This paper presents the analysis of integrated voice and data cellular networks with channel borrowing. Our considered system gives higher priority to handoff calls over new calls from users' point of view and reflects each characteristics of voice and data traffic types. Data handoff calls can wait in a queue while they are in handoff areas if there are no channels available. Voice handoff calls can borrow at most l channels from data calls if there are no idle channels upon their arrivals. We mathematically model this system by applying queueing theory. Then, we analyze its performance to derive the forced termination probability of data handoff calls, the blocking probabilities of the new and handoff calls of voice and data, and the Laplace Stieltjes transform for the distribution of waiting time in a queue. In numerical results, the analytical results for the mean waiting time of data handoff calls are compared with the simulation results to validate our analytical approach. Our system is also compared with the system where channel borrowing cannot be allowed (nonborrowing system) with respect to the blocking probabilities of the new and handoff calls of voice and data, the forced termination probability of data handoff calls, the mean and the coefficient of variation of the waiting time of data handoff calls.

The project of interconnecting CATV in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan has started since March, 1998. In this project, there are three CATV companies in Hanshin area; Kobe, Nishinomiya and Amagasaki. An ATM switch is equipped in each company and these CATVs are connected serially in the above order. Each company provides the video service to the rest of companies using the MPEG2 over ATM. Each MPEG2 stream is sent to the other two CATV companies according to the function of multicast implemented in ATM switch. In the coverage of each CATV, subscribers utilize Internet connection using cable modems as well as standard CATV broadcasting service. In this paper, we present the outline of the research project in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, and examine the jitter processes of MPEG streams of the testbed network by the simulation. In our testbed network, cells with two types of requirement for QoS are multiplexed; cells for MPEG2 which require the real-time transmission and those for Internet packets which are much more sensitive for the cell loss ratio. We investigate the jitter processes under some scenarios and show how the jitter process is affected by the Internet traffic and the other cell streams of MPEG2. Furthermore, we study the effect of the number of ATM switches on the jitter process when more CATV networks are added serially.

Hybrid FEC/ARQ, which is a mixture of forward error correction (FEC) and automatic repeat request (ARQ), is a well-known technique aiming for packet-loss recovery to guarantee quality of service (QoS) for real-time communications. In this paper, focusing on layered video transmission over wireless network environment, we propose a proactive retransmission scheme for hybrid FEC/ARQ. In the proposed scheme, a receiver host periodically sends probe packets to a sender host in order to check wireless channel state. If the sender host does not receive any probe packet during a pre-specified interval, it regards the wireless channel as being in burst loss state, and it proactively retransmits packets expected to be lost during the burst loss period. The buffer management associated with layered video coding is also taken into consideration. The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated by simulation. Numerical examples show that the proposed scheme transmits packets of the base layer more successfully than the conventional FEC/ARQ.

The ATM-ABR service category provides minimum cell rate (MCR) guarantees and robust connections even with insufficient network resources. Recently proposed rate-management algorithms for supporting multimedia applications over ABR mainly aim at minimizing the cell loss and delay. However, jitter is also an important element of QoS for multimedia applications. In this paper, we focus our attention on the arrival point of the critical cell corresponding to the end of data packet and propose a simple cell scheduling scheme for source node to reduce the jitter on application level over the ATM-ABR service class. In our proposed method, critical cells are delayed intentionally and the packet stream at application level becomes smooth. We verify the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm by an analytical model and simulation. From those results, we find that our proposed scheduling algorithm is effective in reducing the application level jitter even when the tagged cell stream is transmitted along the path with multiple nodes.

We present both numerical and approximate calculations to estimate the total harmonic distortion of demodulated signal from the PLL which has an excess phase shift or some time delay in the loop. Values by the two calculation methods are in agreement with results of the appropriate experiment.

This paper presents a rough sets-based method for clustering nominal and numerical data. This clustering result is independent of a sequence of handling object because this method lies its basis on a concept of classification of objects. This method defines knowledge as sets that contain similar or dissimilar objects to every object. A number of knowledge are defined for a data set. Combining similar knowledge yields a new set of knowledge as a clustering result. Cluster validity selects the best result from various sets of combined knowledge. In experiments, this method was applied to nominal databases and numerical databases. The results showed that this method could produce good clustering results for both types of data. Moreover, ambiguity of a boundary of clusters is defined using roughness of the clustering result.

In this paper, we consider the transmission needs of communication networks for two classes of secondary users (SUs), named SU1 and SU2 (lowest priority) in cognitive radio networks (CRNs). In such CRNs, primary users (PUs) have preemptive priority over both SU1's users (SU1s) and SU2's users (SU2s). We propose a preemptive scheme (referred to as the P Scheme) and a non-preemptive scheme (referred to as the Non-P Scheme) when considering the interactions between SU1s and SU2s. Focusing on the transmission interruptions to SU2 packets, we present a probabilistic returning scheme with a returning probability to realize feedback control for SU2 packets. We present a Markov chain model to develop some formulas for SU1 and SU2 packets, and compare the influences of the P Scheme and the Non-P Scheme in the proposed probabilistic returning scheme. Numerical analyses compare the impact of the returning probability on the P Scheme and the Non-P Scheme. Furthermore, we optimize the returning probability and compare the optimal numerical results yielded by the P Scheme and the Non-P Scheme.

A regulation model of the platelet count was proposed. All the characteristics of the components of the model in the normal state were determined from clinical and experimental results using numerical simulation procedure. Platelet counts of a subject with cyclical thrombocytopenia, measured over a period of 244 days, revealed that the maximum platelet count was 890,000/µl and the minimum count was less than 1000/µl. In addition, nine platelet survival curves were measured within the same period. Analyzing the 9 platelet survival curves, one of the factors causing cyclical thrombocytopenia appeared to be the periodic elevation of the platelet destruction rate. From simulations done under condition that the destruction rate varied cyclically, it was found that the variation rate of peak value of platelet counts was affected by four major parameters of the model. The average daily destruction rate during the period of measurement of survival curves was estimated in such a way that the square error between the estimated and observed curves was made small by adjusting one of the four major parameters. The second factor was found to be a slow variation of the maximum production rate of magakaryocytes (precursor cells of platelets).

In this paper, we derive the mean message waiting times in a local area network that uses the Demand-Priority Access Method. We model the system as a two-priority M/G/1 queue with switchover time between service periods. This switchover time accounts for the polling and port selection performed by the repeater after each message transmission. The service discipline is non-preemptive and the length of the switchover time is dependent upon the priority class of the preceding message served as well as that of the message to be served next. The dependency in the switchover times is motivated by the polling and port selection operation of the protocol and it makes the analysis much more involved. In order to avoid the complexities of an exact analysis, we make some independence assumptions and thus obtain an approximate solution. Laplace-Stieltjes transforms of the stationary probability distribution functions for the waiting time of high- and normal-priority messages are derived, and subsequently, the expressions for the mean message waiting times. Numerical results computed using these expressions are verified using simulations which model the actual protocol. These numerical results which are shown to be accurate can be easily computed with widely available mathematical software.
