  • QoS Guaranteed and Energy Efficient Transmission Scheme for Wireless Personal Area Networks

    In this paper, we propose a QoS guaranteed and energy-efficient transmission scheme for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs), which operate in conjunction with contention-based access protocols such as CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance). Energy consumption is one of the most important issues in WPAN systems, because WPAN devices are often required to operate under limited battery capacity. Furthermore, if the WPAN adopts a contention-based medium access protocol, the energy consumption problem becomes even more critical due to the collisions caused by independent channel access attempts. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an algorithm that selects the optimum fragment size, modulation level, and transmission power, in order to minimize the energy consumption and guarantee the QoS (Quality of Service) requirements, simultaneously. From the simulation results, it is shown that the proposed algorithm can achieve the minimum energy consumption, satisfying throughput and delay requirements.

  • Resource Management for Fixed Relay Based Cellular Systems with Sectorization

    Resource management for infrastructure-based two-hop fixed relay systems which are applicable to TDD-FH-OFDMA based cellular systems with sectorization is proposed in this paper. The severe interference problem caused by both inter-sector and inter-cell can be tackled by employing 6-sector directional antennas combined with the resource allocation. The simulation results demonstrate that at the outer-region of the cell, the high data rate service coverage can be extended.

    Energy-efficient transmission scheme is very essential for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPNs) for maximizing the lifetime of energy-constrained wireless devices and assuring the required QoS in the actual physical transmission at each allocated TDMA time slot. We therefore propose the minimum energy (ME) criterion based adaptive transmission scheme which determines the optimum combination of transmit power, physical data rate and fragment size required to simultaneously minimize the energy consumption and satisfy the required QoS in each assigned time duration. The improved performances offered by the proposed algorithm are demonstrated via computer simulation in terms of throughput and energy consumption.

  • Priority and Negotiation Based Dynamic Spectrum Allocation Scheme for Multiple Radio Access Network Operators

    Most of previous works have presented the dynamic spectrum allocation (DSA) gain achieved by utilizing the time or regional variations in traffic demand between multi-network operators (NOs). In this paper, we introduce the functionalities required for the entities related with the spectrum sharing and allocation and propose a spectrum allocation algorithm while considering the long-term priority between NOs, the priority between multiple class services, and the urgent bandwidth request. To take into account the priorities among the NOs and the priorities of multiple class services, a spectrum sharing metric (SSM) is proposed, while a negotiation procedure is proposed to treat the urgent bandwidth request.

    The time division duplex cellular system can support various downlink and uplink traffic ratios by setting the downlink and uplink transmission periods appropriately. However, it causes severe co-channel interference problem when some cells are active in the downlink while the others are in the uplink [2]. To mitigate this problem, a resource allocation scheme combined with sectorization is proposed for orthogonal frequency division multiple access. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme improves both spectral efficiency and outage performance compared to the conventional allocation schemes.

    In this letter, we propose a symbol repetition technique combined with parallel channel encoding for multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems with ultra wideband channels. It can resolve timing asynchronous cochannel interference from another simultaneously operating piconet. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can effectively reduce the effect of the interference.

    In this letter, we address the problem of how to measure the link quality in terms of signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) in rapidly time varying channels which are due to fast variation of the interference or the bursty nature of the traffic. We propose a new SIR estimation approach for the TD-CDMA system, that is based on a pre-selection tentative decision device which discards and selects the estimated symbol on the basis of MAP ratio. The simulation results show that the proposed SIR estimator works and is superior to other known estimators in rapidly time varying channels.
