New boundary integral equations are proposed for two-port slab waveguides which satisfy single mode condition. The boundary integral equations are combined with the orthogonality of guided mode and non-guided field. They are solved by the standard boundary element method with no use of mode expansion technique. Reflection and transmission coefficients of guided mode are directly determined by the boundary element method. To validate the proposed method, step waveguides for TE wave incidence and triangular rib waveguides for TM wave incidence are investigated by numerical calculations.

Evaluation of addition coefficients introduced by the addition theorems for vector spherical harmonics is one of the most intractable problems in electromagnetic scattering by multi-sphere systems. The derivation of the analytical expressions for the addition coefficients is lengthy and complex while the computation of the addition coefficients is annoyingly time-consuming even with the reasonably fast computers available nowadays. This paper presents an efficient algorithm for calculating addition coefficients which is based on the recursive relations of scalar addition coefficients. Numerical results from the formulation derived in this paper agree with those of previous published results but the algorithm proposed here reduces the computational time considerably. This paper also discusses the strengths and limitations of other formulations and numerical techniques found in the literature.

The problem of genetic algorithm's efficiency has been attracting the attention of genetic algorithm community. Over the last decade, considerable researches have focused on improving genetic algorithm's performance. However, they are generally under the framework of natural evolutionary mechanism and the major genetic operators, crossover and mutation, are activated by the prior probabilities. An operator based on a prior probability possesses randomness, that is, the unexpected individuals are frequently operated, but the expected individuals are sometimes not operated. Moreover, as the evaluation function is the link between the genetic algorithm and the problem to be solved, the evaluation function provides the heuristic information for evolutionary search. Therefore, how to use this kind of heuristic information (present and past) is influential in the efficiency of evolutionary search. This paper, as an attempt, presents a eugenics-based genetic algorithm (EGA) -- a genetic algorithm that reflects the human's decision will (eugenics), and fully utilizes the heuristic information provided by the evaluation function for the decisions. In other words, EGA = evolutionary mechanisms + human's decision will + heuristic information. In EGA, the ideas of the positive eugenics and the negative eugenics are applied as the principle of selections and the selections are not activated by the prior probabilities but by the evaluation values of individuals. A method of genealogical chain-based selection for mutation is proposed, which avoids the blindness of stochastic mutation and the disruptive problem of mutation. A control strategy of reasonable competitions is proposed, which brings the effects of crossover and mutation into full play. Three examples, the minimum problem of a standard optimizing function--De Jong's test function F2, a typical combinatorial optimization problem--the traveling salesman problem, and a problem of identifying nonlinear system, are given to show the good performance of EGA.

The availability of more and more Web services provides great varieties for users to design service processes. However, there are situations that services or service processes cannot meet users' requirements in functional QoS dimensions (e.g., translation quality in a machine translation service). In those cases, composing Web services and human tasks is expected to be a possible alternative solution. However, analysis of such practical efforts were rarely reported in previous researches, most of which focus on the technology of embedding human tasks in software environments. Therefore, this study aims at analyzing the effects of composing Web services and human activities using a case study in the domain of language service with large scale experiments. From the experiments and analysis, we find out that (1) service implementation variety can be greatly increased by composing Web services and human activities for satisfying users' QoS requirements; (2) functional QoS of a Web service can be significantly improved by inducing human activities with limited cost and execution time provided certain quality of human activities; and (3) multiple QoS attributes of a composite service are affected in different ways with different quality of human activities.

Volume integral equations combined with orthogonality of guided mode and non-guided field are proposed for the TE incidence of two-dimensional optical slab waveguide. The slab waveguide is assumed to satisfy the single mode condition. The formulation of the integral equations are described in detail. The matrix equation obtained by applying the method of moments to the integral equations is shown. Numerical results for step, gap, and grating waveguides are given. They are compared to published papers to validate the proposed method.

We show examples of accurate computer-aided design of power coupling between two dielectric slab waveguides of finite length by using the boundary-element method (BEM) based on guided-mode extracted integral equations (GMEIE's). The integral equations derived in this paper can be solved by the conventional BEM. Various properties in numerical calculations of GMEIE's are examined. The reflection and coupling coefficients of the guided wave as well as the scattering power are calculated numerically for the case of incidence TM guided-mode. The presented results are checked by the energy conservation law and reciprocity theorem. The results show that it is possible to design an optimum coupling between two dielectric slab waveguides by using the BEM based on GMEIE's.

Optical near-field distributions of planar dielectric and metallic objects placed on a large dielectric substrate plate have been calculated by the volume integral equation using an iterative method called generalized minimal residual method with the fast Fourier transform technique. The basic characteristics of the near-field have been investigated in detail for large and small objects, dielectric and metallic objects and incident p-polarized and s-polarized evanescent fields.

This paper presents the method of moments based on electric field integral equation which is capable of solving three-dimensional metallic waveguide problem with no use of another method. Metals are treated as perfectly electric conductor. The integral equation is derived in detail. In order to validate the proposed method, the numerical results are compared with those in a published paper. Three types of waveguide are considered: step discontinuity waveguide, symmetrical resonant iris waveguide, and unsymmetrical resonant iris waveguide. The numerical results are also verified by the law of conservation of energy.
