The pulsed HF chemical laser of the HI/SF6 system can be excited to the sixth HF vibrational level, and the spectra of this system coincide with those of the HF chemical laser of the H2/F2 system. The pulsed HF chemical laser of the HI/SF6 system can therefore be used as an oscillator or a preamplifier for the power-amplifier of the H2/F2 system. The power of a pulsed HF chemical laser of the HI/SF6 system is said to be poor in comparison with other mixed systems, but the use of a Blumlein-discharge circuit to initiate the electric discharge proved to be effective. An electrical efficiency of 3.9% for a pulsed HF chemical laser of the HI/SF6 system was obtained, and both the electrical efficiency and the output energy of this laser system were comparable with those of the HI/SF6 system.
The propagation characteristics of nonlinear TE waves guided by dielectric optical waveguides which consist of media with intensity-dependent refractive-index are investigated. Numerical results for guiding property of nonlinear waves are presented.

The propagation characteristics of nonlinear TE waves guided by planar optical waveguide whose guiding region has arbitrary inhomogeneous refractive-index profile are investigated theoretically by using the WKB method. The effects of inhomogeneous index profile of a guided region on the propagation characteristics such as the propagation constant and the field distribution are estimated numerically.

We often use data flow diagrams or state transition diagrams to design software systems with concurrency. We call those diagrams as nets in this paper. Semantics of any methods to describe such software systems should be defined in some formal ways. There would be no doubts that any nets should be supported by appropriate theoretical frameworks. In this paper, we use CCS as a typical algebraic approach of using formulas to express concurrent behaviors and point out the different features of CCS from Petri nets. Any approaches should be not only theoretically beautiful but also practically useful. We use a specification language LOTOS as such example which has two features, CCS and ADT, and is designed to specify practical communication protocols. Algebraic approaches of using formulas, like LOTOS, can be considered as a compact way to express concurrent behaviors. We explore our discussions of net-oriented approaches into UIMS research fields. After mentioning state transition models of UIMS, we exemplify a practically used example, VIA-UIMS, which has been developed by one of authors. VIA-UIMS employs a net-oriented architecture. It has been designed to reconstuct tools which have already been widely used in many sites.
A pulsed HF chemical laser of the HI/SF6 system can be used as an oscillator or a preamplifier for the laser power-amplifier system of the H2/F2 system. The HF chemical laser of the HI/SF6 system is predicted to extract more energy than the other mixed systems, but the results of calculations based on a simulation model were not in agreement with experiment. In this paper, our calculation was based on the assumption that the HI molecules dissociated upon the initiation. The pulsed HF chemical laser of the HI/SF6 system is here treated theoretically, utilizing the constant-gain methode by a pulsed chemical laser code. The pulsed HF chemical laser is characterized by the laser output energy, power and pulse width. The calculated results in accordance with the assumption that 1% of SF6 and 25% of HI are dissociated by the electric discharge, are in good agreement with the experimental data for a pulsed HF chemical laser of the HI/SF6 system with the Blumlein-discharge circuit.

So far, a lot of analyses have been performed on the edge-guide mode isolator with one short edge. However, the detailed characteristics such as the influence of shape of a metal strip and the thickness of a ferrite substrate have not been revealed. This paper clarifies the influence of the structure on the frequency response both experimentally and numerically. The numerical analysis is performed by the FDTD method. The numerical results indicate that the frequency response does not depend on the thickness of ferrite substrate but does on the shape of the metal strip. Furthermore, based on the numerical results, the experiment is carried out on the prototype isolator. All the results provide a theory of the optimum design on the isolator.

We have already proposed a process algebra µLOTOS as a mathematical framework to synthesize a process from a number of (incomplete) specifications, in which requirements for the process do not have to be completely determined. It is guaranteed that the synthesized process satisfies all the given specifications, if they are consistent. For example, µLOTOS is useful for incremental design. The advantage of µLOTOS is that liveness properties can be expressed by least fixpoints and disjunctions . In this paper, we present µLOTOSR, which is a refined µLOTOS. The improvement is that µLOTOSR has a conjunction operator . Therefore, the consistency between a number of specifications S1,,S2 can be checked by the satisfiability of the conjunction specification S1 S2. µLOTOSR does not need the complex consistency check used in µLOTOS.

This paper presents a novel method for robust object tracking in video sequences using a hybrid feature-based observation model in a particle filtering framework. An ideal observation model should have both high ability to accurately distinguish objects from the background and high reliability to identify the detected objects. Traditional features are better at solving the former problem but weak in solving the latter one. To overcome that, we adopt a robust and dynamic feature called Grayscale Arranging Pairs (GAP), which has high discriminative ability even under conditions of severe illumination variation and dynamic background elements. Together with the GAP feature, we also adopt the color histogram feature in order to take advantage of traditional features in resolving the first problem. At the same time, an efficient and simple integration method is used to combine the GAP feature with color information. Comparative experiments demonstrate that object tracking with our integrated features performs well even when objects go across complex backgrounds.

The percentage of pedestrian deaths in traffic accidents is on the rise in Japan. In recent years, there have been calls for measures to be introduced to protect vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists. In this study, a method to detect and track pedestrians using an in-vehicle camera is presented. We improve the technology of detecting pedestrians by using the highly accurate images obtained with a monocular camera. In the detection step, we employ ECoHOG as the feature descriptor; it accumulates the integrated gradient intensities. In the tracking step, we apply an effective motion model using optical flow and the proposed feature descriptor ECoHOG in a tracking-by-detection framework. These techniques were verified using images captured on real roads.
