Shot transition detection is a core technology in video browsing, indexing systems and information retrieval. In this paper we propose a dissolve detection algorithm using the characteristics of edge in MPEG compressed video. Using the intensity change information of edge pixels obtained by Sobel edge detector, we detect the location of a dissolve and its precise duration. We also present a new reliable method to eliminate the false dissolves. The proposed algorithm is tested in various types of videos, and the experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is effective and robust.

In this paper, we present improved alternative sequential filter-edge detector using generalized directional morphological filters. Based on the properties of effective noise removal and detail preservation of the generalized directional morphological filters, we apply these filters to edge detection of noisy images. The performance of the edge detection in the presence of mixed noise is evaluated. Simulations show that edge detection method using generalized directional morphological filters can also improve the performance.

A novel motion vector re-estimation technique for transcoding into lower spatial resolution is proposed. This technique is based on the fact that the block matching error is proportional to the complexity of the reference block with Taylor series expansion. It is shown that the motion vectors re-estimated by the proposed method are closer to optimal ones and offer better quality than those of previous techniques.

In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a cost effective Ethernet over HDLC forwarding VLSI for network access system. It supports 10/100 Mbps Ethernet PHYs and up to 50 Mbps HDLC interface directly applied to Modem or transceiver. The maximum forwarding/filtering rate is 90,000 pps with a throughput latency of 1 frame, which supports high speed applications. It can also support both master mode for Ethernet PHY and slave mode for switching chip by the pin configuration. It has been implemented as a single chip based on 0.5 µm CMOS technology. Field test shows that the wire-speed packet forwarding and processing using by the implemented chip can be achieved.

This paper proposes a new method of retrieving images from large image databases. The method is based on VQ (Vector Quantization) of local texture features at interest points automatically detected in an image. The texture features are extracted by Gabor wavelet filter bank, and rearranged for rotation. These features are classified by VQ and then construct a pattern histogram. Retrievals are performed by just comparing pattern histograms between images.
A low bit-rate encoding method which yields a good performance in edge reconstruction while achieving a high compression is proposed through MTF function and the spatial anisotropy of human vision. Human visual weighting factors applied to sub-blocks within each subband in wavelet domain are produced by the spatial anisotropic-filter, then a good perceptual performance can be obtained.

This letter proposes a new detection method of human faces in gray scale image with cluttered background using a face template and elliptical structure of the human face. This proposed method can be applicable even in the cases that the face is much smaller than image size and several faces exist in one image, which is impossible in the existing one.

A novel caption text detection and recognition algorithm using the temporal nature of video is proposed in this paper. A text registration technique is used to locate the temporal and spatial positions of captions in video from the accumulated frame difference information. Experimental results show that the proposed method is effective and robust. Also, a high processing speed is achieved since no time consuming operation is included.
