  • A Resilient Forest-Based Application Level Multicast for Real-Time Streaming

    In recent years, real-time streaming has become widespread as a major service on the Internet. However, real-time streaming has a strict playback deadline. Application level multicasts using multiple distribution trees, which are known as forests, are an effective approach for reducing delay and jitter. However, the failure or departure of nodes during forest-based multicast transfer can severely affect the performance of other nodes. Thus, the multimedia data quality is degraded until the distribution trees are repaired. This means that increasing the speed of recovery from isolation is very important, especially in real-time streaming services. In this paper, we propose three methods for resolving this problem. The first method is a random-based proactive method that achieves rapid recovery from isolation and gives efficient “Randomized Forwarding” via cooperation among distribution trees. Each node forwards the data it receives to child nodes in its tree, and then, the node randomly transferring it to other trees with a predetermined probability. The second method is a reactive method, which provides a reliable isolation recovery method with low overheads. In this method, an isolated node requests “Continuous Forwarding” from other nodes if it detects a problem with a parent node. Forwarding to the nearest nodes in the IP network ensures that this method is efficient. The third method is a hybrid method that combines these two methods to achieve further performance improvements. We evaluated the performances of these proposed methods using computer simulations. The simulation results demonstrated that our proposed methods delivered isolation recovery and that the hybrid method was the most suitable for real-time streaming.

  • Combined Detection Method in a Sea Surveillance System

    We propose a sea surveillance system that automatically detects intruding objects in the sea. The difficulty with an automatic system is detecting objects such as moving boats while reducing false positives caused by some waves and reflections in the sea. A false positive is reporting an object which doesn't actually exist, while a false negative is a failure in detecting an intruding object. Firstly, we identify factors of false positives. Secondly, we propose a new surveillance system considering these factors. Our proposed system combines three detecting methods. The first method is detection of Differences between Surveillance images and Flapping Reference images (DSFR). The second method is detection of Contours from Averaging images (CA). The third method is Silhouette object Detection (SD). The combination of DSFR and CA detects various moving objects under normal light conditions, while SD detects objects under backlight conditions. Finally we apply our proposed method to actual situations. Our proposed method detected boats while reducing false positives effectively.

  • Intra-Vehicle Wireless 1394 System

    We investigated the use of the Wireless 1394 standard in an intra-vehicle environment. Wireless 1394 services are expected to be used both in homes and in vehicles, however the installation of twisted wire pairs in a car is difficult. In a vehicular environment, there is a problem of interference from nearby vehicles using the same frequency. In this paper, we examined the above problem of interference for vehicles using Wireless 1394 equipments, and measured the propagation characteristics between a transmitter in one vehicle and a receiver in another vehicle. We developed a mitigation method, based on the use of directional antennas as a solution to the problem of interference.

    The luminance of about 10,000 cd/m2 at an applied voltage of 9.2 V and the external emission efficiency 5.5 cd/A at an injection current density of 50 mA/cm2 have been obtained from an organic light emitting diode (OLED) using starburst molecule doped with 5,6,11,12-tetraphenylnaphthacene fabricated by wet-processing. We demonstrate that the OLEDs fabricated by wet-processing can be applied to fields of short range optical communication as the electro-optical conversion device for transmitting the signals of moving picture.
