  • Improvement of Packet Loss Probability by Complementer in Dilated Banyan Switch under Hot-Spot Traffic

    Packet contention is one of the fundamental problems that must be overcome in designing packet switches. In banyan network, which has multistage interconnection structure of many small switch elements, we must be concerned with output port conflicts and internal collisions. Dilated banyan network which provides multiple path for internal link can reduce packet loss due to internal collisions in loss system. However, under hot-spot traffic higher packet loss probability is measured at the hot-spot port and the ports close to the hot-spot as coefficient h increases due to the heavy traffic to hot-spot port. In order to moderate the packet loss probability at the hot-spot port we propose the method to disperse the packets which concentrate on the hot-spot route by altering address field of a half of incoming packets. These packets are switched along detour routes. Thus, the traffic concentration toward hot-spot is mitigated and the packet loss probability at the hot-spot port is moderated.

    Input and output queueing two stage ATM switch model which is effective under variable hot-spot traffic is proposed. In order to prevent the degradation of performance due to hot-spot traffic, the hot-spot route is added in which cells destined to the hot-spot port bypass. The switch applies the backpressure mode basically. When the switch judges that the hot-spot port exists, it routes cells destined there to the hot-spot route and applies the queue loss mode on them. We evaluate both the cell loss probability and the mean system delay under the nonuniform traffic with variable hot-spot port by computer simulation. As the results, it is shown that our proposed switch can achieve better switching performance than those of conventional switches under variable traffic condition.

  • Phenomenon of Higher Order Head-of-Line Blocking in Multistage Interconnection Networks under Nonuniform Traffic Patterns

    Nonuniform traffic can degrade the overall performance of multistage interconnection networks substantially. In this paper, this performance degradation is traced back to blocking effects that are not present under uniform traffic patterns within a network. This blocking phenomenon is not mentioned in the literature and is termed higher order Head-of-Line-blocking (HOLk-blocking) in this paper. Methods to determine the HOL-blocking order of multistage networks in order to classify the networks are presented. The performance of networks under hot-spot traffic as a function of their HOL-blocking characteristics is studied by simulation. It is shown that network bandwidth and packet delay improve under nonuniform traffics with increasing HOL-blocking order of a network.
