Lightwave switching is discussed with a cascaded connection of optical couplers with light intensity control elements. By employing wavelength-selective amplifiers such as a waveguide-type Raman amplifier, all-optical wavelength-selective switching can be realized. We discuss analytically using coupled-mode theory that the lightwave switching is feasible by controlling the intensity of propagating lightwave. The switching operation is verified numerically using finite-difference beam-propagation method. As a result, the expected operation is realized and some characteristics involved with dependencies of wavelength and phase are also investigated. A preliminary experiment using attenuators, beam splitters and mirrors is also described to verify the switching operation with only light-intensity control in interferometers.

Optical label processing is expected to reduce power consumption in label switching network nodes. Previously, we proposed passive waveguide circuits for the recognition of BPSK labels with a theoretically infinite contrast ratio. The recognizable label number was limited to four and eight for 4-bit and 8-bit BPSK labels, respectively. In this paper, we propose methods to increase the recognizable label number. The proposed circuits can recognize eight and sixteen labels of 4-bit BPSK codes with a contrast ratio of 4.00 and 2.78, respectively. As 8-bit BSPK codes, 64, 128, and 256 labels can be recognized with a contrast ratio of 4.00, 2.78, and 1.65, respectively. In recognition of all encoded labels, that is, 16 and 256 labels for 4-bit and 8-bit BPSK labels, a reference signal is employed to identify the sign of the optical output signals. The effect of phase deviation and loss along the optical waveguides of the devices is also discussed.

Conversion between multi-level modulation formats is one of key processing functions for flexible networking aimed at high spectral efficiency (SE) in optical fiber transmission. The authors previously proposed an all-optical format conversion system from binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) to quadrature PSK (QPSK) and reported an experimental demonstration. In this paper, we consider its reversed conversion, that is, from QPSK to BPSK. The proposed system consists of a highly nonlinear fiber used to generate complex conjugate signal, and a 3-dB directional coupler used to produce converted signals by interfering the incident signal with the complex conjugate signal. The incident QPSK stream is converted into two BPSK tributaries without any loss of transmitting data. We show the system performances such as bit-error-rate and optical signal-to-noise ratio penalty evaluated by numerical simulation.

A two-dimensional filter for photonic label recognition system using time-to-space conversion and delay compensation was designed using Genetic-Algorithms (GA). For four-bit Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) labels at 160 Gbit/s, contrast ratio of the output for eight different labels was improved by optimization of two-dimentional filtering. The contrast ratio of auto-correlation to cross-correlation larger than 2.16 was obtained by computer simulation. This value is 22% larger than the value of 1.77 with the previously reported system using matched filters.
Switching characteristics such as wavelength dependency and phase dependency are investigated for our proposed switch which consists of waveguide-type Raman amplifiers and 3-dB couplers. As a result, the available range of wavelength and phase shift due to nonlinear effect are estimated about 20 nm around 1.55 µm and about 10 degrees, respectively.
