In wireless networks, sleep mode based power saving mechanisms can reduce the energy consumption at the expense of additional packet delay. This letter analyzes its packet queueing delay and wireless terminals' energy efficiency. Based on the analysis, optimal sleep window size can be derived to optimize terminal energy efficiency with delay constraint.

This paper introduces a block based motion estimation algorithm based on projection with adaptive window size selection. The blocks cannot match well if their corresponding 1D projection does not match well, with this as foundation 2D block matching problem is translated to a simpler 1D matching, which eliminates majority of potential pixel participation. This projection method is combined with adaptive window size selection in which, appropriate search window for each block is determined on the basis of motion vectors and prediction errors obtained for the previous block, which makes this novel method several times faster than exhaustive search with negligible performance degradation. Encoding QCIF size video by the proposed method results in reduction of computational complexity of motion estimation by roughly 45% and over all encoding by 23%, while maintaining image/video quality.

  • Searching for the Best Biphase and Quadriphase Quasi-Barker Sequences

Barker sequences have been used in many existing communications and ranging systems. Unfortunately, the longest known biphase and quadriphase Barker sequences are of lengths 13 and 15, respectively. In this paper, we introduce the so-called quasi-Barker sequences which achieve the minimum peak sidelobe level one within a certain window centered at the mainlobe. As our key results, all the best biphase and quadriphase quasi-Barker sequences of lengths up to 36 and 21, respectively, were obtained by an efficient computer search. These sequences may provide better multipath resistance and tracking accuracy in ranging applications.

We propose a beam tracing frame which shifts together with either the guiding structure or the beam propagation in optical circuits. This frame is adaptive to the beam propagation analysis based on the finite-element method and can reduce the computational window size.
