  • Walking Route Recommender for Supporting a Walk as Health Promotion

    This paper proposes a walking route recommender system aiming at continuously supporting a user to take a walk as means for health promotion. In recent years, taking a walk becomes popular with not only the elderly, but also those from all ages as one of the easiest ways for health promotion. From the viewpoint of health promotion, it is desirable to take a walk as daily exercise. However, walking is very simple activity, which makes it difficult for people to maintain their motivation. Although using an activity monitor is expected to improve the motivation for taking a walk as daily exercise, it forces users to manage their activities by themselves. The proposed system solves such a problem by recommending a walking route that can consume target calories. When a system is to be used for long period of time for supporting user's daily exercise, it should consider the case when a user will not follow the recommended route. It would cause a gap between consumed and target calories. We think this problem becomes serious when a user gradually gets bored with taking a walk during a long period of time. In order to solve the problem, the proposed method implicitly manages calories on monthly basis and recommends walking routes that could keep a user from getting bored. The effectiveness of the recommendation algorithm is evaluated with agent simulation. As another important factor for walking support, this paper also proposes a navigation interface that presents direction to the next visiting point without using a map. As users do not have to continuously focus on the interface, it is not only useful for their safety, but also gives them room to enjoy the landscape. The interface is evaluated by an experiment with test participants.

  • Interval Walking Training for Middle-Aged and Older People: Methods and Evidence Open Access

    Faced with social problems such as rapidly aging society, the solutions have been expected in sports medicine. Humans became widely distributed on the earth from their birth by acquiring abilities to walk in an upright position and to adapt themselves to various natural environments. However, seeking a ‘comfortable environment’ in modern civilization has deteriorated these genetic characteristics of humans, and the consumption of resources and energy to acquire such a ‘comfortable environment’ has induced global warming-associated natural disasters and the destruction of social order. To halt this vicious cycle, we may reactivate the genetic characteristics in humans by doing exercise. To do this, we have developed a health promotion program for middle aged and older people, Jukunen Taiikudaigaku Program, in cooperation with the Japanese government, developed high-intensity interval walking training (IWT), and examined the physical and mental effects on 5,400 people for these 10 years. We found that IWT for 4 months increased physical fitness by 10-20%, decreased the indices of life-style related diseases by 10-20%. Since a prescription of IWT can be conducted by using an IT network system called e-Health Promotion System, the participants in the program were able to receive the prescription even if they lived remote from trainers, enabling them to perform IWT at their favored places and times, and also at low cost. Moreover, we found some single nucleotide polymorphisms closely related to inter-individual differences in the responses to IWT. Further, the system enables us to assess the inactivation/activation of genes for inflammatory responses which has been suggested to be involved in life-style related diseases. Also, the system enables us to search foods to promote health when they are consumed during exercise training. Thus, the system would have strong potential to promote health of middle-aged and older people in advanced aging society.

  • An Internet-Based Cycle Ergometer Health Promotion System for Providing Personally Fitted Exercise

    General exercise approaches are not convenient for some people in undertaking appropriate exercise due to the limited variety of present programs at existing exercise machines. Moreover, continuous support by one sports doctor is only available for a limited number of users. In this paper, therefore, we propose an Internet-based technical framework, which is designed on multi-tiered client/server architecture, for integrating and easily upgrading exercise programs. By applying the technical framework, a cycle ergometer health promotion system was developed for providing personally fitted. We also presented some facilities to assist sports doctors in quickly designing and remotely improving individual exercise protocols against cycle ergometer exercise based on a history database. Then we evaluated the Internet-based cycle ergometer system during two months of feasibility experiments for six elderly persons in terms of usability. As a result, the Internet-based cycle ergometer system was effective for continuously supporting the personal fitting procedure.
