In 3GPP (3-rd Generation Partnership Project) LTE (Long Term Evolution) system, the use of PRS (Positioning Reference Signal) for OTDOA (Observed Time Difference of Arrival) based positioning method has been agreed. However, PRSs can be overlapped at the receiver side in synchronous network because the frequency shift pattern of PRS is decided by cell ID (Identity). Moreover, in asynchronous network, the loss of orthogonality between received PRSs generates continuous interferences. Even though autonomous muting can be applied to solve the interference problems in synchronous and asynchronous networks, the muting scheme degrades the overall positioning efficiency and requires additional network complexity. Therefore, in this paper, we propose novel OTDOA based positioning methods at the receiver side to improve positioning efficiency: cancellation method of serving PRS for synchronous network, TDORS (Time Domain Orthogonal Reference Signal) generation and useful CIR (Channel Impulse Response) selection methods for asynchronous network. We verified that the proposed methods can achieve an accurate estimation and stable operation without PRS muting.

To mitigate the asynchronous ICI (Inter-Cell Interference), SCM (Spatial Covariance Matrix) of the asynchronous ICI plus background noise should be accurately estimated for MIMO-OFDMA (Multiple-input Multiple-output-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) system. Generally, it is assumed that the SCM of the asynchronous ICI plus background noise is estimated by using training symbols. However, it is difficult to measure the interference statistics for a long time and considering that training symbols are not appropriate for OFDMA system such as LTE (3GPP Long Term Evolution). Therefore, noise reduction method is required to improve the estimation accuracy. Although the conventional time-domain low-pass type weighting method can be effective for noise reduction, it causes significant estimation error due to the spectral leakage in practical OFDM system. Therefore, we propose a time-domain sinc type weighing method which can not only reduce noise effectively minimizing estimation error caused by the spectral leakage but also can be implemented using frequency-domain weighted moving average filter easily. We also consider the iterative CFR (Channel Frequency Response) and SCM estimation method which can effectively reduce the estimation error of both CFR and SCM, and improve the performance for LTE system. By using computer simulation, we show that the proposed method can provide up to 2.5 dB SIR (Signal to Interference Ratio) gain compared with the conventional method, and verify that the proposed method is attractive and suitable for implementation with stable operation.

In this paper, we propose an AGC (Automatic Gain Control) algorithm for initial cell search in 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) LTE (Long Term Evolution) TDD (Time Division Duplex) system. Since the received signal has a large signal power difference between uplink and downlink subframe in wireless communication systems using a TDD scheme, conventional AGC scheme cannot sufficiently adjust the AGC gain because the AGC gain cannot converge fast enough to properly respond. Therefore, conventional AGC scheme leads to increased AGC gain variation, and the received signal will be attenuated by large AGC gain variation. To overcome this limitation, we propose an AGC scheme based on the average amplitude ratio calculation which can not only effectively increase convergence speed of the AGC gain but also maintain the stability of AGC operation in LTE TDD system. Also, it is important for AGC to converge efficiently for the accurate radio frame timing detection during the subsequent initial cell search procedure. Therefore, we also consider the proposed AGC scheme in combination with PSS (Primary Synchronization Signal) detection interface for the first step of initial cell search process in LTE TDD system to obtain both a stable AGC operation and accurate PSS detection performance. By extensive computer simulation in the presence of frequency offset and various channel environments, we verified that the proposed method can obtain a good behavior in terms of demodulation and PSS detection performance in LTE TDD system.

In LTE (Long Term Evolution)-Advanced system, a transparent MU-MIMO (Multi-User Multiple-Input Multiple Output) scheduling is basically considered, so the performance degradation in channel estimation may occur due to the unpredictable interference from co-scheduled layers. In order to detect and mitigate the interference, traditional binary hypothesis testing based interference detection method and iterative channel estimation method can be applied. However, there are two major problems. First, the binary hypothesis testing based interference detection is not suitable solution for LTE-Advanced system which has four dynamically changing interference hypotheses. Second, the conventional iterative operation does not guarantee sufficient performance gain with limited iteration time due to the estimation error in initial estimation stage. To overcome these problems, we introduce an enhanced iterative channel estimation method which considers simple matrix operation-based partial interference estimation. Based on the outcomes of the partial interference estimation, we can not only detect interference layers individually, but also partially eliminate the interference in initial channel estimation stage. Consequently, the proposed method can effectively mitigate the interference adaptively to the dynamically changing interference condition.
