  • Asynchronous Cache Invalidation Strategy to Support Read-Only Transaction in Mobile Environments

    The stateless-based cache invalidation schemes for wireless environments can be categorized into either asynchronous or synchronous cache invalidation according to the broadcasting way of invalidation report. However, if the asynchronous cache invalidation scheme attempts to support local processing of read-only transaction, a critical problem may occur; the asynchronous invalidation reports provide no guarantee of waiting time for mobile transactions requesting commit. To solve this problem, the server in our approaches broadcasts two kind of messages, asynchronous invalidation report to reduce transaction latency and periodic guide message to avoid the uncertainty of waiting time for the next invalidation report. This paper presents a simulation-based analysis on the performance of the suggesting algorithms. The simulation experiments show that the local processing algorithms of read-only transaction based on asynchronous cache invalidation scheme get better response time than the algorithm based on synchronous cache invalidation scheme.

  • A New Fast Image Retrieval Using the Condensed Two-Stage Search Method

    In a content-based image retrieval (CBIR) system, both the retrieval relevance and the response time are very important. This letter presents the condensed two-stage search method as a new fast image retrieval approach by making use of the property of Cauchy-Schwarz inequality. The method successfully reduces the overall processing time for similarity computation, while maintaining the same retrieval relevance as the conventional exhaustive search method. By the extensive computer simulations, we observe that the condensed two-stage search method is more effective as the number of images and dimensions of the feature space increase.

  • Subcarrier Block Power Control for Adaptive Downlink OFDM with Frequency Spreading and Equalization

    In this letter, we propose the transmit power controlled adaptive downlink frequency symbol spreading OFDM (TPC-AMS/FSS-OFDM) system. In the TPC-AMS/FSS-OFDM, each S/P transformed signal is spread by orthogonal spreading codes and combined in the transmitter, so the detected signals obtain the same SINR for each frequency symbol spreading block in the receiver. In this case, we can assign the same modulation level and transmit power for each frequency symbol spreading block for next transmission. Thus, the proposed system not only increases throughput performance but also reduces the total transmit power, FBI and MLI.

  • An Optimistic Cache Consistency Protocol Using Preemptive Approach

    In Optimistic Two-Phase Locking (O2PL), when a transaction requests a commit, the transaction can not be committed until all requested locks are obtained. By this reason, O2PL leads to unnecessary waits and operations even though it adopts an optimistic approach. This paper suggests an efficient optimistic cache consistency protocol that provides serializability of committed transactions. Our cache consistency scheme, called PCP (Preemptive Cache Protocol), decides whether to commit or abort without waiting when transactions request commits. In PCP, some transactions that read stale data items can not be aborted, because it adopts a re-ordering scheme to enhance the performance. In addition, for re-ordering, PCP stores only one version of each data item. This paper presents a simulation-based analysis on the performance of PCP with other protocols such as O2PL, Optimistic Concurrency Control and Caching Two-Phase Locking. The simulation experiments show that PCP performs as well as or better than other schemes with low overhead.
