  • Cartesian Resizing of Line Drawing Pictures for Pixel Line Arts

    We propose a method for downsizing line pictures to generate pixel line arts. In our method, topological properties such as connectivity of lines and segments are preserved by allowing slight distortion in the form of objects in input images. When input line pictures are painted with colors, the number of colors is preserved by our method.

    Graph drawing addresses the problem of constructing geometric representation of information and finds applications in almost every branch of science and technology. Efficient algorithms are essential for automatic drawings of graphs, and hence a lot of research has been carried out in the last decade by many researchers over the world to develop efficient algorithms for drawing graphs. In this paper we survey the recent algorithmic results on various drawings of plane graphs: straight line drawing, convex drawing, orthogonal drawing, rectangular drawing and box-rectangular drawing.

  • Affine Invariant Partial Shape Matching by means of Unification and Expansion of Local Correspondences

    This paper describes a novel method of shape matching by means of unification and expansion of local correspondences on the feature points. The method has the ability to simultaneously locate plural similar parts of two-dimensional objects under affine transformation. Furthermore, the method is applicable to the objects partially occluded. Experimental results show that the method yields results that are satisfactory, even for the cases with additions, deletions and local deviations of some feature points.

  • Line Fitting Method for Line Drawings Based on Contours and Skeletons

    This paper presents a new line extraction method to capture vectors based on contours and skeletons from line drawing raster images in which the lines are touched by characters or other lines. Conventionally, two line extraction methods have generally been used. One is a thinning method. The other is a medial line extraction method based on parallel pairs of contours. The thinning method tends to distort the extracted lines, especially at intersections and corners. On the other hand, the medial line extraction method has a poor capability as regards capturing correct lines at intersections. Contours are able to maintain edge shapes well, while skeletons preserve topological features; thus, a combination of these features effectively leads to the best fitting line. In the proposed method, the line which best fits the original image is selected from among various candidate lines. The candidates are created from several merged short skeleton fragments located between pairs of short contour fragments. The method is also extended to circular arc fitting. Experimental results show that the proposed line fitting method is effective.
