A BICM-ID system with 3-dimensional rotated BPSK constellation and signal space diversity (SSD) is proposed to combat the effect of Rayleigh fading. A new criterion based on mutual information is proposed to find the optimal rotation matrix, and the labeling that fits well with the outer code is presented. Simulation results show that at BER of 10-5 over a Rayleigh fading channel, with the code length of 192,000 bits and the iteration number of 100, the performance of the proposed system is only about 0.8 dB from the Gaussian-input Shannon limit and exceeds the limit constrained by the traditional QPSK input without rotation or SSD, at the spectrum efficiency of 1 bit/s/Hz.

There has been an explosion in wireless devices and mobile data traffic, and cellular network alone is unable to support such fast growing demand on data transmission. Therefore, it is reasonable to add another network to the cellular network to augment the capacity. In fact, the dilemma of cellular network is mainly caused by that the same content is repeatedly transmitted in the network, since many people are interested in the same content. A broadcast network, however, could mitigate this problem and save wireless bandwidth by delivering popular content to multiple clients simultaneously. This paper presents a content dissemination system that combines broadcast and cellular networks. Using the model of Markov Decision Process (MDP), we propose an online optimal scheme to maximize the expected number of clients receiving their interested content, which takes clients' interests and queuing length at broadcast and cellular base stations into full consideration. Simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme effectively decreases item drop rate at base stations and enhances the average number of clients who receive their interested content.

A method to construct bit-interleaved coded modulation with iterative demapping and decoding (BICM-ID) is developed that approaches the Shannon limit very closely at high spectrum efficiency, where amplitude-phase shift keying (APSK) constellations are designed and chosen. For 1/2-rate 64APSK, the Es/N0 threshold derived through extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) charts is less than 0.55 dB away from the Shannon limit of the continuous-input additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, and exceeds the theoretical limit constrained by standard 64QAM-input.

The polarization degrees of freedom (DOF) of the hexapolarized multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system over the ground reflected channel is studied in this paper by the deterministic field solution. Using the simple two-ray model, we could get some basic understandings for the influence of a single reflecting surface on the polarization DOF of the multipolarized MIMO system. Computation results show that the number of parallel independent channels in a multipolarized MIMO system depends mainly on the communication range and the height of antennas. In free space transmission, with equal height of transmitter and receiver antennas, large polarization DOF value only occurs in the near field case and it drops sharply to 2 with the increase of transmission range. Whereas for the ground reflect channel, there will be a polarization DOF larger than 4 occurring at longer communication distance with an unequal transmitter and receiver antenna height.

In this paper, a novel consecutive-pilot design is proposed to suppress phase noise (PHN) in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system. The estimation of PHN is performed by a cross-correlation between the received and locally generated pilots in frequency-domain. Simulations show that the proposed scheme can effectively ameliorate the impairment due to PHN, at the cost of acceptable additional transmission bandwidth and low implementation complexity.

Spectrum and Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of a coded π/2 phase shift Non-Square (NS) 8 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) system are studied in this letter. The modulation process of this scheme removes all 180 phase shift between adjacent constellation points and contains inherent memory which can be treated as a type of inner coding in coded system. Simulation results show that this modulation scheme has much lower spectrum regrowth and better BER performance when passing through nonlinear channel compared with conventional mode.

Based on the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm, an iterative time-domain channel estimation approach capable of using a priori information is proposed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems in this letter: it outperforms its noniterative counterpart in terms of estimation accuracy as well as bit error rate (BER) performance. Numerical simulations demonstrate that an SNR gain of 1 dB at BER=10-4 with only one iteration and estimation mean square error (MSE) which nearly coincides with the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) in the low SNR region can be obtained, thanks to the efficient use of a priori information.

A zig-zag Gardner algorithm with parallel architecture is presented in this letter. This algorithm performs timing adjustment in each individual burst independently for high speed wireless burst communication with a short guard. Over sampling data are stored in RAM initially and read forward and backward alternately later. The proposed algorithm has distinct symmetric characteristic in the forward and backward process, which makes the alternate sequences achieve nearly the same effect as a continuous sequence. The performance of the proposed algorithm is very close to the theoretical curve.

In this paper, estimation accuracy of channel frequency response (CFR) according to least squared (LS) criterion with two transmit antennas for the time domain synchronous-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDS-OFDM) system is investigated. To minimize the estimation variance, the conditions to guide the pseudo-noise (PN) sequence design are discussed and three training sequence design schemes are proposed accordingly. Simulations show that the proposed PN sequence design scheme is effective, while the implementation complexity for the channel estimation is low.

The next generation wireless broadcasting systems combining with MIMO technology has drawn much attention recently. Considering the coexistence of receivers equipped with different numbers of antennas in these systems, there exists the special requirement to maximize the transmission rate for receivers having more antennas, while guaranteeing the normal rate for receivers having less antennas. In this letter, superposition coding is proposed to fulfill this requirement and the concept of broadcast cluster is introduced, wherein the optimized power allocation parameters are derived. The BER simulations for multiple services are provided to verify the significant SNR performance gap between receivers with various numbers of receive antennas.

The differential output of an OFDM system can greatly reduce the impact of ISI in the frequency domain and it constructs a convolutional structure, thus the Viterbi decoding algorithm can be used to recover the transmitted information from the output signal. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Software defined radio (SDR) technology has been widely applied for its powerful universality and flexibility in the past decade. To address the issue of bandpass sampling of multiband signals, a novel and efficient method of finding the minimum valid sampling frequency is proposed. Since there are frequency deviations due to the channel effect and hardware instability in actual systems, we also consider the guard-bands between downconverted signal spectra in determining the minimum sampling frequency. In addition, the case that the spectra within the sampled bandwidth are located in inverse placement can be avoided by our proposed method, which will reduce the complexity of the succeeding digital signal process significantly. Simulation results illustrate that the proper minimum sampling frequency can be determined rapidly and accurately.

This letter presents a flexible signal structure supporting localization service for time domain synchronous OFDM (TDS-OFDM) in multi-service transmission applications. Localization is treated as one specific service and the corresponding data is allocated within the physical layer pipe (PLP) of the first subframe. The concept of variable sub-carrier spacing to combat Doppler spread is also introduced for the localization service. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional scheme and at the same time achieves high positioning accuracy.

Time domain synchronous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDS-OFDM) has higher spectral efficiency than the standard cyclic prefix OFDM (CP-OFDM) OFDM by replacing the random CP with the known training sequence (TS), which could be also used for synchronization and channel estimation. However, TDS-OFDM requires suffers from performance loss over fading channels due to the iterative interference cancellation has to be used to remove the mutual interferences between the TS and the useful data. To solve this problem, the novel TS based OFDM transmission scheme, referred to as the unified time-frequency OFDM (UTF-OFDM), is proposed in which the time-domain TS and the frequency-domain pilots are carefully designed to naturally avoid the interference from the TS to the data without any reconstruction. The proposed UTF-OFDM based flexible frame structure supports effective channel estimation and reliable channel equalization, while imposing a significantly lower complexity than the TDS-OFDM system at the cost of a slightly reduced spectral efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed UTF-OFDM substantially outperforms the existing TDS-OFDM, in terms of the system's achievable bit error rate.
