  • Development of the Flexible and General IP Evaluation Tool STAGE

    Recently, because of the expansion of TCP/IP networks, the evaluation of IP networks is being considered as a major task for network operators and administrators. As a result, many IP evaluation tools have appeared, but almost all of them can only be applied to a limited purpose. The authors have already developed an IP evaluation tool, called KITS (KDD Internet Test System) that can generate flexible load traffic. Based on KITS, the authors have now developed a new IP measurement tool. This paper describes the flexible and general IP evaluation tool, STAGE (Simulated Traffic Analyzer/generator for General Evaluation).

  • A Traffic Measurement Tool for IP-Based Networks

    Today, many kinds of real-time applications are available over IP networks. It is important to measure the network performance for such applications before making use of real applications. Authors developed the general purpose traffic measurement tool for IP networks. This system can generate any kinds of traffic flexibly and calculate the network performance such as throughput, delay and loss ratio according to received packets. In this paper, the concept of this traffic measurement tool is described in detail, and several examples of network measurements are shown.

  • Evaluation of Subjective Communication Quality of Optical Mobile Communication Systems by Mean Opinion Score

    Since mobile communication systems using optical rays (optical mobile communication systems) do not radiate radio waves from the mobile terminals, they are expected to be used in environments containing sensitive electronic equipment. However, the placement and direction of the optical receivers must be suitably determined for mobile communication because light has high directivity. In optical mobile communication systems, the communication quality varies with the direction of the mobile terminal. Therefore, we examined the angle over which communication is possible at various measurement points and defined it as the communication angle. The mean opinion score (MOS) was obtained to assess the communication quality using the communication angle as a parameter. In this paper, the two situations, walking and sitting down, was considered the way optical mobile communication systems actually used. We found that for walking, when the communication angle was over 180 degrees, the MOS was over 3 and over 50% of users could communicate usefully. When used sitting down, the communication quality did not depend on the communication angle, but only on whether or not the user could communicate in the direction he/she was facing. Thus, if the communication angle in the service area is over 180 degrees, it is possible to communicate in practical situations, even while walking.

  • Boundary Element Analysis of Beam Dynamics in Streak Camera Considering Space Charge Effects

    Streak cameras are now widely used for measurements of ultra short phenomena, such as those in semi conductor luminescence and plasma gaseous discharge. To further improve the temporal resolution and carry out higher-dimensional measurements, it is necessary to understand the electron beam behavior in detail. Thus, numerical simulations play an important role in the analysis of the streak camera. The authors have been working on the development of a numerical simulation code that uses the finite difference method (FDM) for electric field analysis, the Runge-Kutta (R-K) method for charged particle motion determination, and the particle-in-cell (PIC) method for charge density calculation. However, the use of the PIC method leads to inaccuracy in the charge density calculation in cases of high-density electron beams. To improve the accuracy of the conventional analysis of the streak camera, we perform the boundary element (BE) analysis of the streak camera.

  • Tradeoff Relationship between Fidelity and Latency in Interactive Audio-Video Applications over IP Networks

    Interactive audio-video applications over IP networks have subjective tradeoffs between fidelity and latency owing to packet buffering at the receiver. Increasing the buffering time improves the fidelity, whereas it degrades the latency. This paper makes the subjective tradeoff between fidelity and latency clear in a quantitative way. In addition, we examine the effect of tasks on the subjective tradeoff. In evaluating the effect of tasks, we use two tasks according to ITU-T Recommendation P.920. An experiment was conducted to measure user-level QoS of an interactive application with the psychometric methods. We then investigate the subjective tradeoff quantitatively by QoS mapping. The experimental results confirm that there exists the buffering time which makes user-level QoS the highest. The results also show that the optimum buffering time depends on the kind of task.

  • Rate-Adaptive Real-Time Multicast TV Conference System with Locally Adaptive Packet Flow Control

    As TCP/IP networks develop, various type of applications or services are appearing. Especially, many people want to use real time multicast applications over TCP/IP networks like a TV conference system. Most of the current TCP/IP networks, however, still do not support QoS guarantees using RSVP, so that they provide only a best-effort service. Therefore, such real time applications must control data transmitting rate by the network or receiver's condition. However, it is difficult to control data rate over a multicast session, since every receiver on a multicast network does not necessarily have the same environment. To solve this problem, the authors proposed a locally adaptive control intermediate system. This paper describes a rate-adaptive real-time multicast system with locally adaptive packet flow control.
