves higher security than the conventional Passive Optical Network (PON). To confirm the technical feasibility of the architecture, we introduce here a GE-OSAN prototype system for downstream transmission. We present the Optical Switching Module (OSM), which uses (Pb,La)(Zr,Ti)O3 (PLZT) optical packet switches, and show that it realizes switching within 10 ns of the designed position in the Inter-Frame Gap (IFG). We also introduce an Optical Network Unit (ONU) with optical burst receiver that uses off-the-shelf commercial devices to reduce its cost; two types of an optical to electrical signal (O/E) converter are implemented for performance comparison. After testing both of them, we select the one that satisfies our acquisition time requirement of 64 ns.
