This paper proposes statistical analysis of phase-only correlation functions between two signals with stochastic phase-spectra following bivariate circular probability distributions based on directional statistics. We give general expressions for the expectation and variance of phase-only correlation functions in terms of joint characteristic functions of the bivariate circular probability density function. In particular, if we assume bivariate wrapped distributions for the phase-spectra, we obtain exactly the same results between in case of a bivariate linear distribution and its corresponding bivariate wrapped distribution.

A Feedback Error Learning (FEL) scheme was found to be applicable to joint angle control by Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) in our previous study. However, the FEL-FES controller had a problem in learning of the inverse dynamics model (IDM) in some cases. In this paper, methods of applying the FEL to FES control were examined in controlling 1-DOF movement of the wrist joint stimulating 2 muscles through computer simulation under several control conditions with several subject models. The problems in applying FEL to FES controller were suggested to be in restricting stimulation intensity to positive values between the minimum and the maximum intensities and in the case of very small output values of the IDM. Learning of the IDM was greatly improved by considering the IDM output range with setting the minimum ANN output value in calculating ANN connection weight change.

This paper presents a faster one-dimensional (1-D) phase-only correlation (POC)-based method for estimations of translations, rotation, and scaling in images. The proposed method is to project two-dimensional (2-D) images horizontally and vertically onto 1-D signals, and uses 1-D POCs of the 1-D signals to estimate the translations in images. Combined with a log-polar transform, the proposed method is extended to scaling and rotation estimations. Compared with conventional 2-D and 1-D POC-based methods, the proposed method performs in a lower computational cost. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is capable of estimating large translations, rotation and scaling in images, and its accuracy is comparable to those of the conventional POC-based methods. The experimental results also show that the computational cost of the proposed method is much lower than those of the conventional POC-based methods.

In this study, we aimed to realize a method of presenting dynamic electrocutaneous sensation patterns as a user interface for persons with disabilities. In this study, the previously used pulse width (200 µs) was used in pattern recognition testing on the forearm and was compared with the short pulse width (80 µs) used for stimulation. A cathodic pulse with a frequency of 100 pps, which was suggested to be suitable in our previous study, was used. Experimental results on neurologically intact subjects suggested that the previously used pulse width was suitable and that a short pulse width would not be effective for stabilizing the stimulation amplitude or for improving the pattern recognition ability of our method.

The present paper has reported a case study of the “Electronic Doctor's Bag” which is a telemedical tool for home-visit medical services using the mobile communications environment in an isolated island and a disaster area hit by the tsunami. Clinical trials performed for 20 patients around a clinic in Miyako Island indicated that the communication functions of the proposed system were highly evaluated by patients as well as medical staffs. However, the system still has room for further improvement in operability, portability and mobile communication environment. The experience at the shelter in Kesennuma City suggested that mobile healthcare tools such as the proposed system will be strongly required when there are no or only paramedical staffs after leaving of emergency medical staffs.

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) can be effective in assisting or restoring paralyzed motor functions. The purpose of this study is to examine experimentally the fuzzy controller based on cycle-to-cycle control for FES-induced gait. A basic experimental test was performed on controlling maximum knee extension angle with normal subjects. In most of control trials, the joint angle was controlled well compensating changes in muscle responses to electrical stimulation. The results show that the fuzzy controller would be practical in clinical applications of gait control by FES. An automatic parameter tuning would be required practically for quick responses in reaching the target and in compensating the change in muscle responses without causing oscillating responses.
