In this paper, a parallel combinatory spread spectrum (PC/SS) system using a constant amplitude signaling scheme is proposed. The amplitude of the transmitted signal from multicode transmission systems such as PC/SS systems have a large dynamic range which requires that amplifiers have a wide linearity in the transmitter. From a view point of power efficiency, however, it is reasonable to use non-linear amplifiers rather than linear ones. In that case, the bit error rate performance must degrade because of non-linear distortion. The proposed system can avoid influence of the non-linear amplifiers by making the transmitted signal have a constant amplitude. The bit error rate performance and the data transmission rate performance are investigated. They prove that the proposed system is an attractive candidate among the constant amplitude signaling systems.

Orthogonal modulation provides low probability of bit error, however its bandwidth efficiency is very low. Biorthogonal code may double the bandwidth efficiency, but its required bandwidth grows exponentially with the number of input bits as in orthogonal modulation. In this paper, we propose a multi-code biorthogonal code keying (MBCK) scheme that significantly reduces the signal bandwidth with the benefit from orthogonal waveform coding maintained. The system consists of multiple waveform coding blocks, and the sum of output codewords is transmitted. A problem with MBCK is that output signal is multi-level, which requires amplifier with high linearity. So it may not be an appropriate scheme for portable unit where power efficiency is highly important. We also propose a modified MBCK scheme that guarantees constant amplitude output. The transmitter of the proposed scheme contains a redundant waveform coder whose input is generated by encoding the information bits. Adding the codewords from all constituent waveform coding blocks, the composite signal has constant amplitude. It is also shown that the redundant bits are not only used to make constant amplitude signal but also used to improve the BER performance at the receiver.

A constant amplitude transmission scheme for multicode wideband CDMA systems is proposed. Multicode wideband CDMA systems result in large amplitude fluctuation because the multicode signal is the sum of constituent code channel signals. This large amplitude fluctuation brings out large non-linear distortion and then, if unaccounted, can significantly degrade the bit error rate (BER) performance. Constant amplitude transmission, achieved by using a Walsh code and parity generator, is proposed to combat the large amplitude fluctuation and reduce the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). Unlike other constant amplitude transmission scheme, the proposed scheme does not use a redundant code channel. Computer simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves BER performance significantly and that the proposed scheme is extremely effective to the non-linear distortion of high power amplifier (HPA).

In this letter, the constant amplitude transmission for orthogonal multicode systems is discussed. In order to obtain the high power efficiency, we require the high power amplifier which has non-linear characteristic. The nonlinear distortion, however, may occur because of the multicode signals having large amplitude fluctuations. If we can achieve the constant amplitude transmission, the nonlinear distortion can be neglected. In this letter, I investigate the property of the information bit streams that can achieve the constant amplitude transmission and show that the bent sequences can achieve the constant amplitude transmission.
