A new bipolar scan waveform is proposed to increase the light emission duty factor by achieving the fast address in AC plasma display panel (AC-PDP). The new bipolar scan waveform consists of two-step scan pulse, which can separate the address discharge mode into two different discharge modes: a space charge generation mode and a wall charge accumulation mode. By adopting the new bipolar scan waveform, the light emission duty factor is increased considerably under the single scan ADS driving scheme due to the reduction of address time per single subfield.

A new multi-luminance-level subfield method is proposed to reduce the low gray-level contour of an alternate current plasma display panel (AC-PDP). The minimum or maximum luminance level per sustain-cycle can be altered by simultaneously applying the proper auxiliary short pulses. As a result, the multi-luminance levels per one or two sustain pulse pairs can be expressed by properly adjusting the auxiliary short pulses for the one or two sustain-cycle subfields, thereby suppressing a low gray-level contour of AC-PDP.

In the past decade, significant effort has been made toward increasing the accuracy and robustness of three-dimensional scanning methods. In this paper, we present a new prototype vision system named 3D Model Studio, which has been built to reconstruct a complete 3D model in as less as a few minutes. New schemes for a probe calibration and a 3D data merging (axis consolidation) are employed. We also propose a new semi-automatic contour registration method to generate accurate contour model from 3D data points, along with a contour triangulation based surface reconstruction. Experimental result shows that our system works well for reconstructing a complete 3D surface model of a human body.

This paper presents a method of extracting car license plates captured from the arbitrary directions by using symmetry features. The generalized symmetry transform (GST) produces continuous features of symmetry between two points by combining locality constraint and reflectional symmetry, but its time complexity of GST is increased by the second power of the radius of a searching window. To achieve considerable reduction of this time complexity, we propose a scan line based GST (SLGST) which calculates the symmetry between a pair of edge pixels along the scan lines. Instead of calculating the global symmetry of a license plate, we assign the symmetry contribution acquired from SLGST to the corner point estimated from two edge points and their gradient orientations. The right angle tuned SLGST (RATSLGST) is newly proposed to detect the right angle corners more effectively. Image normalization by image warping is adopted to make such segmentation of license plate and later identification much easier. We also adopt the verifier that evaluates a candidate license plate to enhance extraction rate. Our experiments show that the proposed method for extracting perspectively distorted license plates is fairly reliable.
