Polymer multimode optical waveguides were fabricated from optically-sensitive hybrid silicone using the ultraviolet laser drawing method. The waveguide loss values were measured as 0.069 dB/cm with a laser diode, 0.069 dB/cm with a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser, and 0.128 dB/cm with a light-emitting diode. The cross waveguide on a curved waveguide was drawn by overlapped direct laser drawing. The crosstalk and excess loss at the cross angle of 50 in the cross waveguide were measured as 47 dB and 0.5 dB, respectively.

A low-loss and high-crosstalk-attenuation two-channel optical multi/demultiplexer for single-mode fiber systems is fabricated. This device is composed of new waveguides compatible with optical fibers (WCF) and interference filters. The waveguides are fabricated by the same method as used for optical fibers. The device has a low insertion loss of less than 2.3 dB, and high far-end and near-end crosstalk attenuations of over 54 dB and 68 dB. Coupling loss between the device and single-mode fibers is measured at less than 0.12 dB. Polarization dependence is not observed in the device.

Optical characteristics of the Bragg filter fabricated with a Ta2O5/SiO2 optical waveguide are studied. The Bragg reflector was formed by the holographic method using an He-Cd laser. Filter responses were measured with the color-center laser and the stopband bandwidth was found to be 3.5 Å.
