Predicting the service performance of Internet applications is important in service selection, especially for video services. In order to design a predictor for forecasting video service performance in third-party application, two famous service providers in China, Iqiyi and Letv, are monitored and analyzed. The study highlights that the measured performance in the observation period is time-series data, and it has strong autocorrelation, which means it is predictable. In order to combine the temporal information and map the measured data to a proper feature space, the authors propose a predictor based on a Conditional Restricted Boltzmann Machine (CRBM), which can capture the potential temporal relationship of the historical information. Meanwhile, the measured data of different sources are combined to enhance the training process, which can enlarge the training size and avoid the over-fit problem. Experiments show that combining the measured results from different resolutions for a video can raise prediction performance, and the CRBM algorithm shows better prediction ability and more stable performance than the baseline algorithms.

A conical area evolutionary algorithm (CAEA) is presented to further improve computational efficiencies of evolutionary algorithms for bi-objective optimization. CAEA partitions the objective space into a number of conical subregions and then solves a scalar subproblem in each subregion that uses a conical area indicator as its scalar objective. The local Pareto optimality of the solution with the minimal conical area in each subregion is proved. Experimental results on bi-objective problems have shown that CAEA offers a significantly higher computational efficiency than the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition (MOEA/D) while CAEA competes well with MOEA/D in terms of solution quality.

Smart-routers develop greatly in recent years as one of the representative products of IoT and Smart home. Different from traditional routers, they have storage and processing capacity. Actually, smart-routers in the same location or ISP have better link conditions and can provide high quality service to each other. Therefore, for the content required services, how to construct the overlay network and efficiently deploy replications of popular content in smart-routers' network are critical. The performance of existing centralized models is limited by the bottleneck of the single point's performance. In order to improve the stability and scalability of the system through the capability of smart-router, we propose a novel intelligent and decentralized content diffusion system in smart-router network. In the system, the content will be quickly and autonomously diffused in the network which follows the specific requirement of coverage rate in neighbors. Furthermore, we design a heuristic node selection algorithm (MIG) and a replacement algorithm (MCL) to assist the diffusion of content. Specifically, system based MIG will select neighbor with the maximum value of information gain to cache the replication. The replication with the least loss of the coverage rate gain will be replaced in the system based on MCL. Through the simulation experiments, at the same requirement of coverage rate, MIG can reduce the number of replications by at least 20.2% compared with other algorithms. Compared with other replacement algorithms, MCL achieves the best successful service rate which means how much ratio of the service can be provided by neighbors. The system based on the MIG and MCL can provide stable service with the lowest bandwidth and storage cost.

The research reported in this paper is an attempt to elucidate the predictors of pause duration in read-aloud discourse. Through simple linear regression analysis and stepwise multiple linear regression, we examined how different factors (namely, syntactic structure, discourse hierarchy, topic structure, preboundary length, and postboundary length) influenced pause duration both separately and jointly. Results from simple regression analysis showed that discourse hierarchy, syntactic structure, topic structure, and postboundary length had significant impacts on boundary pause duration. However, when these factors were tested in a stepwise regression analysis, only discourse hierarchy, syntactic structure, and postboundary length were found to have significant impacts on boundary pause duration. The regression model that best predicted boundary pause duration in discourse context was the one that first included syntactic structure, and then included discourse hierarchy and postboundary length. This model could account for about 80% of the variance of pause duration. Tests of mediation models showed that the effects of topic structure and discourse hierarchy were significantly mediated by syntactic structure, which was most closely correlated with pause duration. These results support an integrated model combining the influence of several factors and can be applied to text-to-speech systems.

The conical area evolutionary algorithm (CAEA) has a very high run-time efficiency for bi-objective optimization, but it can not tackle problems with more than two objectives. In this letter, a conical hypervolume evolutionary algorithm (CHEA) is proposed to extend the CAEA to a higher dimensional objective space. CHEA partitions objective spaces into a series of conical subregions and retains only one elitist individual for every subregion within a compact elitist archive. Additionally, each offspring needs to be compared only with the elitist individual in the same subregion in terms of the local hypervolume scalar indicator. Experimental results on 5-objective test problems have revealed that CHEA can obtain the satisfactory overall performance on both run-time efficiency and solution quality.

A partitioning parallelization of the multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition, pMOEA/D, is proposed in this letter to achieve significant time reductions for expensive bi-objective optimization problems (BOPs) on message-passing clusters. Each sub-population of pMOEA/D resides on a separate processor in a cluster and consists of a non-overlapping partition and some extra overlapping individuals for updating neighbors. Additionally, sub-populations cooperate across separate processors by the hybrid migration of elitist individuals and utopian points. Experimental results on two benchmark BOPs and the wireless sensor network layout problem indicate that pMOEA/D achieves satisfactory performance in terms of speedup and quality of solutions on message-passing clusters.

The rendering mechanism plays an indispensable role in browser-based Web application. It generates active webpages dynamically and provides human-readable layout through template engines, which are used as a standard programming model to separate the business logic and data computations from the webpage presentation. The client-side rendering mechanism, owing to the advances of rich application technologies, has been widely adopted. The adoption of client side rendering brings not only various merits but also new problems. In this paper, we propose and construct “pagelet”, a segment-based template engine for developing flexible and extensible Web applications. By presenting principles, practice and usage experience of pagelet, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of possible advantages and disadvantages brought by client-side rendering mechanism from the viewpoints of both developers and end-users.

This paper proposes a component ranking method to identify important components which have great impact on the system reliability. This method, which is opposite to an existing method, believes components which frequently invoke other components have more impact than others and employs component invocation structures and invocation frequencies for making important component ranking. It can strongly support for improving the reliability of software systems, especially large-scale systems. Extensive experiments are provided to validate this method and draw performance comparison.
