  • Wireless Power Transfer from Space to Earth Open Access

    Microwaves have typically been used for communications and radar, but nowadays are given much attention to energy transfer applications. This paper describes microwave power transfer from a satellite to Earth that is visualized as a solar power satellite system (SPSS). After the system configuration is explained, unique engineering features are presented. Then, some contributions made by Japanese community are introduced, focusing on microwave and antenna engineering. As SPSS will handle high power levels at microwave frequency, and so components should be mass-produced to reduce the cost, then we need to shift our paradigm on the technology involved. Finally, the roadmap to a commercial SPSS is discussed.

    Optical wireless communications is a research topic of extreme interest since it offers high data rate (Gbps data rate), security, and RF interference immunity. However, optical wireless communications places severe restrictions on the communications paths; they must be direct beam connections. To increase the number of users and link robustness, optical wireless communications must be able to operate even when obstacles are placed between transmitters and receivers, so optical micro-cell (OMC) with autonomous beam control can overcome link robustness. In addition, OMC based optical wireless communication yields compact systems. This paper presents the design, an implementation, and a demonstration of a 114 Mbps autonomous beam control optical wireless communication system based on an OMC technique. The robust posture control results optimum downlink alignment and good eye diagram of data transmission.

  • Active Integrated Antenna Techniques for Beam Control

    Active integrated antenna techniques have high potential for giving smaller size, lighter weight, lower cost and higher efficiency, in particular to millimeter-wave circuit-antenna systems. This paper gives a review of active integrated antenna techniques with emphasis on beam steering and retrodirective antenna arrays. Various beam steering operations of integrated antenna oscillator arrays using locking phenomena are presented. Beam steering arrays of such type have the feature that phase shifters are not necessary in the arrays. Arrays with higher harmonic output radiation can enlarge the beam steering range. Arrays of locked active antennas which operate as self-oscillating mixers can be beam controllable receiving antennas.

  • Analysis of a Millimeter-Wave Antenna Consisting of Layered Magnetic and Dielectric Slabs with Periodic Corrugation

    In this paper the characteristics of millimeter-wave antenna composed of layered magnetic and dielectric slabs with different corrugation are described for the transverse electric mode. A corrugation of the upper magnetic layer contacts with air, and the lower surface of the dielectric slab having corrugation in matalized. The extinction coefficient clarifying the characteristics of the leakage wave is systematically derived by using the perturbation method combined with the multiple space scales. As an example the radiation efficiency becomes a value of about 89% by using the typical physical parameters in the frequency range from 52 to 54 GHz.
