It is shown that five optimal and one quasioptimal binary codes with respect to the Griesmer bound can be obtained from cyclic codes over GF(2fm). An [m(2em - 1), em, 2em-1m] code, a [3(22e - 1), 2e, 3

This letter proposes a new retransmission control scheme for slow-frequency-hopped communication systems, in which the number of (re)transmitted packets is adaptively decreased in a certain period. Performance of the proposed scheme is analyzed and compared with that of the conventional scheme in terms of the normalized throughput and the 98% packet transmission delay. The numerical results show the superiority of the proposed scheme.

The stability of slotted ALOHA systems with various types of capture phenomena and multiple packet reception capability is discussed in conjunction with the cusp catastrophe. The slotted ALOHA systems considered are classified into; 1) single packet reception with geometric capture, 2) independent multiple packet reception with geometric capture, 3) single packet reception with M-out-of-N capture (M N), 4) multiple packet reception with M-out-of-N capture, and 5) single packet reception with perfect capture. First, general expressions for the cusp points and the bifurcation sets are derived. Then, we present explicit formula for the stability of slotted ALOHA systems for the five types of capture and multi-packet reception capability and demonstrate how the bistable behavior is mitigated due to capture effect and multi-packet reception capability.

An algorithm for finding the unequal error protection (UEP) capability of a q-ary image of a low-rate qm-ary cyclic code is presented by combining its concatenated structure with the UEP capability of concatenated codes. The results are independent of a choice of a basis to be used for expanding an element over GF (qm) into GF (q). A table of the UEP capability of binary images of low-rate Reed-Solomon codes over GF (26) is given. It is shown that the encoding and decoding algorithms for superimposed concatenated codes can be applied to a q-ary image as a linear UEP code.

We prove that binary images of irreducible cyclic codes C over GF(2m) and binary concatenated codes of C and a binary [m+1,m,2] even-parity code are optimal (in the sense that they meet the Griesmer bound with equality) and proper, if a root of the check polynomial of C is primitive over GF(2m) or its extensions.
