  • Single Carrier Frequency Offset Estimation with Low Threshold Effect

    Frequency offset estimation is an important technique in receiver design of wireless communications. In many applications, sampled single frequency tone is selected as training symbol/sequence for frequency synchronization. Under this assumption, frequency offset estimation can be regarded as the problem of single carrier frequency offset estimation. In this Letter, an approximate maximum likelihood frequency estimator is proposed. This estimator is efficient at moderate and high SNR's. Compared with other estimators, the proposed estimator is less sensitive to the variance threshold and offers feasible levels of computation complexity. The proposed estimator is suitable for high frequency offset cases and coarse/fine frequency synchronization applications.

    Carrier frequency offset may distort the orthogonality of the subcarriers in OFDM systems and it must be estimated and compensated to maintain the system performance. A blind carrier frequency offset estimator based on the histogram of the received signal's phase is proposed in this letter. The proposed estimator can operate under additive white Gaussian noise and multipath channels without known training signal, redundant guard interval, and virtual carrier. Compared to subspace-based blind estimators, the proposed estimator can provide better mean-square-error performance.

    A blind channel estimation algorithm based on the subspace method for single-input multiple-output (SIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems is proposed in this letter. With the aid of a repetition index, the conventional algorithm is a special case of our algorithm. Compared with related studies, the proposed algorithm reduces the computational complexity of the SVD operation and is suitable for cyclic-prefix-free systems. In particular, the necessary condition of the proposed signal matrix to be full rank can be satisfied with fewer OFDM blocks. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms conventional methods in normalized mean-square error.

    Scheduling algorithms are crucial in radio resource management especially for multimedia networks. Many scheduling algorithms are based on the assumption of error-free connections, which is not suitable for wireless networks. Therefore, a scheduling algorithm based on the modification of Static Priority (SP) algorithm and Earliest-Due-Date (EDD) algorithm is proposed for wireless multimedia networks with link adaptation in this paper. In the proposed algorithm, various quality of service requirements, such as delay, throughput, and packet loss ratio, are considered. Particularly, the influence of error tolerance of voice communications, which is usually ignored in most scheduling algorithms, is taken into account. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm, compared with SP, EDD, and other scheduling algorithms, succeeds in meeting the delay and packet loss ratio (PLR) requirements at much heavier traffic load.

  • A Switching Type-II Hybrid ARQ Scheme with RCPT Codes

    A switching type-II hybrid ARQ scheme with rate compatible punctured turbo (RCPT) codes is proposed in this letter. The proposed scheme combines three retransmission schemes by minimizing a cost function that yields a compromise between throughput and delay time. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by computer simulations. Compared with conventional hybrid ARQ algorithms, the proposed algorithm can offer almost the same throughput performance with smaller time delay.
