Shot transition detection is a core technology in video browsing, indexing systems and information retrieval. In this paper we propose a dissolve detection algorithm using the characteristics of edge in MPEG compressed video. Using the intensity change information of edge pixels obtained by Sobel edge detector, we detect the location of a dissolve and its precise duration. We also present a new reliable method to eliminate the false dissolves. The proposed algorithm is tested in various types of videos, and the experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is effective and robust.

This paper proposes a new method of retrieving images from large image databases. The method is based on VQ (Vector Quantization) of local texture features at interest points automatically detected in an image. The texture features are extracted by Gabor wavelet filter bank, and rearranged for rotation. These features are classified by VQ and then construct a pattern histogram. Retrievals are performed by just comparing pattern histograms between images.

This letter proposes a new detection method of human faces in gray scale image with cluttered background using a face template and elliptical structure of the human face. This proposed method can be applicable even in the cases that the face is much smaller than image size and several faces exist in one image, which is impossible in the existing one.
