  • NADH Sensing Using Neutral Red Functionalized Carbon Nanotube/Plasma-Polymerized Film Composite Electrode

    A novel fabrication approach for electrochemical sensing of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) using neutral red (NR) functinalized carbon nanotube/plasma-polymerized film composite electrode is reported. The configuration of sensing electrode was NR-functionalized CNTs sandwiched between two acetonitrile PPFs on sputtered gold thin film. The NR as an electron transfer mediator shuttles the electron from the CNT to gold electrode. Due to the synergistic effect between NR and CNT, the resulting electrode showed the lower detection potential and the larger sensitivity (current) than that of NR or CNT alone. The sensor revealed a sensitivity of 29 µA mM-1 cm-2 at +0.15 V vs. Ag/AgCl, linear dynamic range of 0.08–4.2 mM, a detection limit of 18 µM at S/N=3, and a response time of 7 s.

  • Biofuel Cell Based on a Complex between Glucose Oxidase and a Plasma-Polymerized Film Containing a Redox Site

    This article presents a new design concept of a glucose oxidase (GOD) electrode as an anode for a biofuel cell based on plasma-polymerized thin film (PPF) of dimethylaminomethylferrocene (DMAMF), which plays a role as an electron transfer mediator between the active site of the enzyme and anodic electrode. The configuration of the anode is a multilayer mixture of DMAMF-PPF and GOD, in which a nano-thin DMAMF-PPF containing a redox mediator was plasma-deposited directly onto a GOD-physisorbed electrode. The optimized biofuel cell with bioanode, in a 20 mM phosphate buffer solution of pH 7.4 containing 10 mM glucose, exhibited a maximum power density of 2.7 µW/cm2 at 20. The film deposition was performed using microfabrication-compatible organic plasma, which therefore suggests this fabrication process has significant potential for enabling high throughput production of micro biofuel cells.

  • Electron Transfer Mediated Biosensor with Plasma-Polymerized Film Containing Redox Site

    An electron transfer mediated amperometric enzyme biosensor based on a plasma-polymerized thin film of dimethylaminomethylferrocene (DMAMFc) is reported. A nanoscale thin polymer film containing a redox mediator was plasma-deposited directly onto an electrode with physisorbed glucose oxidase (GOD). Since the redox sites were introduced in the vicinity of the reaction centers of GOD, a highly efficient electron transfer system was formed in which almost all the reaction centers of GOD were connected to redox sites of the polymer matrix. The advantages of this strategy were: no need for prior or further chemical modification of the enzyme molecules, and simplicity of design compared with the use of a conventional polymer matrix. Moreover, the fact that the film deposition was performed using a microfabrication-compatible organic plasma promised great potential for high-throughput production of bioelectronic devices.

  • A Rank-Based Selection Method of Materialized Queries for Efficient Query Evaluation in a Mediator

    This paper proposes an efficient query evaluation scheme for a mediator system intended to integrate heterogeneous computing environment in terms of operating systems, database management systems, and other software. Most of mediator systems transform a global query into a set of sub-queries based on their target remote servers. Each sub-query is evaluated by the query modification method to evaluate a global query. However, it is possible to reduce the evaluation cost of a global query when the results of frequently requested sub-queries are materialized in a mediator. In a mediator, its integrating schema can be incrementally modified and the evaluation frequency of a global query can also be continuously varied. In order to select the optimized set of materialized sub-queries with respect to their current evaluation frequencies, the proposed method applies a decay factor for modeling the recent access behavior of each sub-query. In other words, the latest access of a sub-query gets the highest attention in the selection process of materialized sub-queries. As a result, it is possible to adjust the optimized set of materialized sub-queries adaptively according to the recent changes in the evaluation frequencies of sub-queries. Since finding the optimum solution of this problem is NP-hard, it takes too long to be used in practice when the number of sub-queries is large. Consequently, given the size of mediator storage, the rank-based selection algorithm proposed in this paper finds the set of materialized sub-queries which minimizes the total evaluation cost of global queries in linear search complexity.

    We propose a software architecture for one-stop services of electronic commerce (EC). Users currently have trouble using multiple EC services because they are provided independently. Therefore a mediator that combines EC services and provides one-stop services to users would be useful. Service matching and service collaboration are important issues in the mediator because they are the main difficulties for users. The proposed architecture provides solutions to these issues. Multiple service assignment provides suitable combinations of EC services, flow division enables efficient execution of the combined EC services, and dynamic alternative service assignment enables flexible failure avoidance during the execution of combined services. These features make the proposed architecture a suitable mediator for EC services.

    For advanced data-oriented applications in distributed environments, effective information is frequently obtained by integrating or merging various autonomous information sources. There are many problems: how to search information sources, how to resolve their heterogeneity, how to merge or integrate target sources, how to represent information sources with a common protocol, and how to process queries. We have proposed a new language, QUIK, as an extension of a deductive object-oriented database (DOOD) language, QUIXOTE, and extend typical mediator systems. In this paper, we discuss various features of QUIK: programming capabilities as integrating an exchange model and mediator specifications, merging subsumption relations for maintaining consistency, searching alternative information sources by hypothesis generation, and identifying objects.

  • Multimedia Database Systems for the Contents Mediator

    Multimedia Database Systems as the tool to extract and generate additional values from multimedia 'Contents' are discussed in this paper with putting emphasis on the mediator functions between users and contents. Firstly, we discuss about 'what to do' from the view point of four promising contents sources: 'on the network,' 'in the digital broadcasting' 'in the library' and 'in the real world.' From this view pont, four types of multimedia database systems are defined. 'What to do' for each database system is also discussed. Two concrete multimedia database systems with unique mediator functions, stream-type multimedia database platform GOLS and the intelligent access and authoring system using multiple media synchronization are proposed with experimental evaluation results and concrete multimedia database applications.
