  • Performance Analysis of Profile-Based Location Caching with Fixed Local Anchor for Next-Generation Wireless Networks

    Although a lot of works for location management in wireless networks have been reported in the literature, most of the works have been focused on designing per-user-based strategies. This means that they can achieve the performance enhancement only for a certain class of mobile users with a specific range of CMR (call-to-mobility ratio). However, these per-user-based strategies can actually degrade the performance if a user's CMR changes significantly. Therefore, an efficient uniform location management strategy, which can be commonly applied to all mobile users regardless of their CMR, is proposed and analyzed in this paper. The motivation behind the proposed strategy is to exploit the concepts of the two well-known existing strategies: the location caching strategy and the local anchor strategy. That is, the location caching strategy exploits locality in a user's calling pattern, whereas the local anchor strategy exploits locality in a user's mobility pattern. By exploiting these characteristics of both strategies together with the profile management at the HLR (home location register), the proposed strategy can reduce the frequent access to the HLR, and thus effectively results in significant reduction in terms of the total location management cost. The analytical results also demonstrate that the proposed strategy can be uniformly applied to all mobile users, while always maintaining the performance gain over the IS-41 standard regardless of a user's CMR and the network traffic conditions.

    A high efficient HBT MMIC power amplifier with a new on-chip bias control circuit was proposed for PCS applications. By adjusting the quiescent current in accordance with the output power levels, the average power usage efficiency of the power amplifier is improved by a factor of 1.4. The bias controlled power amplifier, depending on low (high) output power levels, shows 62(103) mA of quiescent current, 16(28) dBm output power with 7.5(35.4)% of power-added efficiency(PAE), -46(-45) dBc of adjacent-channel power ratio (ACPR), and 23.7(26.9) dB of gain

  • A Dynamic Location Update Scheme Based on the Number of Movements and the Movement History for Personal Communications Networks

    It is very important to accurately and effectively track the movement of each mobile terminal in the personal communications networks. Accordingly, various dynamic location update schemes reflecting the mobile terminal's moving pattern are proposed in the literature. Important schemes include time-based, movement-based, distance-based, and direction-based location update schemes. In this paper, we intend to improve the performance of the movement-based location update scheme which is simple to implement and shows good performance. The proposed location update scheme reflects each mobile terminal's movement characteristics and reduces the number of unnecessary location updates. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated and compared with the previously proposed movement-based location update scheme through simulation. The proposed location update scheme requires three memory elements to maintain the movement history in the mobile terminal. The simulation results show that the location management cost is significantly reduced especially for the case with small call-to-mobility ratio by minimizing the unnecessary location updates intrinsic in the movement-based location update scheme.

  • A Carrier Frequency Offset and Timing Offset Detection Scheme for OFDM Systems Utilizing Pilot Sub-Carriers

    A novel carrier frequency offset and timing offset detection scheme for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is proposed. The carrier frequency offset is detected by utilizing a certain a-priori known pattern of power differences along the sub-carrier index. The power difference is caused by the collapse of the orthogonal condition. In order that the power differences are effectively influenced by the frequency offset, time-domain windowing is employed. Timing offset is detected by utilizing average phase rotation according to the sub-carrier index. Moreover, by applying the cyclically mapped sequence as a pilot sequence, the computational complexity for reference signal generation is reduced. Additionally, a simplified burst frame searcher is possible if the sliding correlator is applied as a burst frame searcher. The proposed scheme is advantageous for designing the air-frame format, because the operation for synchronization is done using only one pilot symbol. The simulation results of the offset detection performance are shown, and the validity of the proposed offset detection scheme is presented.

  • Distributed Measurement-Based Quasi-Fixed Frequency Assignment for TDMA Personal Communications Systems

    The distributed measurement-based quasi-fixed frequency assignment (also known as quasi-static adaptive frequency assignment-QSAFA) methodology is a practical solution for frequency assignment in the emerging TDMA personal communications networks (PCN/PCS). Five different QSAFA algorithms are studied in this paper under different interference threshold settings. It is found that a simple aggressive algorithm without using a threshold (LIA-Least Interference Algorithm) performs the best under the conditions studied. The performance of this algorithm is also justified by the theoretical proof presented at the end of this paper.

    Development of a large-scale mobile communications network (IMN: Intelligent Mobile communications Network), as an infrastructure integrating multimedia functions, is indispensable for the support of future mobile communication services aiming toward "personalization," "intelligence," and "multimedia services." This paper discusses the aims of mobile communications and the outline of network technology aspects of PDC (Personal Digital Cellular) network which is currently in service. In addition, the future prospect of mobile communication technologies is discussed with special focuses on the support of universal mobility, network architecture including mobile communications platform, and multimedia technologies in the transport and access systems.
