  • Time-Domain Eddy Current and Wake Fields Analysis of Pulsed Multipole Magnet Beam Injector in Synchrotron Radiation Ring

    To achieve smooth beam injection in operation of synchrotron radiation facilities, pulsed multipole magnet beam injectors are developed. It is found that the developed beam injector causes serious disturbance in the circulating storage beam in the Aichi synchrotron radiation center, and that such the unexpected disturbance of the storage beam may be caused by eddy current induced on thin titanium coating inside a beam duct. In this work, the induced eddy current on the titanium layer is evaluated quantitatively by numerical simulations and improvement for the developed beam injector is discussed based on the numerical simulation.

    Recently, wireless power transfer has attracted much attention for power supplying on not only small electric devices but also large equipments such as electric and hybrid vehicles. Coils are important components in such power transfer systems and their AC resistance is a key factor to determine the transferring efficiency. The AC resistance of wires used in the coils is required to be as lower as possible for high efficiency systems. Copper clad aluminum (CCA) wire which has an aluminum (Al) core surrounded by a thin copper (Cu) layer has been proposed for this purpose. CCA wires are not only light-weight and easy for soldering but also show lower AC resistance than commonly used Cu wires on certain conditions. In this paper, the AC resistance caused by the skin and proximity effects of a CCA wire with circular cross-section is numerically analyzed. The condition that CCA wires are superior to Cu wires in view of AC resistance is discussed. Simulated results are compared with experiments on fabricated coils and good agreement is obtained. It is actually verified that coils wound by CCA wires have lower AC resistance than those by Cu wires under some circumstances, especially at high frequencies.

  • Calculation and Analysis of Dynamic Characteristics of Multilink Permanent Magnetic Actuator in Vacuum Circuit Breaker

    The dynamic characteristics are the key issues in the optimum design of a permanent magnetic actuator (PMA). A new approach to forecast the dynamic characteristics of the multilink PMA is proposed. By carrying out further developments of ADAMS and ANSOFT, a mathematic calculation model describing the coupling of mechanical movement, electric circuit and magnetic field considering eddy current effect, is constructed. With this model, the dynamic characteristics of the multilink PMA are calculated and compared with the experimental results. Factors that affect the opening time of the multilink PMA are analyzed with the model as well. The method is capable of providing a reference for the design of the PMA.

    An eddy-current type proximity sensor is a non-contact type sensing device to detect the approach of a conductor by increase of equivalent AC resistance of excitation coil due to eddy current loss in the conductor. In this paper, electromagnetic characteristics of the actual proximity sensor are calculated by FEM and the validity of numerical analysis results are studied. Furthermore, two models that has modified magnetic circuit geometry based on the actual sensor are designed and calculated as numerical experiments. Calculated results are shown as enhanced sensing index or electromagnetic characteristics of the modified sensor. In conclusions, knowledge about the magnetic circuit geometry of the sensor is applied for the enhancement of sensing property.

  • Non Destructive Evaluation in Multilayer Structure Using the High Tc SQUID

    The High Tc SQUID was used in an unshielded environment to make eddy current nondestructive testing measurement on a multi-layer aluminum structure. As a demonstration of their capabilities, subsurface defects in a multilayer aluminum structure have been located and mapped using phase shift with no magnetic shielding around the specimen.

    Radiation properties of magnetic noise from the harness wires of a spacecraft (GEOTAIL) have been studied experimentally and theoretically. A simulation experiment on the noise radiation using a minimum set of subsystems of the spacecraft has shown that the intensity and the directional patterns of the noise radiation from the wires were largely changed by the existence of a conductive plate near the harness wires. The change in the noise characteristics is explained by eddy currents induced in the conductive plate by the signal current flowing in the wires. The eddy currents distributed in the conductive plate were calculated by the Finite Element analysis Method (FEM). The magnetic flux densities calculated from both the source signal current and its induced eddy currents for the wiring configuration of the simulation experiment have shown to be consistent with the values obtained in the experiment. The results in the present study have provided us an important information on a wiring method to diminish noise radiation from harness wires.
