In this letter, a novel channel impulse response (CIR)-based fingerprinting positioning method using kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) has been proposed. During the offline phase of the proposed method, a survey is performed to collect all CIRs from access points, and a fingerprint database is constructed, which has vectors including CIR and physical location. During the online phase, KPCA is first employed to solve the nonlinearity and complexity in the CIR-position dependencies and extract the principal nonlinear features in CIRs, and support vector regression is then used to adaptively learn the regress function between the KPCA components and physical locations. In addition, the iterative narrowing-scope step is further used to refine the estimation. The performance comparison shows that the proposed method outperforms the traditional received signal strength based positioning methods.

Inspired from the idea of data representation in manifold learning, we derive a novel model which combines the original training images and their tangent vectors to represent each image in the testing set. Different from the previous methods, the L1 norm is used to control the reconstruction error. Considering the fact that the objective function in the proposed model is non-smooth, we utilize the majorization minimization (MM) method to solve the proposed optimization model. It is interesting to note that at each iteration a quadratic optimization problem is formulated and its analytical solution can be achieved, thereby making the proposed algorithm effective. Extensive experiments on face images demonstrate that our method achieves better performance than some previous methods.

Media Access Control (MAC) is critical to guarantee different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) networks, such as high reliability for safety packets and high throughput for service packets. Meanwhile, due to their ability to provide lower delay and higher data rates, more UAVs are using frequently directional antennas. However, it is challenging to support different QoS in UAV networks with directional antennas, because of the high mobility of UAV which causes serious channel resource loss. In this paper, we propose CU-MAC which is a MAC protocol for Centralized UAV networks with directional antennas. First, we design a mobility prediction based time-frame optimization scheme to provide reliable broadcast service for safety packets. Then, a traffic prediction based channel allocation scheme is proposed to guarantee the priority of video packets which are the most common service packets nowadays. Simulation results show that compared with other representative protocols, CU-MAC achieves higher reliability for safety packets and improves the throughput of service packets, especially video packets.

Much research which has shown the usage of social ties could improve the location predictive performance, but as the strength of social ties is varying constantly with time, using the movement data of user's close friends at different times could obtain a better predictive performance. A hybrid Markov location prediction algorithm based on dynamic social ties is presented. The time is divided by the absolute time (week) to mine the long-term changing trend of users' social ties, and then the movements of each week are projected to the workdays and weekends to find the changes of the social circle in different time slices. The segmented friends' movements are compared to the history of the user with our modified cross-sample entropy to discover the individuals who have the relatively high similarity with the user in different time intervals. Finally, the user's historical movement data and his friends' movements at different times which are assigned with the similarity weights are combined to build the hybrid Markov model. The experiments based on a real location-based social network dataset show the hybrid Markov location prediction algorithm could improve 15% predictive accuracy compared with the location prediction algorithms that consider the global strength of social ties.

Existing studies on transportation mode detection from global positioning system (GPS) trajectories mainly adopt handcrafted features. These features require researchers with a professional background and do not always work well because of the complexity of traffic behavior. To address these issues, we propose a model using a sparse autoencoder to extract point-level deep features from point-level handcrafted features. A convolution neural network then aggregates the point-level deep features and generates a trajectory-level deep feature. A deep neural network incorporates the trajectory-level handcrafted features and the trajectory-level deep feature for detecting the users' transportation modes. Experiments conducted on Microsoft's GeoLife data show that our model can automatically extract the effective features and improve the accuracy of transportation mode detection. Compared with the model using only handcrafted features and shallow classifiers, the proposed model increases the maximum accuracy by 6%.

Most existing outlier detection algorithms only utilized location of trajectory points and neglected some important factors such as speed, acceleration, and corner. To address this problem, we present a Trajectory Outlier Detection algorithm based on Multi-Factors (TODMF). TODMF is improved in terms of distance-based outlier detection algorithms. It combines multi-factors into outlier detection to find more meaningful trajectory outliers. We resort to Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) to optimize the number of factors when determining what factors will be considered. Finally, the experiments with real trajectory data sets show that TODMF performs efficiently and effectively when applied to the problem of trajectory outlier detection.

In lossy image/video encoding, there is a compromise between the number of bits and the extent of distortion. Optimizing the allocation of bits to different sources, such as frames or blocks, can improve the encoding performance. In intra-frame encoding, due to the dependency among macro blocks (MBs) introduced by intra prediction, the optimization of bit allocation to the MBs usually has high complexity. So far, no practical optimal bit allocation methods for intra-frame encoding exist, and the commonly used method for intra-frame encoding is the fixed-QP method. We suggest that the QP selection inside an image/a frame can be optimized by aiming at the constant perceptual quality (CPQ). We proposed an iteration-based bit allocation scheme for H.264/AVC intra-frame encoding, in which all the local areas (which is defined by a group of MBs (GOMBs) in this paper) in the frame are encoded to have approximately the same perceptual quality. The SSIM index is used to measure the perceptual quality of the GOMBs. The experimental results show that the encoding performance on intra-frames can be improved greatly by the proposed method compared with the fixed-QP method. Furthermore, we show that the optimization on the intra-frame can bring benefits to the whole sequence encoding, since a better reference frame can improve the encoding of the subsequent frames. The proposed method has acceptable encoding complexity for offline applications.

Existing noise inference algorithms neglected the smooth characteristics of noise data, which results in executing slowly of noise inference. In order to address this problem, we present a noise inference algorithm based on fast context-aware tensor decomposition (F-CATD). F-CATD improves the noise inference algorithm based on context-aware tensor decomposition algorithm. It combines the smoothness constraint with context-aware tensor decomposition to speed up the process of decomposition. Experiments with New York City 311 noise data show that the proposed method accelerates the noise inference. Compared with the existing method, F-CATD reduces 4-5 times in terms of time consumption while keeping the effectiveness of the results.

Multi-modal semantic trajectory prediction has become a new challenge due to the rapid growth of multi-modal semantic trajectories with text message. Traditional RNN trajectory prediction methods have the following problems to process multi-modal semantic trajectory. The distribution of multi-modal trajectory samples shifts gradually with training. It leads to difficult convergency and long training time. Moreover, each modal feature shifts in different directions, which produces multiple distributions of dataset. To solve the above problems, MNERM (Mode Normalization Enhanced Recurrent Model) for multi-modal semantic trajectory is proposed. MNERM embeds multiple modal features together and combines the LSTM network to capture long-term dependency of trajectory. In addition, it designs Mode Normalization mechanism to normalize samples with multiple means and variances, and each distribution normalized falls into the action area of the activation function, so as to improve the prediction efficiency while improving greatly the training speed. Experiments on real dataset show that, compared with SERM, MNERM reduces the sensitivity of learning rate, improves the training speed by 9.120 times, increases HR@1 by 0.03, and reduces the ADE by 120 meters.

Person images captured by surveillance cameras in real scenes often have low resolution (LR), which suffers from severe degradation in recognition performance when matched with pre-stocked high-resolution (HR) images. There are existing methods which typically employ super-resolution (SR) techniques to address the resolution discrepancy problem in person re-identification (re-ID). However, SR techniques are intended to enhance the human eye visual fidelity of images without caring about the recovery of pedestrian identity information. To cope with this challenge, we propose an orthogonal depth feature decomposition network. And we decompose pedestrian features into resolution-related features and identity-related features who are orthogonal to each other, from which we design the identity-preserving loss and resolution-invariant loss to ensure the recovery of pedestrian identity information. When compared with the SOTA method, experiments on the MLR-CUHK03 and MLR-VIPeR datasets demonstrate the superiority of our method.

Maximum margin clustering (MMC) is a newly proposed clustering method that extends the large-margin computation of support vector machine (SVM) to unsupervised learning. Traditionally, MMC is formulated as a nonconvex integer programming problem which makes it difficult to solve. Several methods rely on reformulating and relaxing the nonconvex optimization problem as semidefinite programming (SDP) or second-order cone program (SOCP), which are computationally expensive and have difficulty handling large-scale data sets. In linear cases, by making use of the constrained concave-convex procedure (CCCP) and cutting plane algorithm, several MMC methods take linear time to converge to a local optimum, but in nonlinear cases, time complexity is still high. Since extreme learning machine (ELM) has achieved similar generalization performance at much faster learning speed than traditional SVM and LS-SVM, we propose an extreme maximum margin clustering (EMMC) algorithm based on ELM. It can perform well in nonlinear cases. Moreover, the kernel parameters of EMMC need not be tuned by means of random feature mappings. Experimental results on several real-world data sets show that EMMC performs better than traditional MMC methods, especially in handling large-scale data sets.

In this letter, we study the R-D properties of independent sources based on MSE and SSIM, and compare the bit allocation performance under the MINAVE and MINMAX criteria in video encoding. The results show that MINMAX has similar results in terms of average distortion with MINAVE by using SSIM, which illustrates the consistency between these two criteria in independent perceptual video coding. Further more, MINMAX results in lower quality fluctuation, which shows its advantage for perceptual video coding.

Existing trajectory prediction methods suffer from the “data sparsity” and neglect “time awareness”, which leads to low accuracy. Aiming to the problem, we propose a fast time-aware sparse trajectories prediction with tensor factorization method (TSTP-TF). Firstly, we do trajectory synthesis based on trajectory entropy and put synthesized trajectories into the original trajectory space. It resolves the sparse problem of trajectory data and makes the new trajectory space more reliable. Then, we introduce multidimensional tensor modeling into Markov model to add the time dimension. Tensor factorization is adopted to infer the missing regions transition probabilities to further solve the problem of data sparsity. Due to the scale of the tensor, we design a divide and conquer tensor factorization model to reduce memory consumption and speed up decomposition. Experiments with real dataset show that TSTP-TF improves prediction accuracy generally by as much as 9% and 2% compared to the Baseline algorithm and ESTP-MF algorithm, respectively.

Although Wolf Pack Algorithm (WPA) is a novel optimal algorithm with good performance, there is still room for improvement with respect to its convergence. In order to speed up its convergence and strengthen the search ability, we improve WPA with the Differential Evolution (DE) elite set strategy. The new proposed algorithm is called the WPADEES for short. WPADEES is faster than WPA in convergence, and it has a more feasible adaptability for various optimizations. Six standard benchmark functions are applied to verify the effects of these improvements. Our experiments show that the performance of WPADEES is superior to the standard WPA and other intelligence optimal algorithms, such as GA, DE, PSO, and ABC, in several situations.

Most of the existing algorithms cannot effectively solve the data sparse problem of trajectory prediction. This paper proposes a novel sparse trajectory prediction method based on L-Z entropy estimation. Firstly, the moving region of trajectories is divided into a two-dimensional plane grid graph, and then the original trajectories are mapped to the grid graph so that each trajectory can be represented as a grid sequence. Secondly, an L-Z entropy estimator is used to calculate the entropy value of each grid sequence, and then the trajectory which has a comparatively low entropy value is segmented into several sub-trajectories. The new trajectory space is synthesised by these sub-trajectories based on trajectory entropy. The trajectory synthesis can not only resolve the sparse problem of trajectory data, but also make the new trajectory space more credible. In addition, the trajectory scale is limited in a certain range. Finally, under the new trajectory space, Markov model and Bayesian Inference is applied to trajectory prediction with data sparsity. The experiments based on the taxi trajectory dataset of Microsoft Research Asia show the proposed method can make an effective prediction for the sparse trajectory. Compared with the existing methods, our method needs a smaller trajectory space and provides much wider predicting range, faster predicting speed and better predicting accuracy.

Recently, social relation analysis receives an increasing amount of attention from text to image data. However, social relation analysis from video is an important problem, which is lacking in the current literature. There are still some challenges: 1) it is hard to learn a satisfactory mapping function from low-level pixels to high-level social relation space; 2) how to efficiently select the most relevant information from noisy and unsegmented video. In this paper, we present an Attentive Sequences Recurrent Network model, called ASRN, to deal with the above challenges. First, in order to explore multiple clues, we design a Multiple Feature Attention (MFA) mechanism to fuse multiple visual features (i.e. image, motion, body, and face). Through this manner, we can generate an appropriate mapping function from low-level video pixels to high-level social relation space. Second, we design a sequence recurrent network based on Global and Local Attention (GLA) mechanism. Specially, an attention mechanism is used in GLA to integrate global feature with local sequence feature to select more relevant sequences for the recognition task. Therefore, the GLA module can better deal with noisy and unsegmented video. At last, extensive experiments on the SRIV dataset demonstrate the performance of our ASRN model.

Existing moving object's trajectory prediction algorithms suffer from the data sparsity problem, which affects the accuracy of the trajectory prediction. Aiming to the problem, we present an Entropy-based Sparse Trajectories Prediction method enhanced by Matrix Factorization (ESTP-MF). Firstly, we do trajectory synthesis based on trajectory entropy and put synthesized trajectories into the trajectory space. It can resolve the sparse problem of trajectory data and make the new trajectory space more reliable. Secondly, under the new trajectory space, we introduce matrix factorization into Markov models to improve the sparse trajectory prediction. It uses matrix factorization to infer transition probabilities of the missing regions in terms of corresponding existing elements in the transition probability matrix. It aims to further solve the problem of data sparsity. Experiments with a real trajectory dataset show that ESTP-MF generally improves prediction accuracy by as much as 6% and 4% compared to the SubSyn algorithm and STP-EE algorithm respectively.
