  • Utilization-Aware Hybrid Beacon Scheduling in Cluster-Tree ZigBee Networks

    In this paper, we propose an utilization-aware hybrid beacon scheduling method for a large-scale IEEE 802.15.4 cluster-tree ZigBee network. The proposed method aims to enhance schedulability of a target network by better utilizing transmission medium, while avoiding inter-cluster collisions at the same time. To achieve this goal, the proposed scheduling method partially allows beacon overlaps, if appropriate. In particular, this paper answers for the following questions: 1) on which condition clusters can send overlapped beacons, 2) how to select clusters to overlap with minimizing utilization, and 3) how to adjust beacon parameters for grouped clusters. Also, we quantitatively evaluate the proposed method compared to previous works — i.e., non-beacon scheduling and a serialized beacon scheduling algorithm — from several aspects including total duty cycles, packet drop rate, and end-to-end delay.

  • Simple Autonomous Active Period Selection with Reuse Mechanism for Cluster-Based Traffic Adaptive WSNs under Cluster Mobility

    This paper investigates active period selection for cluster-based WSNs employing traffic adaptive IEEE 802.15.4 beacon enabled medium access control (MAC) under spatial non-uniform traffic and cluster mobility environments, and proposes a simple autonomous distributed superframe duration (SD) selection scheme to enhance network performance under such environments. The proposed scheme autonomously selects an active SD at each cluster head (CH) by using beacon reception power monitoring (conducted in distributed control manner) and also introduces a beacon status notice from sensor nodes (SNs) to their parent CHs in order to prevent unnecessary SD selection at CHs. Moreover, SD reuse mechanism and joint operation with previously proposed distributed backoff mechanism are proposed for the proposed SD selection scheme to further enhance the network performance. The results of computer simulation show that the proposed scheme can improve both the transmission and power efficiency performance of cluster-based WSNs under spatial non-uniform traffic and cluster mobility environments.

  • Energy-Efficient Flexible Beacon Scheduling Mechanism for Cluster-Tree Healthcare Systems

    An Energy-efficient Flexible Beacon Scheduling (EFBS) mechanism is proposed to solve the beacon collision problem in cluster-tree healthcare systems. In EFBS, after clustering, BAN Coordinators perform power control. Then they are divided into groups and each group is assigned one contention-free time-slot. The duration of the beacon-only period is flexible. According to the simulation results, EFBS provides better performance than other beacon scheduling approaches.
