  • Commutation Phenomena and Brush Wear of DC Motor at High Speed Rotation

    Many DC commutator motors are widely used in automobiles. In recent years, as compact and high output DC motors have been developed due to advanced technology, the faster the rotational speed is required and the commutation arc causes a high rate of wear/erosion of brush and commutator. Therefore, it is important how the motor speed influences commutation phenomena such as arc duration, residual current and erosion and wear of commutator and brush in order to achieve high reliability and extensive lifespan. In this paper waveforms of commutation voltage and current are measured at the rotation speed of 1000 to 5000min-1and the relation between rotation speed and arc duration / residual current is obtained. In addition long term tests are carried out at the rotation speed of 1000 to 5000min-1 the change of arc duration and effective commutation period is examined during the test of 20hours. Further, brush wear is evaluated by the difference of brush length between before and after test. Consequently, it can be made clear that as the speed increases, the effective commutation period decreases and the arc duration is almost same at the speed up to 3000min-1 and is around 42µsec.

  • Influence of the Current-Limiting Resistance on the Arc Commutation Process Across the Gap of a Separated Arc Runner

    With measuring the arc current, arc voltage and arc images, the high-current air arc commutation process across the separated electrodes was investigated. It shows that the existence of a short stable arc in the gap may increase the current commutation time. According to the energy balance of the arc column, the conditions to maintain the short stable arc were introduced and the effects of the current limiting resistance on the current commutation process were discussed.

  • A Study on Wear of Brush and Carbon Flat Commutator of DC Motor for Automotive Fuel Pump

    In an automotive fuel pump system, a small DC motor is widely used to drive the pump and driven by a automotive battery. Recently a bio-fuel, usually a mixture of gasoline and ethanol has been used due to shortage of gasoline and environmental aspect. It affects strongly the performances of a DC motor, especially commutation phenomena, what kind of fuel is used. Therefore the authors have started to investigate the influence of ethanol on the commutation phenomena. They have been reporting the wear of brush and carbon flat commutator in gasoline and ethanol so far. In this paper commutation period, arc duration, brush and commutator wear are examined in ethanol 50-gasoline 50%. Brush wears are very small compared with the previous results. Namely in the present test a mechanical sliding wear is predominant rather than erosion by arc due to short arc duration. Further, an area eroded by arc is observed to re-appear as a sliding surface. From these results a threshold arc energy between arc erosion and mechanical sliding wear is obtained, and a wear model is proposed to explain the above wear pattern on the sliding surface.

    DC motors are indispensable to improve the automotive functions. Recently, 70-100 motors are installed on luxury cars and this number is increasing year by year. With the recent demand for improved fuel economy and better equipment layout, the improvement of the motor's efficiency and the minimization of the motor size are the key to enhancing the competitive edge of the products. Adopting the high-density coil is an effective method for that, but it is accompanied by the commutation inductance rise which causes the commutation arc increase. The increase of commutation arc decreases motor life, because it causes the rise of brush/commutator wear. This report describes an arc-reducing effect obtained when capacitors are built into a commutation circuit for the purpose of reducing arcing under high commutation inductance conditions. The results of an evaluation using a equivalent commutation circuit and carbon brush/carbon flat-commutator showed that although a commutation circuit with built-in capacitor generated the same arc energy as a commutation circuit without a capacitor above a certain value of residual current, it displayed an excellent arc-reducing effect below that value of residual current.

  • Characteristics of Flat Commutator on DC Motor for Automotive Fuel Pump

    Automotive fuel pumps are driven by small DC motor. Commutation is carried out in gasoline, and arc voltage and duration are different from that in air. Our laboratory have analyzed commutation phenomenon in gasoline quantitatively and we have considered brush materials. To develop high power motor, we need to examine materials that are less arc abrasion and good sliding condition. In this research, we attend to characteristics of flat carbon commutator. As a result, it is possible to drive longer time, like established cylindrical copper commutator.

    This paper demonstrates the slope isn't an appropriate parameter to characterize a signal regarding conducted electromagnetic disturbances. On the other hand, a relevant criterion is made conspicuous: it defines the maximum slope deviation between two segments forming a signal. This criterion is validated by a signal with a maximum slope of 400 mA/µs.

    A family of single-switch ZVS-CV (Zero-voltage switchingclamped voltage) dc-to-dc converters is presented. This class of converter is realized by employing a commutation inductor circuit which is connected in parallel with either the transistor or the freewheeling diode in a conventional PWM converter. The technique described here is simple and output-voltage control is easy. The converters that comprise this family are derived form Buck, Boost, Buck/Boost, Cuk, Sepic and Zeta PWM converters. The steady-state characteristics of these converters such as the voltage conversion ratio, the ZVS conditions, and the input and output current ripples are analyzed. The analysis is confirmed by experiment.
