  • Information Integration Architecture for Agent-Based Computer Supported Cooperative Work System

    We propose an information integration architecture for a man-machine interface to construct a new agent-based Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) system. The system acts as a clerk in cooperative work giving users the advantage of using cooperative work space. The system allows users to do their work in the style of an ordinary meeting because spontaneous expressions of speech and gestures by users are detected by sensors so that they can be integrated with a task model at several levels to create suitable responses in a man-machine interface. As a result, users can dedicate themselves to mutually understand other meeting members with no awareness of direction to the CSCW system. In this paper, we describe the whole system and its information integration architecture for the man-machine interface including, the principle of functions, the current status of the system and future directions.

  • A Computer Supported System of Meetings Using a Model of Inter-Personal Communication

    Information systems to support cooperative work among people should be first designed to help humam communication. However, there are few systems based on the analysis of human communication. Standing on this situation, we propose a meeting support system for the participants' understandings by indicating the suitable information about the topic of the scene". Our system provides only useful information by monitoring each statement without complex methods. To show something useful multi-media information for members, we propose the following structure of the meeting on the basis of the analysis of communication. Each statement is classified into two levels, either; a statement about the progress" of the meeting (context-level utterances) or, a statement about objects" (content-level utterances). Further, content-level utterances are classified into two types, position utterances and argument utterances. Using this classification of statements, the proceeding of the meeting is represented as the tree model which is called a context-tree". If the structure of meetings is fixed, it is possible to select only useful information from all shared information for members by analyzing each content-level utterance. The system introduced in this paper shows appropriate multi-media information about the topic of the scene" by using the above model. We have implemented a prototype system based on the above ideas. Moreover, we have mode some experiments to show the effectiveness of this system. Those results show that our method is effective to improve the productivity" of meetings.

  • Toward the New Era of Visual Communication

    Recently, studies aiming at the next generation of visual communication services which support better human communication have been carried out intensively in Japan. The principal motive of these studies is to develop new services which are not restricted to a conventional communication framework based on the transmission of waveform signals. This paper focuses on three important key words in these studies; "intelligent," "real," and "distributed and collaborative," and describes recent research activities. The first key word "intelligent" relates to intelligent image coding. As a particular example, model-based coding of moving facial images is discussed in detail. In this method, shape change and motion of the human face is described by a small number of parameters. This feature leads to the development of new applications such as very low bit-rate transmission of moving facial images, analysis and synthesis of facial expression, human interfaces, and so on. The second key word "real" relates to communication with realistic sensations and virtual space teleconferencing. Among various component technologies, real-time reproduction of 3-D human images and a cooperative work environment with virtual space are discussed in detail. The last key word "distributed and collaborative" relates to collaborative work in a distributed work environment. The importance of visual media in collaborative work, a concept of CSCW, and requirements for realizing a distributed collaborative environment are discussed. Then, four examples of CSCW systems are briefly outlined.
