  • Verb Ellipsis Resolution in Japanese Sentence Using Surface Expressions and Examples

    Verb phrases are sometimes omitted in natural language (ellipsis). It is necessary to resolve the verb phrase ellipses in language understanding, machine translation, and dialogue processing. This paper describes a practical way to resolve verb phrase ellipses by using surface expressions and examples. To make heuristic rules for ellipsis resolution we classified verb phrase ellipses by checking whether the referent of a verb phrase ellipsis appears in the surrounding sentences or not. We experimented with the resolution of verb phrase elipses on a novel and obtained a recall rate of 73% and a precision rate of 66% on test sentences. In the case when the referent of a verb phrase ellipsis appeared in the surrounding sentences, the accuracy rate was high. But, in the case when the referent of a verb phrase ellipsis did not appear in the surrounding sentences, the accuracy rate was not so high. Since the analysis of this phenomena is very difficult, it is valuable to propose a way of solving the problem to a certain extent. When the size of corpus becomes larger and the machine performance becomes greater, the method of using corpus will become effective.

    In this letter, we remark a well-known nonlinear filtering technique realize immediate effect to suppress the influence of the additive measurement noise in the input to a set theoretic linear blind deconvolution scheme. Numerical examples show ε-separating nonlinear pre-filtering techniques work suitably to this noisy blind deconvolution problem.

  • Cause of Long Spikes for Cyclotron Harmonic Waves in the Ionograms

    The long spikes have been often recorded at the multiples of the electron cyclotron frequency in the ionograms of the topside sounders observed in low latitudes. There has not been sufficient explanation for the physical cause for occourrence of the long spike so far. Here, by interpreting this phenomenon as receiving the trapped cyclotron harmonic wave, some analyses for the length of spike are done not only from the viewpoint of the sweeping property of the frequency spectrum of the transmitted pulse but also from that of the mutual positional relation between the propagation path and the orbit of the sounder. The cause of forming a single spike and a graphical calculation method for the long spike are proposed, respectively. Thus, the cause and the fine structure of long spike consisting of superposed spikes are clarified.

  • Nonlinear Inverse Filter Using ε -Filter and Its Application to Image Restoration

    A nonlinear inverse filter is proposed for restoring signals degraded by a linear system and additive Gaussian noise. The proposed filter consists of combination of a linear high pass filter and an ε-filter, which is modified from the cascaded linear filter. The nonlinear property of the ε-filter is utilized to suppress pre-enhanced additive random noise and to restore sharp edges. It is demonstrated that the filter can be reduced to a multi-layered neural network model, and the optimal design is described by using the back propagation algorithm. The nonlinear function is approximated by a piecewise linear function, which results in simple and robust training algorithm. An application to image restoration is also presented, illustrating the effectiveness over the linear filter, especially when the amplitude of additive noise is small.

    Epsilon serializability (ESR) was proposed to relax serializability constraints by allowing transactions to execute with a limited amount of inconsistency (ε-spec). Divergence control algorithms, viewed as extensions of concurrency control algorithms, enable read-only transactions to complete if their inconsistencies do not exceed ε-spec. This paper studies the performance of two-phase locking divergence control (2PLDC) and optimistic divergence control (ODC) algorithms. We develop a central part of the ESR transaction processing system that runs with 2PLDC and ODC. We applied a comprehensive centralized database simulation model to measure the performance. Evaluations are conducted with multi-class workloads where on-line update transactions and long-duration queries progress under various ε-spec. Our results demonstrate that significant performance enhancements are achieved with a non-zero tolerable inconsistency. With sufficient ε-spec and limited system resources, both algorithms result in comparable performance. However, with low resource contention, ODC performs significantly better than 2PLDC. Furthermore, in the range of small ε-spec, the queries committed by ODC have more accurate results than those committed by 2PLDC.

  • Performance Improvement of Variable Stepsize NLMS

    Improvement of the convergence characteristics of the NLMS algorithm has received attention in the area of adaptive filtering. A new variable stepsize NLMS method, in which the stepsize is updated optimally by using variances of the measured error signal and the estimated noise, is proposed. The optimal control equation of the stepsize has been derived from a convergence characteristic approximation. A new condition to judge convergence is introduced in this paper to ensure the fastest initial convergence speed by providing precise timing to start estimating noise level. And further, some adaptive smoothing devices have been added into the ADF to overcome the saturation problem of the identification error caused by some random deviations. By the simulation, The initial convergence speed and the identification error in precise identification mode is improved significantly by more precise adjustment of stepsize without increasing in computational cost. The results are the best ever reported performanced. This variable stepsize NLMS-ADF also shows good effectiveness even in severe conditions, such as noisy or fast changing circumstances.

  • Applicability of Specific Rain Attenuation Models at Millimeter Wavelengths

    As a result of examination based on a newly available data set of millimeter-wave rain attenuation measured in the UK, it is found that the ITU-R specific rain attenuation model tends to appreciably underestimate millimeter-wave rain attenuation at frequencies above about 60GHz for the UK rain climate. This tendency is very similar to that previously reported for the Japanese experimental data at frequencies up to 245GHz. Furthermore, an alternative specific rain attenuation model based on the Japanese experimental data is found to be in fairly good agreement with the experimental data in the UK at frequencies up to 137GHz.
