  • Penalty-Free Operation of a DFB-LD in a State of Coherence Collapse and Its Application to Interferometric Noise Reduction

    When a single-mode LD is subjected to distant reflection, relative intensity noise and the width of the optical spectrum are drastically increased. This phenomenon is known as 'coherence collapse. ' This letter demonstrates that penalty-free operation is possible at 2.5 Gbit/s even when a DFB-LD is in a state of coherence collapse. In addition, an LD in a state of coherence collapse is applied to a situation where signal light suffers from interferometric crosstalk. The results show that the LD reduces the influence of interferometric noise because of its wide spectral width.

  • Predistorter Implementation to SLD in Fiber-Optic Wireless Systems

    This paper describes the performance of a predistorter implementation to a superluminescent diode (SLD) in fiber-optic wireless systems under the optical reflection. SLD intensity noise and 3rd-order intermodulation distortion (IM3) are experimentally compared with those of DFB-and FP-LD. It is observed that the IM3 of SLD has ideal 3rd characteristics and output noise remains unchanged against the number of optical connectors. It is also found that the predistorter reduces IM3 by 8 dB. Receiver sensitivity of the system is discussed from the view point of overall design. the BER performance of an SLD with predistorter using a π/4-QPSK signal as a subcarrier is also described theoretically and experimentally.

  • Reflection Induced Degradations in Optical Fiber Feeder for Microcellular Mobile Radio Systems

    This paper reports the influence of optical reflection induced noise and distortion for optical fiber feeder systems for microcellular mobile communication systems. Since the optical feeder requires very wide dynamic range, noise and distortion must be suppressed to an extremely low level. From optical transmission experiments and theoretical analysis, the basic characteristics of the reflection induced noise and distortion were investigated. By using these results, it was estimated that, for currently used analog mobile telephone systems, the number of connectors with 35 dB reflectance must be limited to less than 17, in order to suppress the noise caused by the connector reflections. Moreover, it was confirmed that the reflection induced distortion drastically decreases according to the increase of the length between reflectors. Therefore, the distortion can be suppressed by expanding the connector spacing to more than 7 meters.
