A large number of techniques have been proposed for acceleration of the Hough Transform, because the transformation is computationally very expensive in general. It is known that the sampling interval in parameter space is strongly related to the computation cost. The precision of the transformation and the processing speed are in a trade-off relationship. No fair comparison of the processing speed between various methods was performed in all previous works, because no criterion had been given for the sampling interval of parameter, and because the precision of parameter was not equal between methods. At the beginning of our research, we derive the relationship between the sampling interval and the precision of parameter. Then we derive a framework for comparing computation cost under equal condition for precision of parameter, regarding the total number of sampling points of a parameter as the computation cost. We define the transformation error in the Hough Transform, and the error is regarded as transformation noise. In this paper we also propose a design method called "Noise-level Shaping," by which we can set the transformation noise to an arbitrarily level. The level of the noise is varied according to the value of a parameter. Noise-level Shaping makes it possible for us to find the efficient parameterization and to find the efficient sampling interval in a specific application of the Hough Transform.

Screen pattern used in offset-printed documents has been one of great obstacles in developing document recognition systems that handle color documents. This paper proposes a selective smoothing method for filtering the screen patterns/noise in high-resolution color document images. Experimental results show that the method yields significant improvements in character pattern extraction.

A portable biofuel cell with an anode modified with glucose oxidase/ferrocene and a cathode modified with bilirubin oxidase was fabricated on a flexible polyimide substrate. The anode and the cathode with an area of 3$ imes$10,mm$^2$ were separated with a gap of 1,mm. Solidified glucose biofuel units were prepared by solidifying 50--200,mM glucose aqueous solution containing 0.5--2.5% agarose. The influences of the biofuel volume and glucose concentrations on power generation were investigated. The maximum power density was almost independent on the agarose concentration, and it continuously decreased as time clasped possibly due to the consumption of glucose and/or release of the enzymes from the electrodes. The maximum power and power density were 0.32 $mu $W and 1.08,$mu $W/cm$^2$ at 0.17,V, respectively when the solidified hydrogel biofuel unit with a dimension of 13$ imes$24$ imes$4 mm$^3$ containing the 100,mM glucose aqueous solution and 2.5, wt% agarose was used. The biofuel cell continued to deliver the power density over 0.5,$mu $W/cm$^2$ for more than 1,h.

Wireless LAN (WLAN) roaming systems, such as eduroam, enable the mutual use of WLAN facilities among multiple organizations. As a consequence of the strong demand for WLAN roaming, it is utilized not only at universities and schools but also at the venues of large events such as concerts, conferences, and sports events. Moreover, it has also been reported that WLAN roaming is useful in areas afflicted by natural disasters. This paper presents a novel WLAN roaming system over Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) that is useful for the use cases shown above. The proposed system is based on two methods as follows: 1) Automatic authentication path generation method decreases the WLAN roaming system deployment costs including the wiring cost and configuration cost. Although the wiring cost can be reduced by using WMN technologies, some additional configurations are still required if we want to deploy a secure user authentication mechanism (e.g. IEEE 802.1X) on WLAN systems. In the proposed system, the Access Points (APs) can act as authenticators automatically using RadSec instead of RADIUS. Therefore, the network administrators can deploy 802.1X-based authentication systems over WMNs without additional configurations on-site. 2) Local authentication method makes the system deployable in times of natural disasters, in particular when the upper network is unavailable or some authentication servers or proxies are down. In the local authentication method, users and APs can be authenticated at the WMN by locally verifying the digital certificates as the authentication credentials.

The privacy of users' data has become a big issue for cloud service. This research focuses on image cloud database and the function of similarity search. To enhance security for such database, we propose a framework of privacy-enhanced search scheme, while all the images in the database are encrypted, and similarity image search is still supported.

Scene character recognition has been intensively investigated for a couple of decades because it has a great potential in many applications including automatic translation, signboard recognition, and reading assistance for the visually-impaired. However, scene characters are difficult to recognize at sufficient accuracy owing to various noise and image distortions. In addition, Japanese scene character recognition is more challenging and requires a large amount of character data for training because thousands of character classes exist in the language. Some researchers proposed training data augmentation techniques using Synthetic Scene Character Data (SSCD) to compensate for the shortage of training data. In this paper, we propose a Random Filter which is a new method for SSCD generation, and introduce an ensemble scheme with the Random Image Feature (RI-Feature) method. Since there has not been a large Japanese scene character dataset for the evaluation of the recognition systems, we have developed an open dataset JPSC1400, which consists of a large number of real Japanese scene characters. It is shown that the accuracy has been improved from 70.9% to 83.1% by introducing the RI-Feature method to the ensemble scheme.
