    An all-optical phase multiplexing scheme for phase-modulated signals is proposed and experimentally demonstrated using four-wave mixing (FWM) in a highly-nonlinear fiber (HNLF). Two 10-Gb/s π/2-shifted differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) signals are experimentally demonstrated to be converted and phase-multiplexed into a 20-Gb/s differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK) signal with non-return-to-zero (NRZ) and return-to-zero (RZ) formats, respectively. Experimental results show that, due to phase-modulation-depth doubling effect and phase multiplexing effect in the FWM process, a DQPSK signal is successfully generated through the proposed all-optical phase multiplexing with improved receiver sensitivity and spectral efficiency.

    We present a robust object-based watermarking algorithm using the scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) in conjunction with a data embedding method based on Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT). The message is embedded in the DCT domain of randomly generated blocks in the selected object region. To recognize the object region after being distorted, its SIFT features are registered in advance. In the detection scheme, we extract SIFT features from the distorted image and match them with the registered ones. Then we recover the distorted object region based on the transformation parameters obtained from the matching result using SIFT, and the watermarked message can be detected. Experimental results demonstrated that our proposed algorithm is very robust to distortions such as JPEG compression, scaling, rotation, shearing, aspect ratio change, and image filtering.

  • Random Texture Defect Detection Using 1-D Hidden Markov Models Based on Local Binary Patterns

    In this paper a novel method for the purpose of random texture defect detection using a collection of 1-D HMMs is presented. The sound textural content of a sample of training texture images is first encoded by a compressed LBP histogram and then the local patterns of the input training textures are learned, in a multiscale framework, through a series of HMMs according to the LBP codes which belong to each bin of this compressed LBP histogram. The hidden states of these HMMs at different scales are used as a texture descriptor that can model the normal behavior of the local texture units inside the training images. The optimal number of these HMMs (models) is determined in an unsupervised manner as a model selection problem. Finally, at the testing stage, the local patterns of the input test image are first predicted by the trained HMMs and a prediction error is calculated for each pixel position in order to obtain a defect map at each scale. The detection results are then merged by an inter-scale post fusion method for novelty detection. The proposed method is tested with a database of grayscale ceramic tile images.

    We have proposed a method to detect and quantitatively extract anomalies from surveillance videos. Using our method, anomalies are detected as patterns based on spatio-temporal features that are outliers in new feature space. Conventional anomaly detection methods use features such as tracks or local spatio-temporal features, both of which provide insufficient timing information. Using our method, the principal components of spatio-temporal features of change are extracted from the frames of video sequences of several seconds duration. This enables anomalies based on movement irregularity, both position and speed, to be determined and thus permits the automatic detection of anomal events in sequences of constant length without regard to their start and end. We used a 1-class SVM, which is a non-supervised outlier detection method. The output from the SVM indicates the distance between the outlier and the concentrated base pattern. We demonstrated that the anomalies extracted using our method subjectively matched perceived irregularities in the pattern of movements. Our method is useful in surveillance services because the captured images can be shown in the order of anomality, which significantly reduces the time needed.

  • An Effective GML Documents Compressor

    As GML is becoming the de facto standard for geographic data storage, transmission and exchange, more and more geographic data exists in GML format. In applications, GML documents are usually very large in size because they contain a large number of verbose markup tags and a large amount of spatial coordinate data. In order to speedup data transmission and reduce network cost, it is essential to develop effective and efficient GML compression tools. Although GML is a special case of XML, current XML compressors are not effective if directly applied to GML, because these compressors have been designed for general XML data. In this paper, we propose GPress, a compressor for effectively compressing GML documents. To the best of our knowledge, GPress is the first compressor specifically for GML documents compression. GPress exploits the unique characteristics of GML documents to achieve good performance. Extensive experiments over real-world GML documents show that GPress evidently outperforms XMill (one of the best existing XML compressors) in compression ratio, while its compression efficiency is comparable to the existing XML compressors.

    The GaAs industry has been growing immensely during recent years. This is mainly driven by the tremendous growth of the wireless communication market, which is still continuously growing. Additionally, an emerging mmW market with applications in automotive, defense and optoelectronics is further driving the demand for GaAs components. The two largest European GaAs fabrication companies, UMS and Filtronic are very well positioned to address the complete frequency range from 1 GHz up to 100 GHz for commercial, high volume low cost markets, as well as individual niche applications. An overview of the companies' structures, their processes and design capabilities and also their new product developments will be presented in this paper.

    In the Evolved UTRA (UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access) uplink, single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) radio access was adopted owing to its advantageous low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) feature, which leads to wide coverage area provisioning with limited peak transmission power of user equipments. This paper proposes orthogonal pilot channel generation using the combination of FDMA and CDMA in the SC-FDMA-based Evolved UTRA uplink. In the proposed method, we employ distributed FDMA transmission for simultaneous accessing users with different transmission bandwidths, and employ CDMA transmission for simultaneous accessing users with identical transmission bandwidth. Moreover, we apply a code sequence with a good auto-correlation property such as a Constant Amplitude Zero Auto-Correlation (CAZAC) sequence employing a cyclic shift to increase the number of sequences. Simulation results show that the average packet error rate performance using an orthogonal pilot channel with the combination of FDMA and CDMA in a six-user environment, i.e., four users each with a 1.25-MHz transmission bandwidth and two users each with a 5-MHz transmission bandwidth, employing turbo coding with the coding rate of R = 1/2 and QPSK and 16QAM data modulation coincides well with that in a single-user environment with the same transmission bandwidth. We show that the proposed orthogonal pilot channel structure using the combination of distributed FDMA and CDMA transmissions and the application of the CAZAC sequence is effective in the SC-FDMA-based Evolved UTRA uplink.

    Simulations are often deployed to evaluate proposed mechanisms or algorithms in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET). In MANET, the impacts of some simulation parameters are noticeable, such as transmission range, data rate etc. However, the effect of mobility model is not clear until recently. Random Waypoint (RWP) is one of the most applied nodal mobility models in many simulations due to its clear procedures and easy employments. However, it exhibits the two major problems: decaying average speed and border effect. Both problems will overestimate the performance of the employed protocols and applications. Although many recently proposed mobility models are able to reduce or eliminate the above-mentioned problems, the concept of Diverse Average Speed (DAS) has not been introduced. DAS aims to provide different average speeds within the same speed range. In most mobility models, the average speed is decided when the minimum and maximum speeds are set. In this paper, we propose a novel mobility model, named General Ripple Mobility Model (GRMM). GRMM targets to provide a uniform nodal spatial distribution and DAS without decaying average speed. The simulations and analytic results have demonstrated the merits of the outstanding properties of the GRMM model.

    This paper describes the real-time implementation of a vision-based overtaking vehicle detection method for driver assistance systems using IMAPCAR, a highly parallel SIMD linear array processor. The implemented overtaking vehicle detection method is based on optical flows detected by block matching using SAD and detection of the flows' vanishing point. The implementation is done efficiently by taking advantage of the parallel SIMD architecture of IMAPCAR. As a result, video-rate (33 frames/s) implementation could be achieved.

    The redox (Reduction-Oxidation) flow battery is one of the most promising rechargeable batteries due to its ability to average loads and output of power sources. The transient characteristics are well known as the remarkable feature of the battery. Then it can also compensate for a sudden voltage drop. The dynamics are governed by the chemical reactions, fluid flow, and electrical circuit of its structure. This causes the difficulty of the analysis at transient state. This paper discusses the transient behavior of the redox flow battery based on chemical reactions. The concentration change of vanadium ions depends on the chemical reactions and the flow of electrolysis solution. The chemical reaction rate is restricted by the attached external electric circuit. In this paper, a model of the transient behavior is introduced. The validity of the derived model is examined based on experiments for a tested micro-redox flow battery system.

  • Designs and Fabrications of Photonic Crystal Fiber Couplers with Air Hole Controlled Tapers

    For the construction of photonic crystal fiber (PCF) systems using their unique properties, a PCF coupler (PCFC) is one of the key components of the systems. The characteristics of the PCFC depend on the state of air holes in the tapered region of the PCFC because the state of air holes in the tapered region affects light propagation in the PCFC taper. In this paper, coupling characteristics of PCFCs were theoretically investigated. In PCFCs with air hole remaining tapers, we found that a smaller elongation ratio i.e. a stronger elongation is required to obtain optical coupling as an air hole pitch or a ratio of air hole diameter to pitch is larger. In PCFCs with air hole collapsed tapers, it was clarified that a dependence of extinction ratio on air hole collapsed elongation ratio is higher for smaller elongation ratio. It was also clarified that an air hole remaining PCFC has slow wavelength characteristics in extinction ratio compared to an air hole collapsed PCFC. Air hole remaining PCFCs and air hole collapsed PCFCs were fabricated using a CO2 laser irradiation technique. We could successfully control whether air holes in the PCFC taper were remaining or collapsed by adjusting the irradiated laser power in the elongation process of the PCFC fabrication. It was experimentally clarified that the air hole remaining PCFC has slow wavelength characteristics in extinction ratio compared to the air hole collapsed PCFC. The tendencies of the measured wavelength characteristics of PCFCs agree with those of numerical results.

    The performance of recently developed Large Signal (LS) HBT model was evaluated with extensive LS measurements like Power spectrum, Load pull and Inter-modulation investigations. Proposed model has adopted temperature dependent leakage resistance and a simplified capacitance models. The model was implemented in ADS as SDD. Important feature of the model is that the main model parameters are taken directly from measurements in rather simple and understandable way. Results show good accuracy despite the simplicity of the model. To our knowledge the HBT model is one of a few HBT models which can handle high current & Power HBT devices, with significantly less model parameters with good accuracy.

  • Current Status and Future Prospects of SiC Power JFETs and ICs

    This paper will review the development of SiC power devices especially SiC power junction field-effect transistors (JFETs). Rationale and different approaches to the development of SiC power JFETs will be presented, focusing on normally-OFF power JFETs that can provide the highly desired fail-save feature for reliable power switching applications. New results for the first demonstration of SiC Power ICs will be presented and the potential for distributed DC-DC power converters at frequencies higher than 35 MHz will be discussed.

    In AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs), drain current reduction by current collapse phenomenon is a big obstacle for a high efficient operation of power amplifier application. In this study, we investigated the effects of SiN passivation film quality on the electrical characteristics of AlGaN/GaN HEMTs. First, we conducted some experiments to investigate the relationship between electrical characteristics of AlGaN/GaN HEMTs and various conditions of SiN passivation film by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PE-CVD). We found that both gate current leakage and current collapse were improved simultaneously by SiN passivation film deposited by optimized condition of NH3 and SiH4 gas flow. It is found that the critical parameter in the optimization is a IN-H/ ISi-H ratio measured by Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectra. Next, a thermal CVD SiN was applied to the passivation film to be investigated from the same point of view, because a thermal CVD SiN is well known to have good quality with low hydrogen content and high IN-H/ISi-H ratio. We confirmed that the thermal CVD SiN passivation could improve much further both of the gate leakage current and the current collapse in AlGaN/GaN-HEMTs. Furthermore, we tried to apply the thermal CVD SiN to the gate insulator in MIS (Metal Insulator Semiconductor) structure of AlGaN/GaN HEMTs. The thermal CVD SiN passivation was more suitable for the gate insulator than PE-CVD SiN passivation in a view of reducing current collapse phenomena. It could be believed that the thermal CVD SiN film is superior to the PE-CVD SiN film to achieve good passivation and gate insulator film for AlGaN/GaN HEMTs due to the low hydrogen content and the high IN-H/ISi-H ratio.

  • Normally-Off AlGaN/GaN HEMTs with Thin InGaN Cap Layer

    We have fabricated AlGaN/GaN HEMTs with a thin InGaN cap layer to implement normally-off HEMTs with a small extrinsic source resistance. The key idea is to employ the polarization-induced field in the InGaN cap layer, by which the conduction band is raised leading to the normally-off operation. Fabricated HEMT with an In0.2Ga0.8N cap layer with a thickness of 5 nm showed normally-off operation with a threshold voltage of 0.4 V and a maximum transconductance of 85 mS/mm for the device with a 1.9-µm-long gate. By etching-off the In0.2Ga0.8N cap layer at the region except under the gate using gate and ohmic electrodes as etching masks, the sheet resistance has decreased from 2.7 to 0.75 kΩ/, and the maximum transconductance has increased from 85 to 130 mS/mm due to a reduction of the extrinsic source resistance. The transconductance was increased from 130 to 145 mS/mm by annealing the devices at 250 for 20 minutes in a N2 atmosphere.

  • A Distributed Network Mobility Management Scheme for Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 Networks

    Route optimization for network mobility is a key technique for providing a node in a mobile network (Mobile Network Node or MNN) with high quality broadband communications. Many schemes adding route optimization function to Network Mobility (NEMO) Basic Support protocol, the standardized network mobility management protocol from the IETF nemo working group, have already been proposed in recent years. One such scheme, a scheme using Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6) aims to overcome micromobility management issues as well by applying a mechanism based on HMIPv6. The traditional scheme, however, suffers from a significant number of signaling messages as the number of MNNs and/or the number of their Correspondent Nodes (CNs) increase, because many messages notifying the MNNs' Home Agents (HAMNNs) and the CNs of the mobile network's movement are generated simultaneously each time the mobile network moves to the domain of another micromobility management router (Mobility Anchor Point or MAP). This paper proposes a scheme to overcome this problem. Our scheme reduces the number of signaling messages generated at the same time by managing the mobility of MNNs using multiple MAPs distributed within a network for load sharing. The results of simulation experiments show that our scheme works efficiently compared to the traditional scheme when a mobile network has many MNNs and/or these MNNs communicate with many CNs.

  • A New Security Architecture for Personal Networks and Its Performance Evaluation

    The concept of personal networks is very user-centric and representative for the next generation networks. However, the present security mechanism does not consider at all what happens whenever a mobile node (device) is compromised, lost or stolen. Of course, a compromised, lost or stolen mobile node (device) is a main factor to leak stored secrets. This kind of leakage of stored secrets remains a great danger in the field of communication security since it can lead to the complete breakdown of the intended security level. In order to solve this problem, we propose a 3-way Leakage-Resilient and Forward-Secure Authenticated Key Exchange (3LRFS-AKE) protocol and its security architecture suitable for personal networks. The 3LRFS-AKE protocol guarantees not only forward secrecy of the shared key between device and its server as well as providing a new additional layer of security against the leakage of stored secrets. The proposed security architecture includes two different types of communications: PN wide communication and communication between P-PANs of two different users. In addition, we give a performance evaluation and numerical results of the delay generated by the proposed security architecture.

  • An Adaptive Loss-Aware Flow Control Scheme for Delay-Sensitive Applications in OBS Networks

    Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is one of the most promising switching technologies for next generation optical networks. As delay-sensitive applications such as Voice-over-IP (VoIP) have recently become popular, OBS networks should guarantee stringent Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for such applications. Thus, this paper proposes an Adaptive Loss-aware Flow Control (ALFC) scheme, which adaptively decides on the burst offset time based on loss-rate information delivered from core nodes for assigning a high priority to delay-sensitive application traffic. The proposed ALFC scheme also controls the upper-bounds of the factors inducing delay and jitter for guaranteeing the delay and jitter requirements of delay-sensitive application traffic. Moreover, a piggybacking method used in the proposed scheme accelerates the guarantee of the loss, delay, and jitter requirements because the response time for flow control can be extremely reduced up to a quarter of the Round Trip Time (RTT) on average while minimizing the signaling overhead. Simulation results show that our mechanism can guarantee a 10-3 loss-rate under any traffic load while offering satisfactory levels of delay and jitter for delay-sensitive applications.

  • Fuzzy Controlled Individual Cell Equalizers for Lithium-Ion Batteries

    A fuzzy logic control battery equalizing controller (FLC-BEC) is adopted to control the cell voltage balancing process for a series connected Li-ion battery string. The proposed individual cell equalizer (ICE) is based on the bidirectional Cuk converter operated in the discontinuous capacitor voltage mode (DCVM) to reduce the switching loss and improve equalization efficiency. The ICE with the proposed FLC-BEC can reduce the equalizing time, maintain safe operations during the charge/discharge state and increase the battery string capacity.
