  • Active Networks Architecture for VoIP Gateway Using Declarative Language

    This paper proposes an Active Networks architecture for VoIP gateway. In the proposed architecture, instead of procedural language, declarative language is used to describe the up-loaded program. This allows for a reduction in size of the up-loaded program, and increases the flexibility for describing the up-loaded program. VoIP gateway can then provide highly flexible services. An experimental system was implemented for feasibility studies. Specification of the declarative language used for describing the up-loaded program, basic functionalities of an interpreter for the language, and execution control program which executes components programs stored the node beforehand were confirmed.

    A new electron-beam wafer inspection system has been developed. The system has a resolution of 5 nm or better, and is applicable to quarter-micron devices such as 256 Mbit DRAMs. The most remarkable feature of this system is that a specimen stage is built in the objective lens and allows a working distance (WD) of 0. "WD=0"minimizes the effect of lens aberrations, and maximizes the resolving power. Innovative designs to achieve WD=0 are as follows: (1)A large objective lens of 730-mm width 730-mm depth 620-mm height that serves as a specimen chamber, has been developed. (2)A hollow specimen stage made of non-magnetic materials has been developed.It allows the lower pole piece and magnetic coile of the objective lens inside it. (3)Acoustic motors made of non-magnetic materials are em-ployed for use in vacuum.

    Despite the fact that the necessity of FDT (formal description techniques) had been emphasized, many approaches to verifying feature interactions were insufficient. This paper proposes formal definitions for feature interactions which can occur when telecommunication services specified independently are operated in parallel. Seven types of feature interactions are defined formally.

    A requirement specification acquisition method combined with hypothesis-based reasoning and model reasoning is proposed for obtaining service specifications from the ambiguous and/or incomplete requirement specifications of communications services. Errors at an early stage of software development cost more to debug than those at a later stage. Specification acquisition is the most upstream development process. Nevertheless, the system support for specification acquisition is delayed compared with other development phases.' Users do not always have precise requirements. It is therefore inevitable that user requirements contain ambiguities, insufficiencies and even contradictions. Considering this, it is indispensable to support a specification completion method that derives service specifications from such problem requirements. This paper proposes a combined method to obtain consistent and complete specifications from such problem requirements. Communications service specifications can be described by specifying terminal behaviors which can be recognized from outside the communications system(s). Such specifications are described by a rule-based language. Requirement specifications usually have components that are ambiguous, incomplete, or even contradictory. They appear as rule description and/or missing rules. From such requirements, service specifications are obtained by using hypothesis-based reasoning on input requirements and existing service specifications. When existing specifications cannot be used to obtain complementary specifications, a communications service model is used to propose new rules. The proposed methods are implemented as a part of a communications software development system. The system enables non-experts in communications systems to define their own service specifications.

    The security problems of object-oriented database system are investigated and security level assignment constraints and an access control mechanism based on the multilevel access control security policy are proposed. The proposed mechanism uses the Trusted Computing Base. A unique feature of the mechanism is that security levels are assigned not only to data items (objects), but also to methods and methods are not shown to the users whose security level is lower than that of the methods. And we distinguish between the security level of a variable in a class and that in an instance and distinguish between the level of an object when it is taken by itself and it is taken as a variable or an element of another complex object. All of this realizes the policy of multilevel access control.

  • Precise Linewidth Measurement Using a Scanning Electron Probe

    Practical linewidth measurement accuracy better than 0.02 µm 3 sigma that meets the production requirement for devices with sub-half micron features, was achieved in a field emission scanning electron-beam metrology system (Hitachi S-7000). In order to establish high accuracy linewidth measurement, it was found in the study that reduction of electron-beam diameter and precise control of operating conditions are significantly effective. For the purpose of reducing electron-beam diameter, a novel electron optical system was adopted to minimize the chromatic aberration which defines electron-beam profile. As a result the electron beam diameter was reduced from 20 nm to 16 nm. In order to reduce measurement uncertainties associated with actual operating conditions, a field emission electron gun geometry and an objective lens current monitor were investigated. Then the measurement uncertainties due to operating conditions was reduced from 0.016 µm to 0.004 µm.

  • Stepwise Refinement of Communications Service Specifications for Conforming to a Functional Model

    A stepwise refinement method of communications service specifications is proposed to generate communications software that can conform to any network architecture. This method uses a two-layered language; one layer is a service specification description language (STR), and the other layer is a supplementary specification description language for implementing STR description on a communications system (STR/D). STR specifies terminal behaviors that can be recognized from a perspective outside of the communications systems. With STR, a communications service is defined by a set of rules that can be described without detailed knowledge of communications systems or communications network architectures. Each STR rule describes a global state transition of terminals. Supplementary specifications, such as terminal control and network control, are needed to implement communications services specified by STR rules. These supplementary specifications are described by STR/D rules. Communications services, such as UPT (Universal Personal Telecommunication), are standardized so that they can be provided on a given functional model consisting of functional entities. Specifications for each functional entity in a network are obtained from the two kinds of initially described specifications mentioned above. The obtained specifications are described by STR(L) and STR/D(L) rules, which specify local specifications of a functional entity. These specifications for functional entities are then transformed into software specifications, and finally communications software is generated from these software specifications. This stepwise refinement method makes it possible to generate communications software that can conform to any functional model from service specifications.

  • A Requirement Description Approach in Natural Language Based on Communication Service Knowledge

    This paper proposes a requirement description and elicitation approach for communication services. Requirements are described in natural language, refined with a knowledge base, and converted to a formal language for program generation. A model for communication services is made as a set of three items: terminal state, terminal action and the response of the communication system to the action. This set, in turn, corresponds to natural language syntax that expresses two conditions (terminal state and action) and their result. These conditions and result are expressed as a sequence of simple sentences that describe the relationship between a terminal and a communication system. Thus, by defining such a description style to reflect the features of communication services, it should be possible to achieve both a high level of description and mechanical processing capabilities at the same time. However, requirement descriptions usually include omission and inconsistency. This problem cannot be solved by merely introducing natural language for the descriptions. Knowledge about the target domain of requirements is needed to resolve it. This paper reports on a knowledge base that stores constraints existing between conditions and results in communication services. This knowledge base is shown to be effective in supplementing omissions and resolving inconsistency. This paper also presents a technique for converting the elicited requirements in natural language to descriptions in a formal language that can be used to generate a program.

  • An Algorithm for Detecting 3-Way Feature Interactions

    This paper proposes an algorithm for detecting 3-way interactions. As far as the authors know, this is the first proposal ever made for a detection algorithm of 3-way interactions. In this paper, by analyzing examples, the mechanism of 3-way interactions is clarified and a detection algorithm of 3-way interactions is proposed. Namely the proposed detection algorithm is heuristic. To evaluate the algorithm, we implemented a detection system based on the proposed algorithm and applied it to 12 services, and 82 3-way interactions were detected. This shows the proposed algorithm is effective.

  • Reachability Analysis for Specified Processes in a Behavior Description

    Until now, in a communication system which deals with multiple processes, system behavior has been described by a fixed number of processes. The state reachability problem for specified processes was generally deliberated within a pre-defined number of processes, and was analyzed by essentially searching for all possible behaviors. However, in a system whose number of processes is arbitrary, a given state which is not reachable in some situations which consists of a small number of processes might be reachable in another situation which consists of a larger number of processes. This article discusses the above problem, assuming that the behavior of a system is described by an arbitrary number of processes. After discussing the relationship between our model and the Petri net model, we clarify the properties between the set of reachable states and the number of processes involved in the system, and show an algorithm to obtain a sufficient number of processes for resolving the reachability problem.

  • Automatic Elicitation of Knowledge for Detecting Feature Interactions in Telecommunication Services

    This paper proposes a method of automatically eliciting knowledge which is used to detect feature interactions in telecommunication services. With conventional methods, the knowledge is provided manually. With the proposed method, the knowledge is automatically elicited as service constraints. In telecommunication systems, when a new service is added, new state transitions are created. In case of new service, the new state should be reached in the state transitions. On the other hand, some states of existing services should not be reached. These constraints can be considered as knowledge for detecting feature interactions. This paper also proposes a scenario for detecting feature interactions using elicited knowledge. This scenario was confirmed as effective.

  • An Efficient Method for Testing Reachability Using Knowledge in Detecting Non-determinacy Feature Interactions

    Services that operate normally, independently, will behave differently when simultaneously initiated with another service. This behavior is called a feature interaction. A feature interaction, where the next state can not be determined uniquely for one event, is called a non-determinacy feature interaction. To detect the interaction, judgment has to be made as to whether the state, where the non-determinacy occurs, is reachable from the initial state or not. For the judgment, many methods have been proposed. But, still now, it is required huge computation time to judge the reachability. This paper proposes a new method to test the reachability using a little knowledge elicited beforehand. By using the proposed method computation time was reduced drastically. Besides, by applying the proposed method to a benchmark, the proposed method was confirmed to be effective and reasonable.
