A new formula on the Hermite expansion is presented in an explicit form. An application of the formula is given to a random boundary value problem: a plane wave reflection from a flat plane, of which position is randomly distributed in the normal direction, is presented. Several numerical results are given for a verification of the formula and for a discussion of the exact behavior of the fluctuation part of the reflection power.

Steganography is a technique that conceals the very existence of communication by means of hiding secret messages in innocuous cover objects. We previously developed a steganographic method that uses standard MIDI files (SMFs) as cover objects. Our method could conceal the secret messages in SMFs without changing their sound. We also investigated the effectiveness of our method against steganalysis. This steganalytic research revealed that files embedded using our method are vulnerable to detection, because stego SMFs lose the imprints borne by sequencers. In this study, we describe two improved methods of steganography that enable even stego SMFs to keep the sequencer's imprint. As a result, we improved the resistance of SMFs against steganalysis but there was a slight reduction in the embedding rate.

A constant voltage/constant current (CV/CC) parallel operation heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) power amplifier (PA) configuration is presented, and its design method is described. A resistor base feed (CC mode) HBT is connected to an inductor base feed (CV mode) HBT in parallel, and compensates the gain expansion of the CV mode HBT due to near class-B operation. By adding CC mode HBT, the total quiescent current can be decreased from 32 mA to 23 mA with adjacent channel leakage power ratio (ACPR) < -40.0 dBc. At the maximum output power region, the fabricated PA achieves output power (Pout) of 26.8 dBm and power added efficiency (PAE) of 42.0% with ACPR of -40.0 dBc, and shows the comparable performances with a conventional PA using CV mode HBT.

This paper proposes a novel extraction method of line parameters for multi-coupled lines on high-speed and high-density PCBs, where it uses TDR measurement in time domain and S-parameter measurement in frequency domain. The accuracy of the proposed method have been verified experimentally by comparing the crosstalk noise in the time domain, where (1) the proposed method extracts RLGC matrices by measuring the test pattern, (2) the crosstalk noise is obtained through SPICE simulation using the extracted RLGC matrices, and (3) the SPICE-simulated crosstalk noise is compared with the measured crosstalk noise. From the crosstalk noise comparison, the proposed method is proven to be very accurate. For N-coupled lines, the proposed method doesn't require expensive 2N-port probe for N-coupled lines but only two-port probe, which provides a simple, accurate, and economic extraction method of line parameters for multi-coupled line on the PCB. In the early stage of PCB design, the proposed method is very useful, because it extracts accurate interconnection parameters of each test board and enables to compensate various side effects due to the variation of PCB fabrication process. Also, the proposed method is necessary to analyze the signal integrity of future high-density and high-speed digital system on PCBs.

This paper considers a transaction-based multi-server system with rejuvenation, and derive the optimal software rejuvenation policies under some system dependability measures; the steady-state availability, the probability of transaction loss and the upper bound of mean response time on transactions. We compare the system configuration based on a single-server with that based on a multi-server in terms of the software rejuvenation scheme. In numerical examples, we calculate the optimal software rejuvenation timing and its associated dependability measure, and refer to the effect of preventive maintenance in the transaction-based multi-server software systems.

In this letter, the effect of an imperfect channel estimation and carrier frequency offset on the performance of transmit diversity OFDM systems is investigated. For the performance evaluation, the average bit error rate (BER) expression is derived in the presence of the imperfect channel information including both the inherent estimation error and the imperfect windowing error derived in a mismatched channel separation.

Multiple access interference and near-far effect cause the performance of the conventional single user detector in DS/CDMA systems to degrade. Due to high complexity of the optimum multiuser detector, suboptimal multiuser detectors with less complexity and reasonable performance have received considerable attention. In this paper we apply the classic and a new modified genetic algorithm for multiuser detection of DS/CDMA signals. It is shown that the classic genetic algorithm (GA) reaches an error floor at high signal to noise ratios (SNR) while the performance of proposed modified GA is much better than the classic one and is comparable to the optimum detector with much less complexity. The results hold true for AWGN and fading channels. We also describe another GA called as meta GA to find the optimum parameters of the modified GA. We compare the performance of proposed method with the other detectors used in CDMA.

We have already proposed a carrier power control scheme of OFDM that makes it possible to improve the bit error rate characteristic. However, the data on the lost carriers by the severe fading or large additive noise can't be recovered by only this power control scheme. In this paper, a method of transmission power control of OFDM carriers combined with data spreading scheme in the frequency domain is proposed. In the proposed system, transmission power of each carrier is controlled so as to maximize the average signal to noise ratio of the data symbols after de-spreading the signals from DFT. As the results of computer simulations, it is confirmed that the proposed system can improve the bit error rate characteristics under multi-path channel.

In this paper, expressions are derived for the bit error rate (BER) of the multicarrier-CDMA (MC-CDMA) downlink in the presence of pure impulsive interference and a frequency-selective fading and the BER performance is numerically evaluated by a Monte-Carlo simulation method. Minimum mean square error combining (MMSEC) and orthogonal restoration combining (ORC) are considered for frequency-domain equalization. The joint weight of antenna diversity reception using maximal ratio combining (MRC) and frequency equalization combining is derived. The MC-CDMA transmission performance in the presence of pure impulsive interference is compared with that of DS-CDMA transmission.

Passification of a non-square linear system is considered by using a parallel feedforward compensator (PFC) and a squaring gain matrix. In contrast to the previous result, a technical assumption is removed by modifying the structure of the PFC. As a result, the broader class of non-square systems can be made passive by the proposed design method. Using the static output feedback (SOF) algorithms, the input-dimensional PFC and the squaring matrix can be designed systematically. The effectiveness of the proposed method is illustrated by practical system examples in the control literature.

This paper presents an algorithm for fingerprint image restoration using Digital Reaction-Diffusion System (DRDS). The DRDS is a model of a discrete-time discrete-space nonlinear reaction-diffusion dynamical system, which is useful for generating biological textures, patterns and structures. This paper focuses on the design of a fingerprint restoration algorithm that combines (i) a ridge orientation estimation technique using an iterative coarse-to-fine processing strategy and (ii) an adaptive DRDS having a capability of enhancing low-quality fingerprint images using the estimated ridge orientation. The phase-only image matching technique is employed for evaluating the similarity between an original fingerprint image and a restored image. The proposed algorithm may be useful for person identification applications using fingerprint images.

The first implementations of X-band AlGaN/GaN HEMT single-ended frequency doublers are presented in this paper. Two types of fundamental frequency signal reflector schemes have been demonstrated for the frequency doubler application. Open-circuited quarter-wavelength microstrip line at the fundamental frequency is utilized for the reflector in a conventional way. In the other architecture a printed antenna is employed as a radiator as well as a novel fundamental frequency reflector. A microstrip rectangular patch antenna operating at the second harmonic frequency of the doubler was designed and integrated with AlGaN/GaN HEMT based on active integrated antenna design concept. Using AlGaN/GaN HEMT with 1 mm gate periphery, two 4 to 8 GHz frequency doublers were designed by the described design methodologies, fabricated, and tested. For the conventional frequency doubler, a conversion gain of 0.6 dB and with an output power of 15 dBm was observed. A conversion gain of 5 dB and an output power of 25 dBm with embedded antenna gain were achieved at a drain voltage of 12 V for the doubler integrated with the patch antenna.

The current paper presents an effective deblocking algorithm for block-based coded images using singularity detection in a wavelet transform. Blocking artifacts appear periodically at block boundaries in block-based coded images. The local maxima of a wavelet transform modulus detect all singularities, including blocking artifacts, from multiscale edges. Accordingly, the current study discriminates between a blocking artifact and an edge by estimating the Lipschitz regularity of the local maxima and removing the wavelet transform modulus of a blocking artifact that has a negative Lipschitz regularity exponent. Experimental results showed that the performance of the proposed algorithm was objectively and subjectively superior.

    1985-1992

This paper presents a new modulation scheme for Very-High Speed Digital Subscriber Lines (VDSL) modem, featuring a Multi-Code Multi-Carrier Code Division Multiple Access (MC2-CDMA) modulation. The system takes advantage from both the CDMA modulation and the Multi-Carrier transmission, and furthermore the channel throughput is increased adopting a multi-code approach. Starting from an overview of this novel scheme, encompassing the transmitter, channel and receiver description, a brief review of the equalization techniques is also considered and a proper bit-loading algorithm is derived to find out the achievable overall channel rate. The aim of this paper, besides introducing this novel scheme, is to demonstrate its suitability for a VDSL environment, where the achievable channel rate represents a real challenge. By means of a further optimisation, a general improvement of the system performance with respect to the standardized Discrete Multi Tone (DMT) modulation is also demonstrated.

Carrier frequency and symbol timing errors may greatly degrade the performance of the orthogonal frequency division mulitplexing (OFDM) system, especially in multipath environment. In this paper, we explore the cyclostationarity of OFDM signals, which only relies on second order statistics, to estimate the synchronization offset. First, a coarse carrier frequency offset estimator for multipath environment is developed using the second order statistics of the received OFDM signal. It has a wide capture range though not accurate. Second, we introduce a new synchronization algorithm based on cyclostationarity and matched filter theories, which can get the maximal estimation SNR in multipath environment. Both estimators utilize channel state information to achieve better estimation performance and are non-pilot aided. They can be combined to form a whole OFDM synchronizer for multipath environment. Finally, simulations confirm the performance of the estimation algorithm.

  • Stable Learning Algorithm for Blind Separation of Temporally Correlated Acoustic Signals Combining Multistage ICA and Linear Prediction

    2028-2036

We newly propose a stable algorithm for blind source separation (BSS) combining multistage ICA (MSICA) and linear prediction. The MSICA is the method previously proposed by the authors, in which frequency-domain ICA (FDICA) for a rough separation is followed by time-domain ICA (TDICA) to remove residual crosstalk. For temporally correlated signals, we must use TDICA with a nonholonomic constraint to avoid the decorrelation effect from the holonomic constraint. However, the stability cannot be guaranteed in the nonholonomic case. To solve the problem, the linear predictors estimated from the roughly separated signals by FDICA are inserted before the holonomic TDICA as a prewhitening processing, and the dewhitening is performed after TDICA. The stability of the proposed algorithm can be guaranteed by the holonomic constraint, and the pre/dewhitening processing prevents the decorrelation. The experiments in a reverberant room reveal that the algorithm results in higher stability and separation performance.

This paper presents a Field-Programmable Digital Filter (FPDF) IC that employs carry-propagation-free redundant arithmetic algorithms for faster computation and multiple-valued current-mode circuit technology for high-density low-power implementation. The original contribution of this paper is to evaluate, through actual chip fabrication, the potential impact of multiple-valued current-mode circuit technology on the reduction of hardware complexity required for DSP-oriented programmable ICs. The prototype FPDF fabrication with 0.6 µm CMOS technology demonstrates that the chip area and power consumption can be reduced to 41% and 71%, respectively, compared with the standard binary logic implementation.

This paper studies the local Poisson property of aggregated IP traffic. First, it describes the scenario where IP traffic presents a Poisson-like characteristic within some limited range of time scales when packets from independent traffic streams are aggregated. Each of the independent traffic streams corresponds to a series of correlated IP packets such as those of a transport connection. Since the Poisson-like characteristic is observed only within some limited range of time scales, we call this characteristic the local Poisson property. The limited range of time scales of the local Poisson property can be estimated from a network configuration and characteristics of transport connections. Second, based on these observations, we seek the possibility to apply an ordinary Poisson process to evaluation of the packet loss probability in IP networks. The analytical investigation, where IP traffic is modeled by a superposition of independent branching Poisson processes that presents the local Poisson property, suggests that the packet loss probability can be estimated by a finite-buffer queue with a Poisson process when the buffer size is within a certain range. The investigation is verified by simulations. These findings expand the applicability of conventional Poisson-based approaches to IP network design issues.

The authors have established new switching architecture of all optical WDM network suitable for the application of video transmission. In this paper, emphasis is put on a setup of a wavelength connection based on contiguous wave-band pool and we have proposed new Wave-Band Routing and Assignment (WBRA) method which provides simple switching and high speed wavelength assignment. Assuming the environment without wavelength convertor, our wave-band switching scheme is applied to several network topologies for performance evaluation. Then effectiveness and feasibility of this scheme are confirmed from a viewpoint of the number of required wavelengths. Simulation results indicate that our proposal scheme attains lower number of required wavelengths as compared to the fixed wave-band scheme. Assuming to use wavelength convertors, we have also evaluated the situation that the number of hops is restricted.
