  • SmartUI: Resource-Saving and Editable Smartphone User Interface for Fast Remote PC Control

    There have been many previous studies to facilitate the use of smartphones as remote controllers of PCs. Image-based user interfaces have been suggested to provide fully functioning remote applications. However, most previous image-based interfaces consume high battery power and network bandwidth. Also most users have specific preferences on various applications on remote PCs, but previous smartphone interface systems would not allow users to define their own smartphone interfaces to set their preferences. This paper presents a new smartphone user interface system, SmartUI, for remote PC control. SmartUI is designed as a text-oriented web-based interface, so that it can be used on any smartphone with a built-in web browser while saving battery power and network bandwidth. Moreover, SmartUI enables a user to create buttons on a smartphone; for a quick launch and for shortcut keys, associated with a specific remote PC application. As a result, SmartUI allows a user to create his or her own smartphone interface for remote PC control, while saving battery power and network bandwidth. SmartUI has been tested with various smartphones and the results are also presented in this paper.

    It is not easy for a student to present a question or comment to the lecturer and other students in large classes. This paper introduces a new audience presentation system (APS), which creates slide presentations of students' mobile responses in the classroom. Experimental surveys demonstrate the utility of this APS for classroom interactivity.

    This paper presents an adaptive least-significant-bit (LSB) steganography for spatial color images on smartphones. For each red, green, and blue color component, the combinations of All-4bit, One-4bit+Two-2bit, and Two-3bit+One-2bit LSB replacements are proposed for content-adaptivity and natural histograms. The high capacity of 8.4bpp with the average peak signal noise ratio (PSNR) 43.7db and fast processing times on smartphones are also demonstrated

    This letter presents an innovative solution for real-time interaction during online classes. Synchronous sharing enables instructors to provide real-time feedback to students. This encourages students to stay focused and feel engaged during class. Consequently, students evaluated anonymously that this solution significantly enhanced their learning experience during real-time online classes.

    This letter presents a new framework for synchronous remote online exams. This framework proposes new monitoring of notebooks in remote locations and limited messaging only enabled between students and their instructor during online exams. This framework was evaluated by students as highly effective in minimizing cheating during online exams.

  • A Practical System for Instant 3D Games Using Quizzes

    This paper presents a practical system which allows instructors to easily introduce 3D games utilizing smartphones in a classroom. The system consists of a PC server, a big screen and smartphone clients. The server provides 3D models, so no 3D authoring is needed when using this system. For an instructor, preparing slides of quiz-questions with the correct answers is all that is required when designing 3D games. According to a quiz specified by an instructor, this system constructs a corresponding 3D game scene. The answers students provide on their smartphones will be used to play this game. Everyone in the classroom can see this 3D game in real time on a big screen. The game illustrates how every student has reacted to a quiz. This system also introduces specialized queues for mobile interactions; a queue for commands from an instructor and a queue for data from students. The command queue has higher priority than the data queue; so that an instructor can control this system by sending commands with clicks on a smartphone. Previous studies have mostly provided specially designed teaching materials to instructors, often treating them as passive consultants. However, by using slides, already familiar to instructors, this system enables instructors to combine their own teaching materials with 3D games in the classroom. Moreover, 3D games are expected to further motivate students to actively participate in classroom activities. This system is evaluated in this paper.
