  • An Enhanced Scheme for Combined Mobility Management Based on a New Mobile Station State Model in GPRS

    In General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), combined mobility management is defined to efficiently perform both GSM and GPRS mobility management in a combined manner. In this letter, an enhanced scheme for combined mobility management based on a new mobile station (MS) state model is proposed. The steady state probabilities of the proposed MS state model are derived and the performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed. The results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional scheme, especially for low mobility MSs.

  • A One-Time Password Authentication Method for Low Spec Machines and on Internet Protocols

    Applications for transforming money or personal information are increasingly common on the Internet and in mobile communications. These applications require user authentication for confirming legal users. One-time password authentication methods change the verifier every time by sending the present verifier along with the next verifier. However, such methods risk attacks because those protocols use two verifiers every session. The SAS (Simple And Secure password authentication protocol) is a one-time password authentication method that the method uses a hash function five times, but it requires high overhead on low spec machines. In this paper, we propose a new method, SAS-2, which reduces overhead of hash function adaptation by 40%. This method has a mutual authentication phase, which maintains synchronous data communications in its authentication procedure. Moreover, SAS-2 can be applied to key-free systems.

    The threshold voltage mismatch of FD (Fully depleted) SOI (Silicon on insulator) devices have been studied. Floating body MOSFETs operating at high drain voltage show a large mismatch in the threshold voltage compared with body-tied MOSFETs. Those experimental data under different drain voltages indicate that both floating body effect and DIBL (Drain induced barrier lowering) are involved in the threshold voltage mismatch of floating body MOSFETs.

    Novel designs of multiple-valued logic (quaternary) half adder, full adder, and carry-lookahead adder are introduced. The proposed circuits are static and operate in voltage-mode. Moreover, there is no current flow in steady states, and thus, no static power dissipation. Although the comparison in transistor count shows that the proposed quaternary circuits are larger than two respective binary ones, benefits in parallel addition arise from the use of multiple-valued logic. Firstly, the ripple-carry additions are faster because the number of carries is half compared to binary ones and the propagation delay from the input carry through the output carry is relatively small. Secondly, the carry-lookahead scheme exhibits less complexity, which leads to overall reduction in transistor count for addition with large number of bits.

    This paper proposes a new configuration of the Doherty amplifier by introducing digital signal processing that realizes a high efficiency over a wide range of output power. The configuration includes two branches; one branch has a class AB amplifier as the carrier amplifier and the other has two class B amplifiers in cascade as the peak amplifier. Each branch is directly controlled by the digital signal processing unit. The unit controls input power allocation to each branch by a method derived from equations characterizing the carrier and the peak constituent amplifiers. The method includes the compensation of the amplifier for degradation due to nonlinearities. The output power of each constituent amplifier is adjusted by drain DC biases. Calculated characteristics agree well with those obtained by the measurement of a fabricated proposed amplifier, whose efficiency is higher than that of the conventional class AB power amplifiers. Furthermore, a simulation for the OFDM signal specified by the radio LAN shows that the amplifier has sufficient linearity, and that the efficiency exceeds 20% at the output of 20 dBm.

  • A Workflow Enactment Model for Next Generation Internet Services

    Providing workflow function is one of the most important research issues in the next generation Internet services such as Web Service and Grid Computing. Scalability for Internet scale services, reliability for unstable Internet resources, and management functions of workflow systems are the essential requirements in these environments. However, existing workflow enactment models for enterprises could not meet these requirements. This paper proposes the PeerFlow that is a P2P based workflow enactment model, to provide workflow functions for the next generation Internet services. To apply P2P model to the workflow enactment model, we introduce the concept of the instance buddy and the index data of workflow instances, then propose the principle architecture of the PeerFlow. The instance buddy enables the autonomous processing of peers, and it is used for recovery and monitoring functions. This paper also presents the recovery capabilities of PeerFlow with formal proofs for the reliability issues and a performance evaluation with SimPy, the Python simulation package.

  • Optimal Design for Upgrading Optical Amplifier Systems Based on Cost-Effective Homodyne Detection

    An upgrade scheme using identical sending lights and local lights for optical amplifier systems based on homodyne detection is described. Optimum receiving loss for maximizing the SNR is analytically derived for the proposed configuration where the local taped lights are low level to avoid a sending power decrease. Derived formulas describing the optimum loss condition and the maximum SNR show that 10 Gbit/s systems can be cost effectively upgraded to 40 Gbit/s systems with the same repeater spacing.

  • Microphone Array with Minimum Mean-Square Error Short-Time Spectral Amplitude Estimator for Speech Enhancement

    This paper describes a new speech enhancement system that employs a microphone array with post-processing based on minimum mean-square error short-time spectral amplitude (MMSE-STSA) estimator. To get more accurate MMSE-STSA estimator in a microphone array, modification and refinement procedure are carried out from each microphone output. Performance of the proposed system is compared with that of other methods using a microphone array. Noise removal experiments for white and pink noises demonstrate the superiority of the proposed speech enhancement system to others with a microphone array in average output SNRs and cepstral distance measures.

    The number of customers of a service for Internet access from cellular phones in Japan has been explosively increasing for some time. We analyze the relation between the number of customers and the volume of traffic, with a view to finding clues to the structure of human relations among the very large set of potential customers of the service. The traffic data reveals that this structure is a scale-free network, and we calculate the exponent that governs the distribution of node degree in this network. The data also indicates that people who have many friends tend to subscribe to the service at an earlier stage. These results are useful for investigating various fields, including marketing strategies, the propagation of rumors, the spread of computer viruses, and so on.

    Ad Hoc Networks are transmission networks in the structure of wireless networks that consist of many mobile hosts. They do so without the support from other communication infrastructures like Base Stations, and directly use wireless networks for data-transmission. This paper provides a general explanation of related protocols for setting up routes and their possible problems. In addition, related researches are described with their method of solving problems and reducing the possibility of problems occurring. Then, a novel constructive protocol called Partition-Timing Routing Protocol (PTR) is presented. If any covered node needs to transmit data to others outside the scope, it has to be managed by a core node. This protocol is able to adjust neighboring nodes covered in the scope, to select certain nodes to be their own core node. In addition, the timing for updating and adjusting the data of the covered scope is different from other methods, and at the same time it reduces the load of the entire network and makes it more flexible.

    The goal of source localization in the brain is to estimate a set of parameters for representing source characteristics; one of such parameters is the source number. We here propose a method combining the Powell algorithm with the information criterion method for determining the optimal dipole number. The potential errors can be calculated by the Powell algorithm with the concentric 4-sphere head model and 32 electrodes, then the number of dipoles is determined by the information criterion method with the potential errors mentioned above. This method has the advantages of a high identification accuracy of dipole number and a small number of EEG data because in this method: (1) only one EEG topography is used in the computation, (2) 32 electrodes are used to obtain the EEG data, (3) the optimal dipole number can be obtained by this method. In order to prove our method to be efficient, precise and robust to noise, 10% white noise is introduced to test this method theoretically. Some investigations are presented here to show our method is an advanced approach for determining the optimal dipole number.

    This paper offers an initial analysis of economic and market issues in the development and deployment of mobile remote physiological monitoring services for medical patients through wireless wearable sensors and actuators. Examining the characteristics of the service technologies and related industries, this study focuses on the structure, participants and roles of standardisation of the layers within the emerging mobile remote physiological monitoring industry. The study concludes that the structure of the emerging mobile remote physiological monitoring industry will be oriented about service provision, be integrated with other personal / patient data storage services and be heavily influenced by the interplay of technological developments, the health market structure, existing players and regulation. Additionally, the keys players are likely to be the system integrators and service providers concentrating on large institutional customers. A focus of the paper is analysing both the causes and implications of a modular, horizontally layered industry structure likely to result from the mix of technologies, suppliers and customers as this market develops. The paper discusses why, although horizontal specialisation is the most likely outcome, there is little risk of key layers becoming commoditised. The paper also discusses the appropriate types and levels of standardisation and equipment certification activities that should be encouraged, along with from which groups and industries the pressure for these will come.

  • Efficient Routing of Board-Level Optical Clocks for Ultra High-Speed Systems

    A new approach to optical clock distribution utilizing optical waveguide interconnect technology is introduced. In this paper, we develop a new algorithm for design and optimization of embedded optical clock distribution networks for printed wiring boards. The optimization approach takes into account bending and propagation losses of optical waveguides. Less than 26.1 psec in signal timing skew is obtained for a signal flight time of 614.38 psec. About 15% reduction in optical power consumption is also obtained over clock nets routed with existing (optical) methods.

    The parasitic capacitances induced in the spaces between an air-bridge interconnection and a drain pad (Cad), and between an air-bridge interconnection and a gate head (Cag) from a power CPW PHEMT are not negligible. In this paper, a modified equivalent circuit model for a CPW PHEMT and an improved CPW PHEMT for millimeter-wave applications are proposed. These were proved by measuring the fabricated CPW PHEMT and improved CPW PHEMT. These capacitances were confirmed by measuring the gate-source coupling using CPW PHEMT patterns without an active layer. From the measurements, the improved CPW PHEMT has the lowest coupling (loss) and the highest S21 gain among four different types tested at 60 GHz. And the improved CPW PHEMT is a feasible device which can be directly applied in millimeter-waves as a power device.

    DNA Sequence Design Problem is a crucial problem in information-based biotechnology such as DNA computing. In this paper, we introduce a powerful design strategy for DNA sequences by refining Random Generator. Random Generator is one of the design strategies and offers great advantages, but it is not a good algorithm for generating a large set of DNA sequences. We propose a Two-Step Search algorithm, then show that TSS can generate a larger set of DNA sequences than Random Generator by computer simulation.

  • Shot Detection from MPEG Compressed Video

    A method for automatic and fast shot detection for the MPEG video is proposed. Shot detection is the first step in analyzing and searching a large amount of video data. Our proposed method is based on activity of images as well as intra MBs in the video frame. It is possible to detect scene changes rapidly by using information from the compressed MPEG video data without the need for full-frame decoding. Experimental results show that the proposed method can provide good performance at a low computational cost.

  • New Cycling Environments Using Multimodal Knowledge and Ad-hoc Network

    We have been developing new cycling environments by using knowledge sharing and speech communication. We have offered multimodal knowledge contents to share knowledge on safe and exciting cycling. We accumulated 140 contents, focused on issues such as riding techniques, trouble shootings, and preparations on cycling. We have also offered a new way of speech communication using an ad-hoc wireless LAN technology for safe cycling. Group cycling requires frequent communication to lead the group safely. Speech communication achieves spontaneous communication between group members without looking around or speaking loudly. Experimental result through actual cycling has shown the effectiveness of sharing multimodal knowledge contents and speech communication. Our new developed environment has an advantage of increasing multimodal knowledge through the accumulation of personal experiences of actual cycling.

    Most of the existing studies on storing and searching XML documents effectively manipulate each XML document independently. Therefore, techniques for storing XML documents together that have similar meaning or structure are required for efficiency. Also, as a unified access method for various XML storage systems that have different storage forms, studies to integrate the DTD or XML schema of each storage system into one are required, because many XML documents do not have a particular DTD or XML schema, or XML documents can be written in various ways. Therefore, studies on the integration techniques for XML instances are needed. The XML integration technique can be used effectively in the case of constructing a data warehouse for heterogeneous XML storage systems. The proposed integration techniques remove the space duplicated for the same elements in XML documents. The proposed techniques significantly reduce the search time for general queries on the XML documents because it stores the related parts in XML documents close.

    This study was conducted to examine the relationship between technostress - techno-centered tendency- and antisocial behavior on computers. Questionnaire data of computer operators were analyzed by multivariate-analysis. The results of the analysis indicated that high techno-centered tendency has a strong relationship with antisocial behavior on computers. Among the component factors of techno-centered tendency, absorption in operating computers was proven to have the strongest association with antisocial behavior on computers.

  • Robotic Hand System for Non-verbal Communication

    The purpose of this study is to design a humanoid robotic hand system that is capable of conveying feelings and sensitivities by finger movement for the non-verbal communication between men and robots in the near future. In this paper, studies have been made in four steps. First, a small-sized and light-weight robotic hand was developed to be used as the humanoid according to the concept of extracting required minimum motor functions and implementing them to the robot. Second, basic characteristics of the movement were checked by experiments, simple feedforward control mechanism was designed based on velocity control, and a system capable of tracking joint time-series change command with arbitrary pattern input was realized. Third, tracking performances with regard to sinusoidal input with different frequencies were studied for evaluation of the system thus realized, and space- and time-related accuracy were investigated. Fourth, the sign language motions were generated as examples of information transmission by finger movement. A series of results thus obtained indicated that this robotic hand is capable of transmitting information promptly with comparatively high accuracy through the movement.
