To implement a wideband bandpass filter with improved skirt-selectivity and out-band characteristics, a new parallel-coupled three-line unit with two short-circuited stubs symmetrically-loaded at the center line is proposed. Unlike most traditional ones, the passband of the proposed parallel-coupled three-line structure is based on the cross-coupling between non-adjacent lines rather than the direct-coupling between adjacent ones, whereas a pair of attenuation poles is found in the stopbands. After revealing its work mechanism, an efficient filter-design-scheme is correspondingly proposed for the presented structure. Firstly, based on a chebyshev-filter synthesis theory, a wideband passband filter consisting of a parallel-coupled two-line and two short-circuited stubs loaded at the input- and output- ports is designed. Furthermore, by putting a properly-designed 3/4-wavelength stepped-impedance resonator (SIR) in between the parallel-coupled two lines, two attenuation poles are then realized at the frequencies very close to the cutoff ones. Accordingly, the roll-off characteristics of the filter are significantly-improved to greater than 100,dB/GHz. Furthermore, two-section open-ended stubs are used to replace the short-circuited ones to realize a pair of extra attenuation poles in stopbands. To validate the proposed techniques, a wideband filter with a bandwidth of 3--5,GHz (Fractional bandwidth (FBW) $= (5,GHz-3,GHz)/4,GHz =50%)$ was designed, simulated, fabricated and measured. The measured responses of the filter agree well with the simulation and theoretical ones, which validates the effectiveness of the newly-proposed three-line unit and the corresponding design scheme.

To realize the compact ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass filters, a novel filter prototype with two short-circuited stubs loaded at both sides of a stepped-impedance resonator (SIR) via the parallel coupled lines is proposed based on a distributed filter synthesis theory. The equivalent circuit of this filter is established, while the corresponding 7-pole Chebyshev-type transfer function is derived for filter synthesis. Then, a distributed-circuit-based technique was presented to synthesize the elements' values of this filter. As an example, a FCC UWB filter with the fractional bandwidth (FWB) @ -10 dB up to 110% was designed using the proposed prototype and then re-modeled by commercial microwave circuit simulator to verify the correctness and accuracy of the synthesis theory. Furthermore, in terms of EM simulator, the filter was further-optimized and experimentally-realized by using microstrip line. Good agreements between the measurement results and theoretical ones validate the effectiveness of our technique. In addition, compared with the conventional SIR-type UWB filter without short-circuited stubs, the new one significantly improves the selectivity and out-of-band characteristics (especially in lower one -45 dB@1-2 GHz) to satisfy the FCC's spectrum mask. The designed filter also exhibits very compact size, quite low insertion loss, steep skirts, flat group delay and the easily-fabricatable structure (the coupling gap dimension in this filter is 0.15 mm) as well. Moreover, it should be noted that, in terms of the presented design technique, the proposed filter prototype can be also used to easily realize the UWB filters with other FBW even greater than 110%.

In terms of the transmission-line theory, a general synthesis of a new class of optimum Chebyshev-type ultra-wideband bandpass (UWB) filter prototype composed of multistage stepped-impedance resonators (SIRs) and two short-circuited shunt stubs positioned at input- and output- ports is presented. By the comparison of the real and theoretical transfer functions, the design/characteristic equations are obtained for the design of the proposed filter prototype rather than the traditional design tables. The explicit expressions of one-stage and two-stage filters are then derived and reported. Accordingly, bandpass filters with an arbitrary FBW (Fractional Bandwidth) and passband ripple can be easily designed by solving the design equations. As an example, a 10-degree Chebyshev distributed filter (two-stage filter) with an FBW of 110% is synthesized to meet FCC's outdoor mask. The synthesized circuit model are confirmed by a commercial circuit simulator and then optimized by an EM simulator, fabricated in microstrip line and characterized by the network analyzer. The good agreements between the measured and predicted frequency responses validate the effectiveness of newly proposed filter prototype and the corresponding synthesis technique. In addition, the designed filter exhibits good characteristics of comparatively low insertion loss, quite sharp skirt, very flat group delay and good stopband (especially in lower one) as well. It should be also highlighted that, compared with the conventional filters composed merely of parallel-coupled SIRs or shunt short-circuit-stubs, the new prototype can reduce the overall length of the filter by more than 3/4λg. Moreover, in terms of the presented design technique, the proposed filter prototype can be also used to easily realize the UWB filters with an FBW even greater than 110%.

Properties of a class of M-PhC (metallic-photonic-crystal) point-defect-cavities (PDCs) with a centrally-loaded rod are theoretically and experimentally investigated. After the computation of the resonant frequencies and Q-factors of the resonant modes, the PDCs are fabricated and experimentally measured to validate the simulation results.

A compact optical polarization converter (PC) based on slot waveguide has been proposed in this study. Utilizing the high refractive index contrast between a Si waveguide and SiO2 cladding on the silicon-on-insulator platform, the light beam can be strongly confined in a slot waveguide structure. The proposed PC consists of a square waveguide and an L-shape cover waveguide. Since the overall structure is symmetrically distributed along the axis rotated 45-degree from the horizontal direction, the optical axis of this PC lies in the direction with equi-angle from two orthogonally polarized modes of the input and output ends, which leads to a high polarization conversion efficiency (PCE). 3D FDTD simulation results illustrate that a TE-to-TM mode conversion is achieved with a device length of 8.2 µm, and the PCE exceeds 99.8%. The structural tolerance and wavelength dependence of the PC have also been discussed in detail.

The purpose of this paper is to propose an efficient and effective design scheme to implement compact, high-performance wideband bandpass filters based on a novel compound three-line unit consisting of a stub-loaded short-circuited parallel-coupled three-line structure and two lead lines. Firstly, a simulative investigation is conducted on the transmission characteristics of the proposed coupling unit. The results show that the bandwidth of such structure can be predicted by a symmetric parallel-coupled short-circuited three-line unit, whereas the transmission zeros by a three-section stub composed of the loaded stub, one of the parallel-coupled three lines and the lead line. Accordingly, given specifications, a pseudo-elliptical filter can be designed in an novel three-coupled-line based two-step design scheme: 1. after the derivation of the new closed-form synthesis formulae, a Chebyshev ultra-wideband (UWB) filter is synthesized on a desired passband using symmetric three-line coupling units. 2. By designing the stubs and choosing the proper lengths of the lead lines, multiple transmission zeros are then introduced to improve the skirt and stopband characteristics, whereas the equiripple characteristics are kept in passband. As an example, a UWB bandpass filter covering the Japan's lower UWB band (BW: 3.1-4.8 GHz, FBW: 43%) is designed to describe the proposed design procedure. The measured filtering characteristics agree very well with the theoretical predictions, which validate the effectiveness of the proposed new coupling structure and corresponding filter design technique. In addition, the designed filters exhibit good characteristics, such as steep skirt selectivity, very wide stopbands, a compact size compared with the filter based on short-circuited three-line structure, etc.

A single-polarization single-mode (SPSM) photonic crystal fiber (PCF) based on double-hole unit core is proposed in this paper for application to cross-talk free polarization splitter (PS). Birefringence of the PCF is obtained by adopting double-hole unit cells into the core to destroy its symmetry. With an appropriate cladding hole size, single x- or y-polarized PCF can be achieved by arranging the double-hole unit in the core along the x- or y-axis, respectively. Moreover, our proposed SPSM PCF has the potential to be applied to consist a cross-talk free PS. The simulation result by employing a vectorial finite element beam propagation method (FE-BPM) demonstrates that an arbitrary polarized incident light can be completely separated into two orthogonal single-polarized components through the PS. The structural tolerance and wavelength dependence of the PS have also been discussed in detail.

Two-Thickness-Method (TTM) based on an open-ended coaxial probe was investigated with an emphasis on uncertainty analysis to perfect this technique. Uncertainty equations in differential forms are established for the simultaneous measurement of complex electromagnetic (EM) parameters in the systematical consideration of various error factors in measurement. Worst-case differential uncertainty equations were defined while the implicit partial derivation techniques were used to find the coefficients in formulation. The relations between the uncertainties and test sample's thicknesses were depicted via 3D figures, while the influence of the coaxial line's dimension on the measurement accuracy is also included based on the same analysis method. The comparisons between the measured errors and theoretical uncertainty prediction are given for several samples, which validate the effectiveness of our analysis.

This brief paper proposes a dual-wideband filter consisting of a parallel-coupled stepped-impedance-resonator (SIR) and open-circuited stubs. Firstly, a notched UWB (ultra-wideband) bandpass filter (BPF) with steep skirt characteristics is theoretically designed. Then a bandstop filter(BSF) is implemented using an SIR and open stubs. By replacing the transmission line part of UWB filter with the BSF, a novel dual-wideband filter (DWBPF) is realized. As a design example, a DWBPF with two passbands, i.e. 3.4-4.8GHz and 7.25-10.25GHz, is designed to validate the design procedure. The designed filter exhibits steep skirt characteristics.

Frequency-variation method (FVM), reported in [1], was further studied for simultaneously measuring the both complex permittivity and complex permeability by intentionally changing the test frequency to obtain different reflections. An enhanced coaxial-probe-based in-situ measurement system has been established. The spectral domain full-wave model is derived to take place of the quasi-static one. A novel coaxial probe is designed so that the one-port calibration could be performed with Agilent-supplied precise cal-kit instead of the liquid standard. Criterions for a right order of the interpolation polynomial used to approximate the frequency-dependent EM parameters; measures to reduce the residual mismatch errors and random error in reflection measurements and to suppress the ambiguities in solving the transcendent equation system were experimentally studied to resolve the problems and improve the accuracy in dispersive absorbing materials' test. Several typical dispersive absorbing coatings have been tested via FVM. The good comparison between the measured results and reference ones validate the feasibility of the proposed improved technique.

This paper presents a theoretical design of novel THz bandpass filters composed of M-PhC (metallic-photonic-crystal) point-defect-cavities (PDCs) with a centrally-loaded-rod. After a brief review of the properties of the recently-proposed M-PhC PDCs, two inline-type bandpass filters are synthesized in terms of the coupling matrix theory. The FDTD simulation results of the synthesized filters are in good agreement with the theoretical ones, which confirms the validity of the proposed filters' structures and the design scheme.
