  • A Sepic-Type Single-Stage Electronic Ballast for High Line Voltage Applications

    In this paper, a sepic-type single-stage electronic ballast (STSSEB) is proposed, which is derived from the combination of a sepic converter and a half-bridge inverter. The ballast can not only step down input voltage directly but achieve high power factor, reduce voltage stress, improve efficiency and lower cost. Since component stress is reduced significantly, the presented ballast can be applied to high voltage mains. Derivation of the STSSEB is first presented. Then, analysis, design and practical consideration for the STSSEB are discussed. A 347 Vac 60 W prototype has been simulated and implemented. Simulations and experimental results have verified the feasibility of the proposed STSSEB.

  • A New Dimming Algorithm for the Electrodeless Fluorescent Lamps

    In this paper, a new dimming algorithm for the electronic ballast of an electrodeless fluorescent lamp is proposed. The proposed method is based on the burst dimming method that controls the duty ratio for the two switches of the electronic ballast by intermittently modulated pulse signal. This paper presents a fully digital circuit using an erasable programmable logic device (EPLD). To verify the validity of the proposed method, the implemented control circuit was applied to the electronic ballast for a 100 W electrodeless fluorescent lamp. As a result, a dimming method with a wide illumination range from 5 to 100% was obtained.

    This paper investigates the use of chaotic pulsewidth modulation (CPWM) scheme for electronic ballasts to eliminate visible striations (appearance of black and white bands along the lamp tube) in fluorescent lamps. As striations can be eliminated by superimposing a small amount of dc current or low frequency ac current to the electrodes to produce composite current waveform through the lamp, the underlying principle of this work is based on the fact that the power spectral density of the lamp current will be rich of low-frequency harmonics at the output of inverters switching with CPWM. Most importantly, the lamp life will not be affected with chaotic switchings, because the lamp current crest factor is found to be similar to the one with standard pulsewidth modulation (PWM) and the lamp current does not have dc component. The effectiveness of eliminating striations is confirmed experimentally with a T8 36W prototype.
