In order to detect snow and ice on a road surface, the microwave measurement method of dielectric constants are presented. And some examples of measurements for artificial and natural snow and ice using the method are introduced. The results show reasonable estimations of the dielectric constants, and they indicate that the method could be utilized for the snow and ice detection.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) plans to launch a geostationary satellite called Engineering Test Satellite VIII (ETS-VIII) in FY 2006. In this paper, a microstrip line array antenna, which has a very simple structure, is introduced to radiate a circularly polarized wave aiming at ETS-VIII applications. This antenna consists of a triangular conducting line with its vertexes rounded off, located above a ground plane, with a gap on one of its side to produce a circular polarization. The proposed antenna is analyzed by numerical simulations for a single element as well as for a three elements array configuration and the possibility of beam-switching in the azimuth space is experimentally confirmed in the latter case. It is found that by properly feeding the elements constituting the array antenna, for an elevation angle El = 48in Tokyo area, three beams are created in the conical-cut direction with a minimum gain more than 6.6 dBic and an axial ratio less than 3 dB.

Antenna radiation patterns have side-lobes that add to ambiguity in the form of ghosting and object repetition in SAR images. An L-band 1.27GHz, 2×5 element proximity-coupled corner-truncated patch array antenna synthesized using the Dolph-Chebyshev method to reduce side-lobe levels is proposed. The designed antenna was sim-ulated, optimized, and fabricated for antenna performance parameter measurements. Antenna performance characteristics show good agree-ment with simulated results. A set of antennas were fabricated and then used together with a custom synthetic aperture radar system and SAR imaging performed on a point target in an anechoic chamber. Imaging results are also discussed in this paper showing improvement in image output. The antenna and its connected SAR systems developed in this work are different from most previous work in that this work is utilizing circular polarization as opposed to linear polarization.

Two wideband circularly polarized (CP) equilateral triangular slot (ETS) antennas are proposed for communication system and the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Radio Occultation (RO) sensor of the GAIA-I microsatellite. These wide slot antennas use the ring slot antenna CP generation method due to their shape. The compact antennas employ truncated corners, grounded equilateral triangular perturbation patch and branched feed line to create CP radiation. A 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) enhancement is achieved by inserting a pair of slits into the ETS. A parametric study on the influence of those shape modifications in reflection coefficient and axial ratio is presented. An ETS antenna for communication system of the GAIA-I is fabricated and measured, which is shown to agree well with its simulated performance by providing CP fractional bandwidth of 52%. An ETS antenna designed for the GNSS RO sensor of GAIA-I delivers 3-dB ARBW of 41.6%. The ETS antenna offers uni-directional radiation by mounting a 3D printed truncated cone reflector underneath which also enhances antenna gain.
