The transmit power of Ultra Wideband (UWB) is limited in short range communications to avoid the interference with existing narrow-band communication systems. Since this limits UWB communication range, this paper proposes a novel relay scheme that uses shared frequency repeaters for impulse UWB signal relay to improve system range. After considering possible problems with the repeater, in particular the coupling interference between the input and output and relay-delay, a switching control method is proposed that offers short relay-delay and suppresses the coupling interference at the repeaters. With respect to the proposed relay scheme, Pulse-Position-Modulation (PPM) UWB-based signal relay is evaluated by analyzing its BER performance using the point-to-point transmission link model.

This paper develops a prediction model for evaluating the influence of propagation attenuation due to aircraft's flying across the earth-satellite link. This prediction model is based on the Aperture-field method of Huygens-Fresnel wave theory. Considering arriving and taking off course around airport, attenuation impairment is calculated for different types of aircrafts and flight directions. In order to verify this model's accuracy, numerical results are compared with measurement values. The calculations agree well with the measurements. Ground antenna directivity and anticipated impairment to digital broadcasting system such as Perfect TV are also discussed.

In a wireless home network, shadowing is frequently caused by human bodies or furniture. Therefore, relay transmission function is considered for the hub station in Wireless Homelink when the direct communication of terminals is obstructed. However, in relaying high rate isochronous data such as video streams, the bandwidth resource of Wireless Homelink may be crammed with those data. In this paper, we propose an efficient relay scheme--"Pipeline Repeater" for Wireless Homelink. The proposed scheme spatially multiplexes the relay transfer of the isochronous data using antenna directivity. The Pipeline Repeater can relay the isochronous packets as an efficient use of the limited frequency band, and it can be achieved to repeat the high rate data with delay of only one frame. To verify the proposed scheme, we conduct measurements in some actual home environments, and perform the numerical analyses and computer simulations based on the measurements. Our results confirm the efficiency of the Pipeline Repeater scheme.

We investigated the use of the Wireless 1394 standard in an intra-vehicle environment. Wireless 1394 services are expected to be used both in homes and in vehicles, however the installation of twisted wire pairs in a car is difficult. In a vehicular environment, there is a problem of interference from nearby vehicles using the same frequency. In this paper, we examined the above problem of interference for vehicles using Wireless 1394 equipments, and measured the propagation characteristics between a transmitter in one vehicle and a receiver in another vehicle. We developed a mitigation method, based on the use of directional antennas as a solution to the problem of interference.

An enhanced Ultra Wideband (UWB) signaling scheme that employs PSWF (Prolate Spheroidal Wave Functions)-based orthogonal chip pulses and ternary complementary code sets is proposed for Direct-Sequence (DS) UWB systems. Every information bit of each user is modulated and transmitted over a set of parallel sequences of PSWF-based orthogonal chip pulses and are further assigned to a ternary complementary code set with additional zero padding if necessary. Moreover, the ternary complementary code sets are generated to be mutually orthogonal and assigned to any pair of multiple users. Hence, the mitigation of multipath interference as well as multiple user interference (MUI) can be expected. Furthermore, the ternary code length can be greatly shortened by taking advantage of pulse and code orthogonality. Thus, the proposed transmission scheme is especially suitable for high data rate DS-UWB systems that offer very high flexibility.

In this paper, Pre-Rake scheme for pulse based Ultra Wideband impulse radio (UWB-IR) communications system is proposed considering a standardized UWB channel model from IEEE 802.15 SG3a, which is based on an extensive set of short-range indoor channel measurements. Two kinds of pulse waveforms are taken in account here, namely, Gaussian mono-pulse and newly designed Prolate Spheroidal Wave Functions (PSWF) pulses corresponding to FCC Spectrum Mask. The Pre-Rake scheme is shown to contribute to the low-power, cost-efficient UWB system designing as well as Rake combining gain. Instead of building a Rake receiver at the receiving side (e.g. portable unit), the transmitter (e.g. access point) can pre-combine the UWB signal before transmission in the forward link by estimating the channel impulse response from the reverse link. While the Pre-Raked signal is convolved with the estimated channel impulse response, the function of Rake combination at the receiver is automatically performed. Meanwhile, in order to defeat inter-pulse-interferences (IPI) caused by severe multipath fading conditions, adaptive guard-time scheme for consecutive pulses is proposed as well. Monte-Carlo simulations are carried out to compare the Pre-Rake with Rake results and show that Pre-Rake scheme is as good as Rake combining for both types of pulse waveforms. Then the mobile or portable unit with a conventional receiver can still achieve the diversity gain of Rake combination. Moreover, the effects of placing guard-time between pulses are also verified.

This paper develops a deterministic model for evaluating the influence of building windows upon the outdoor-to-indoor propagation path in cellular systems. This prediction model is based on the Aperture-field method of Huygens-Fresnel wave theory. Penetration losses and indoor signal characteristics are analyzed. It is found that the window frames of the building play an important role in determining the indoor field intensities. In order to verify this model's accuracy, numerical results are compared with measurement values. The calculations agree well with the measurements.
