    An earthquake is a destructive natural disaster, which cannot be predicted accurately and causes devastating damage and losses. In fact, many of the damages can be prevented if people know what to do during and after earthquakes. Earthquake education is the most important method to raise public awareness and mitigate the damage caused by earthquakes. Generally, earthquake education consists of conducting traditional earthquake drills in schools or communities and experiencing an earthquake through the use of an earthquake simulator. However, these approaches are unrealistic or expensive to apply, especially in underdeveloped areas where earthquakes occur frequently. In this paper, an earthquake drill simulation system based on virtual reality (VR) technology is proposed. A User is immersed in a 3D virtual earthquake environment through a head mounted display and is able to control the avatar in a virtual scene via Kinect to respond to the simulated earthquake environment generated by SIGVerse, a simulation platform. It is a cost effective solution and is easy to deploy. The design and implementation of this VR system is proposed and a dormitory earthquake simulation is conducted. Results show that powerful earthquakes can be simulated successfully and the VR technology can be applied in the earthquake drills.

  • Segmenting the Femoral Head and Acetabulum in the Hip Joint Automatically Using a Multi-Step Scheme

    We describe a multi-step approach for automatic segmentation of the femoral head and the acetabulum in the hip joint from three dimensional (3D) CT images. Our segmentation method consists of the following steps: 1) construction of the valley-emphasized image by subtracting valleys from the original images; 2) initial segmentation of the bone regions by using conventional techniques including the initial threshold and binary morphological operations from the valley-emphasized image; 3) further segmentation of the bone regions by using the iterative adaptive classification with the initial segmentation result; 4) detection of the rough bone boundaries based on the segmented bone regions; 5) 3D reconstruction of the bone surface using the rough bone boundaries obtained in step 4) by a network of triangles; 6) correction of all vertices of the 3D bone surface based on the normal direction of vertices; 7) adjustment of the bone surface based on the corrected vertices. We evaluated our approach on 35 CT patient data sets. Our experimental results show that our segmentation algorithm is more accurate and robust against noise than other conventional approaches for automatic segmentation of the femoral head and the acetabulum. Average root-mean-square (RMS) distance from manual reference segmentations created by experienced users was approximately 0.68 mm (in-plane resolution of the CT data).

  • Improved LEACH-M Protocol for Processing Outlier Nodes in Aerial Sensor Networks

    As the nodes of AWSN (Aerial Wireless Sensor Networks) fly around, the network topology changes frequently with high energy consumption and high cluster head mortality, and some sensor nodes may fly away from the original cluster and interrupt network communication. To ensure the normal communication of the network, this paper proposes an improved LEACH-M protocol for aerial wireless sensor networks. The protocol is improved based on the traditional LEACH-M protocol and MCR protocol. A Cluster head selection method based on maximum energy and an efficient solution for outlier nodes is proposed to ensure that cluster heads can be replaced prior to their death and ensure outlier nodes re-home quickly and efficiently. The experiments show that, compared with the LEACH-M protocol and MCR protocol, the improved LEACH-M protocol performance is significantly optimized, increasing network data transmission efficiency, improving energy utilization, and extending network lifetime.

  • SAWSDL Service Discovery Based on Fine-Grained Data Semantics

    With the aim to improve the effectiveness of SAWSDL service discovery, this paper proposes a novel discovery method for SAWSDL services, which is based on the matchmaking of so-called fine-grained data semantics that is defined via sets of atomic elements with built-in data types. The fine-grained data semantics can be obtained by a transformation algorithm that decomposes parameters at message level into a set of atomic elements, considering the characteristics of SAWSDL service structure and semantic annotations. Then, a matchmaking algorithm is proposed for the matching of fine-grained data semantics, which avoids the complex and expensive structural matching at the message level. The fine-grained data semantics is transparent to the specific data structure of message-level parameters, therefore, it can help to match successfully similar Web services with different data structures of parameters. Moreover, a comprehensive measure is proposed by considering together several important components of SAWSDL service descriptions at the same time. Finally, this method is evaluated on SAWSDL service discovery test collection SAWSDL-TC2 and compared with other SAWSDL matchmakers. The experimental results show that our method can improve the effectiveness of SAWSDL service discovery with low average query response time. The results imply that fine-grained parameters fit to represent the data semantics of SAWSDL services, especially when data structures of parameters are not important for semantics.
