  • Estimation of Short Range Multiple Coherent Source Location by Using MUSIC Algorithm

    An estimation method of source location of undesired electromagnetic wave from electronic devices by using the MUSIC algorithm is proposed. The MUSIC algorithm can estimate the direction of arrival accurately, however, the estimation error is large in the case of short range multiple coherent sources. In order to overcome this problem, a method to improve the estimation accuracy is presented. Experimental results show that the proposed method can reduce the maximum estimation error from 7 cm of the conventional method to 2 cm.

    An experimental study on propagation characteristics in a room of a modern office building using a 57.5 GHz carrier is described. The objective of the study is to provide initial information about the path-loss and fading characteristics for millimeter-wave wireless indoor communication systems. The area of the floor of the room is about 90 m2 and the room was almost empty with no furniture except the experimental apparatus. A wide-beam scalar feed horn transmission antenna and an omnidirectional receiving antenna were used and set to be with the same height. The measured area was divided into many "squares" to characterize the propagation. The variation of square transmission loss was calculated, and the regions where the maximum square transmission loss was observed were pointed out. It became clear that the distance power law for square transmission loss was approximately of the order d-2 along the direct path. Rician distributions for fast fading were derived in almost all squares of this room. The spectra for the fast fading envelope were also derived. From the propagation point of view, the results show that no extreme difficulty seems to exist in developing wireless communication systems in the 60 GHz band.

  • A Dynamic TDMA Wireless Integrated Voice/Data System with Data Steal into Voice (DSV) Technique

    This paper deals with the method of integration of voice and data in wireless communication systems. By applying the DSV (Data Steal into Voice) technique to D-TDMA (Dynamic Time Division Multiple Access) systems, this paper presents an MAC (Media Access Control) method of integration of voice and data for the systems such as cellular radios and cordless phones. After a brief review of the D-TDMA scheme and the DSV technique, the protocol called D-TDMA/DSV is described. Then, a static analysis to derive the channel capacity and a dynamic analysis to evaluate the throughput and delay performance are presented. An extension of TFA (Transient Fluid Approximation) analysis is employed in the dynamic analysis. With the same system parameters, the capacity of D-TDMA/DSV is compared with that of the traditional D-TDMA. Under the limitation of the blocking probability required for cellular radios, some numerical examples of dynamic analysis are given to show the throughput and delay performance of the system.

    A compensation method of the array element pattern is proposed to measure EM field distribution on an observation plane located several wavelengths away from electronic devices in a short time. Numerical and experimental data of the 3 and 5 element collinear dipole array sensors are presented to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.

  • Reconstruction of Printed Image Using Electromagnetic Disturbance from Laser Printer

    The electromagnetic disturbance that leaks from ICT (information and communications technology) equipment might contain important information. Our measurements show that the information hidden inside of the electromagnetic disturbance can be monitored. First, we measured the level of the electromagnetic disturbance that leaks from laser printers and collected the waveform in the time domain. Then, we reconstructed the printed image from the data. As a result of our measurements, we found that at points 200 cm away or beyond it is difficult to reconstruct the printed image, and therefore the threat to electromagnetic security is not significant.

    A visualization method of coherent source locations based on the Sampled Pattern Matching (SPM) method is described. Modified SPM method is proposed to improve the S/N, in which the measurement of the electric field distribution is repeated in appropriate time duration and eigenvalue decomposition of the covariance matrix is introduced. A combination of the modified SPM method with the Weighted Subspace Fitting (WSF) method is also proposed to estimate accurate source locations. A calibration technique by using a reference antenna to compensate the complex pattern of the receiving antenna is proposed. Experimental investigation to estimate source location for one dipole antenna and two dipole antennas is also made to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.
